They’re smoking reality. I recall when people couldn’t believe the AW would start at $499. If I would have needed to guess, $999 would have been on the lower end of my range.
Apparently you're smoking more than reality - the original AW was $350 (and went up to $10k).

It may come as a shock, but some people make a lot of money where dropping $900 for a watch or phone isn’t a big deal for them.

I’ve had dinners that cost more than some people’s mortgages. It’s all relative, my friend. Apple is a premium brand that caters to more affluent customers.
debatable lol, i see tons of broke college kids rocking newest pro max and eating instant ramen noodles.

900 bucks for a regular model watch(non titanium, ceramic, etc) is a huge jump from the current offering. no matter which way you slice it. sure there are always some folks who buys stuff without even looking at the price tag, but that is a small finite demographic, and alot of these folks would rather wear rolex or TH on the daily.

alot of these dinners are business expense on the company's dime. it's a bit of apple vs orange with that example.

I really hope Apple doesn't forget that smaller humans who still want their best watch exist... the 44mm is already ungainly, if they start splitting watch features up by watch size that'd be extremely disappointing
Nobody said anything about splitting up watch features. Plus this is an *additional* RUMORED size - the 41mm and 45mm will still be in the lineup.

Pretty amazing how a Kuo-generated rumor about a bigger, more rugged watch already has details about Apple's anticipated production volume. So a rumor on top of a rumor. Slow news day, I guess.

This article is discussing the rumored "Apple Watch Pro" which will be designed to cater to the folks who are now dropping $1000+ on Garmin Adventure Series and high-end Casio G-Shock watches. It will almost certainly come with a Titanium case and considering the current 45mm Apple Watch Edition Titanium is $849, $999 for a larger Ti watch with more features is not (so) outrageous.

For those who do not need that level of durability and/or feature set, Apple will offer 41mm and 45mm Aluminum Series 8 watches starting at $399/$429.

Let's be honest here, if it came in a circular form, just on that alone, people would gladly pay the price.
I think people who buy AWs aren't so hung up on circular. The reason is simple: most people buy AWs because of its health and information features. You can display way more information on a rectangular display than a round one. In my opinion, a round AW will never happen - because it would require rewrites of nearly every application. Not just the built-in ones. And, if Apple also continued the rectangular ones, developers would have to maintain two versions of all their apps. And for what? To capture the relatively low number of old folks or watch snobs who think 'round is better'?

I work my butt off and have an advanced degree and a good income. I prefer better technology and more advanced products that I can afford. Just because you can only afford cheap crap, please don't call me an idiot. Are you able to go back to school and get a better job with a higher income so you can afford nice things? LMAO
dismissing the idiot remark (I wasn’t the one you are replying too) how is this “better technology”? Based on what I understood it’s just a size bump.

You’re right, it was starting* $350, I mixed it up. However, you can go to the Macrumors article about it and read the comments. People here at very bad at pricing (it’s understandable, since we’re on the other side of the table, but I try not to mix desires with reality).

Yeah but not a “base model”….this doesn’t offer any enhanced specs outside of size.

Latest rumors say it will offer a Titanium case, a larger battery and additional tracking functionality for certain activities (swimming, running, etc.).

And let us not forget the 45mm Apple Watch Edition Titanium is $849 so even if this is a $999 watch, it's not ridiculously more expensive than the Edition editions.

lol $900-$999

I contest the $399 price for the 41mm... as much as I like my S7 I waited for a sale and handed down my S4.

Exactly. A round Watch would have to either have loads of unused screen space at the sides to fit a narrow column of text or have only the middle few lines readable. Not the ideal UX. I’m of the opinion Apple started making a round Watch originally (hence a lot of the circular motifs in the UI) and quickly dumped it when they realised all the compromises needed just to have a circular clock screen.

yeah if it comes with Ti or ceramic, sure, otherwise, 900 for a aluminium just because its big? i would grab my popcorn.

You already have idiots who shell out $900+ for a phone so why not a watch too lmao
Yep I’m an idiot because I spent $1200 on my iPhone. 😂😂😂

This is just a silly rumor. The base model is not going to be more than $500 and I suspect it’s going to be closer to $400. There’s probably going to be a version that is more expensive but you know guess what you don’t have to buy that version.

You can't really compare a phone (which is highly subsidized by carriers) to a watch (which is subsidized much less).
It’s not always subsidized. I think the last time I got any kind of benefit from my carrier was $200 off. What’s worse is they throw that into a payment scheme and give you the $200 in 24 monthly payments. So if you want to upgrade before those 24 months you lose whatever portion you haven’t received yet. I just buy my phone from Apple now. I don’t have to deal with carrier locked BS or any of that crap.

From a durability standpoint, Titanium makes the most sense as it's lighter than Stainless Steel and Apple and their suppliers already have strong experience with the material via the Apple Watch Edition models.

Even a fancy aerospace grade Lithium-Aluminum alloy likely would not work as well as Titanium.

I like how they make it sound like Apple already released that watch and it is not selling well.
