Interestingly, the 8/512 configuration seems to have the longest lead time at the moment....Perhaps a lot of people wanting entry-level systems but worried that the Air has the same 256GB issue as the MacBook Pro?
When ordering, I wasn't really concerned about the speed of the 256 drive. What came into play for me is that I am getting tired of having to constantly offload data from my current M1 MBA 8/256. Granted this wasn't the case when I bought the M1 but, over time, it has become a nuisance that I would rather avoid with a newer machine.

Congratulations! Wait, how come you didn’t get the mid-night version?
Haha. Good memory!!

It was a last-minute decision. Didn't now until 5-minutes before go time. Last night, I saved both Midnight and Starlight options, equally spec'd, just in case. Back in the day, she owned a black 12" MacBook. That thing was Smudge City - always looked like she was eating a grilled cheese sandwich while using it. This morning, we discussed that aspect and, combined with some hands-on reviews that echoed the same smudge concerns, we opted to go for a fresher, brighter, more optimistic, less smudgy, Starlight. Which I the was a good call for her. We'll see. I'm interested to se it in person.

If I were ordering for myself, I likely would have gone Midnight. 😜

Some people were tricked into believing that 8gb on M1 is equivalent to 16gb on Intel. They thought that "unified memory" meant that applications will use less ram but it really just means the CPU and GPU sharing the same pool of RAM.
Okay, maybe.

But that’s kind of naïve. 1 pound of feathers is a heavy as 1 pound of stones.

But anyway. I think people that decide to get a 8GB machine will know what they are on for.

You must've not been here on M1 launch where fanboys and/or Apple employees were spreading misinformation about 8GB = 16GB. In comparison, looks like most everyone are informed or learned their lesson and getting 16GB or more for M2 launch.

I got the 8GB version 😂 but I only do office work, streaming, listening to music and casual photo editing. I guess I’ll be fine.

8/256 for 1549€ and 8/512 for 1899€, what a rip off.
You have to remember in many countries outside the USA taxes are included in the price. In the USA you get that sticker shock when you go to check out and find out $100 or more was added to your total. That’s just sales tax which is only maybe 8%.

No one was “tricked”. That implies some intentional deceit and I’m not aware of any stores doing this. People watching YouTube videos or looking at posts here and taking whatever the person says as fact was their fault.

8 GB is plenty for many users. If you go into Walmart here in the USA most of the Windows laptops they sell have 4 GB of RAM. I know that shocking to people in the forms because we’re a bunch of tech nerds but normal people aren’t using their laptops the same way. They’re looking for a computer to go play music, pay their bills, go on Facebook, and go to “a certain type of website” that entertains them. That’s it! They’re not doing video editing or running multiple VMs or anything like that.

Yeah, seven hours after launch and this hot seller has generated a massive 89 posts (by fewer than 89 people). Buyers around the planet going crazy to get hold of a meh MBA. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️

And you can still go online and order the base model for delivery next Friday. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♀️
Or, Apple is getting its supply chain in order and is better able to match supply with demand. Apple doesn’t want shortages of any of its products, particularly its higher volume products. The MacBook Air is the best selling Mac. Lots of people buy this for students. They would lose a lot of sales if initial shipment dates slipped to late August or September too quickly, though they will also see a pop in demand in December.

Agree with this - if you need it for higher intensity tasks, wouldn't it be better to go the MBP instead?

I’ll agree that if you’re getting a laptop the best way to do it is buy enough storage to keep your files on the laptop. It might not always be connected to the Internet so having everything in iCloud under optimize storage would be bad. I might regret buying only 512 GB but we’ll see. It worked for my iMac but also I had optimize storage turned on. I might end up keeping that turned on for photos

So you would be happy if Apple dropped the 8Gb model and doubled the price for the (now) standard 16Gb model?

You have to be. I mean, you don't seem to be worried about price, only about how much RAM the base model has.
Apple offers two stock/non-BTO options. The Base 8/256 is fine even though really should be 8/512 now. The step up stock configuration should be 16/512 instead of 8/512 even if would have have been $1599 without the silly 2 gpu upgrade included. There are very few use cases where someone would benefit from 2 extra gpus vs 8GB of additional RAM.

Definitely. Although the M2 CPU is slightly faster the GPU is not going to compete with the Pro. Also there is no cooling fan so if you’re running tasks it take more than 10 minutes to process or so this is probably not the ideal laptop for you. Once you start specing out the Air it becomes almost the price of the Pro.

The MacBook Air is the laptop you buy if you want the most affordable laptop. That would be the base model or something close to that.

It’s also the laptop you buy if you want a little bit of power but really don’t want even something as large as a 14” MacBook Pro. It’s like a pound difference but with some people that makes a difference.

Yes, but this could be a second Mac for some users. For example, if your daily driver is a Mac Studio or 16” MacBook Pro, maybe this is a travel Mac but you want the extra RAM.

I agree they should’ve made that option with 16 GB of RAM instead of the GPU cores. That would’ve been beneficial to more people

I chose to upgrade because my early-2016 MacBook won’t be able to upgrade to the new OS, plus it’s become very problematic. It was the base model back then and it has served me well. So I went with the base again (8/256). The midnight color (!) and $150 BTS gift card sealed the deal.

Don’t be fooled on the dates folks. It’s not demand that’s pushing them back, it’s BTO’s or low online inventory. I can almost guarantee there will be plenty base models in stock at Apple stores and then plenty of threads asking if people should cancel their online order to get one in store will pop up. It’s always like this.

This, totally agree. Two extra GPU cores mean nothing for this type of machine, 16 GB of RAM is far more useful.

Weird. I ordered 8/10/24 GB/1 TB Midnight at 8:03 AM EDT and got a date range of Aug 2-Aug 9. the exact same configuration now is Aug 1-Aug 8. Not sure what that means. Does it mean I get mine earlier too?
