Interestingly, the 8/512 configuration seems to have the longest lead time at the moment....Perhaps a lot of people wanting entry-level systems but worried that the Air has the same 256GB issue as the MacBook Pro?

Any casual user in the MacBook Air market should consider the M1 version first since it's $200 cheaper and wicked powerful compared to past (intel) Air configurations. But if you're someone who is concerned about performance then the M1 Pro or Max is still available to you rather than a standard M2. And nowadays with Cloud storage, a large SSD may not even be necessary for most casual users.

All true but as another commenter alluded, the real problem today is the base RAM. I guess Apple is (literally) banking on the fact that the swap is faster than it used to be.

I really want one of these to replace my 12" macbook. Was still kind of hoping they would have released a smaller laptop, but the form factor of this MBA is fairly decent.

Many consumers are swayed by the packaging and may want the M2 Air due to the new body and visual appearance. The M1 looks dated IMO, and $200 isn't too bad to get newer tech and a sexy new look.

“Sexy new look”?! LOL! 😴

It looks just like the MacBook Pros have looked for years.

The M1 MBA is the one that looks sleek and modern, especially in Space Grey!

The Romans were right:

”De gustibus non est disputandum.” 😎

Looks like the 8/256 model is now into last week July. The 8/512 is mid august

Really tempted to get one for the spouse to replace a 10 yr-old iMac - will wait for reviews to start hitting the web

Would’ve done an impulse buy if it was immediately available for pre order after the event. Now, impulse is gone

If I order the same exact configuration now that I ordered at 5am I could potentially get it one day earlier. 😑

Midnight, 10 core GPU, 1TB, 24GB, 67W charger.

It appears demand is off-the-charts for these new products.

Yeah, seven hours after launch and this hot seller has generated a massive 89 posts (by fewer than 89 people). Buyers around the planet going crazy to get hold of a meh MBA. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️

And you can still go online and order the base model for delivery next Friday. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️

Sheesh. 💩

Midnight, 10 core/ 16 gb/ 512 got it at 05:01 am…august date 😭😭😭
Same. Was in the cart and checking out at 6:01am mountain time and it was already at august 2-9. Is ok, I’ll happily wait for that sexy blue.

Only Apple can do this because they fully control the entire stack

Inexcusable that in 2022 that 16GB versions are all BTO.

So you would be happy if Apple dropped the 8Gb model and doubled the price for the (now) standard 16Gb model?

You have to be. I mean, you don't seem to be worried about price, only about how much RAM the base model has.

Just out of curiosity do we have any numbers how many 8Gb MB and MBAs Apple sells vs +16Gb? Because as much as the enthusiasts always bemoan about it starting with 8Gb, I recon that's plenty for most users and the sales numbers probably also reflect that.

8 GB for a computer that uses unified memory, in 2022, is not enough unless you intend to keep that machine for very short time.

Base+$200 for 16 GB is the price they should be advertising the MBA for.

Most people that bought the 8GB M1 end up having to buy another device with 16GB due to RAM deficiency so Apple is double dipping on sales. That's why they continue to push 8GB.
WTF? Why should people buy a new one? It’s not the 8GB version is unusable.

If you just want it for office tasks, streaming video etc. it’s more than enough.
If you want to professionally edit videos etc. then you wouldn’t buy the 8GB version anyways.

This is „fear mongering“

Some people were tricked into believing that 8gb on M1 is equivalent to 16gb on Intel. They thought that "unified memory" meant that applications will use less ram but it really just means the CPU and GPU sharing the same pool of RAM.
