Dieing? ummm it fought off the formatt war with HD-DVD, so yeah its alive and kicking. People said the same thing about DVDs back in the late 90s, they said VHS will stay, ha 5 years later VHS died and DVD came in full swing. Give it time, in a few short years blu-ray will be all the rave...

Online, cable, and satellite content delivery, and new compression formats, will effectively destroy blu-ray as a mainstream distribution method. It will hang around in a niche format for the next five years but in effect it is dead already.

Here is an interesting example of the discussion at a CNet Blog:

In short, physical media are simply too restrictive. Again, those really interested in HD over SD will flock to Blu-Ray, but in comparison to mainstream consumption, this group will be small indeed.

Time will tell.

Does anyone have a large enough Blu-Ray collection right now, I've only seen a handful of them on sale tbh.
Why would you want Blu-Ray in a notebook anyway?

Well to extend it's life span a bit. Not everyone moves on to a new laptop every year.

My iBook has lasted me for 4 years now. I'm in the market for a MBP and i'll in all liklihood keep it for a while. Sure i don't have any blue ray DVDs now, but i know in a year or two i probably will have. I'd like my laptop to be able to handle them

The correct spelling is blu-ray disc. Not Blue ray DVD..

btw.: sry for being meticulous about that...

I am very much in total agreement with you.

Also, with broadband speeds increasing, (100mbps is pretty common in Finland now, we're working on 1gbit) streaming HD is very feasible to mainstream audiences soon.

All Macs ships with screens with much higher resolutions than SD. SD is 640x480, set your desktop to 640x480 and tell me if you can't tell the difference between that and your native res.

HD (1080p on a 900p MBP screen:

SD (480p stretched to 900p):

Look at the definition on the makeup on his forehead, the sharpness of his hair. Download them and view them in full screen and the difference is even more noticeable.

Now imagine the HD image 20% higher resolution and in motion and you have blu rays on new 1080p MBPs.

Until everyone has 100mbps internet and 5tb harddrives, we're not going to be downloading storing our 25gb HD movies on our computers. I can see HD download rentals becoming mainstream but removal storage is not about to disappear. And we're only talking about movies, blu rays can be used to store 50gb of data. Apple caters to the video and movie industry, they need blu ray to move around their large files. Blu ray is coming, it's selling well, it's getting cheaper (already cheaper than DVD was same time in it's cycle), more people are buying HDTVs, more or less all computers have HD screens..

Come on people, come back to reality.

I sure hope all this speculation turns out to be true.

My stupid Dell was recently fried in a thunder storm so I'm in the market for a new computer. Not to mention school is right around the corner! This will be my first Macbook Pro. Heck my first Apple computer. Perfect timing. :D

Thanks for the comparison / contrast. I always wondered what the difference on Blue Ray would look like. To be honest, I don't see what the hype is all about. The images look the same to me. Guess I don't have the discerning eye than others may have. That's all right, it probably means I want be tempted into spending money on Blue Ray for probably several more years.

Don't feel bad. Most people actually can't tell the difference.

Thanks for the comparison. No doubt HD is and will be better on blu-ray. No doubt. But let's not forget the convenience and on-demand factor.

Reality depends on one's perspectives I guess.

And not looking for a fight but 50gig is nothing these days for design, photography and high data usage individuals. I literally discard 50gig drives as charity give-aways these days-- they are not worth my time to burn, format, store, label and use. No thanks.

Not interested in blu-ray at all.

im getting my macbook today. Am getting it for college. Wanted to wait for the update but since its in september thats too late. i go away in 3 weeks so i will just miss it. I am concerned about the screen i get though. I heard lg is the best and im sure the apple employes dont know which is which until you open it right? i would rather have the lg screen and a macbook that was made not too long ago. This is my first apple computer ever

Actually, I think there is a logical reason behind the neglect of a mini. Personally, I do not think it will die. I think it's Steve's plan to put Apple products, iPhones, iPods, into the hands of as many consumers as he can and introduce to them to how great of a company Apple really is. Then when there is no new releases of a MB and a MBP and a MP and iPod expected on the horizon, also after the new iPod has attracted more attention, then Steve will schedule a big event releasing the mini so that those who bought iPhones and iPods who were still PC users would look into this relatively cheap, while still low-end, Mac and consider it. If they buy, they will fall in love with Leopard and from there they will continue to buy Mac computers for the rest of their life. This will cause Apple to steal even more of Microsofts customers away.

If Steve was a man of politics, he'd already have conquered the world.

Steve is seeing how long he can keep the Mini without updating for a bet. He wins if it lasts another 8 months.

Good news and bad news. Good news that new MB's are on the way. The bad news is I have to wait until Sept. I've been waiting since May. I want the new one now! :D

just enjoy the macbook. Everyone who thinks...oo refreshed macbooks are coming..the current macbooks are junk. Wrong. If you buy a macbook now..it is much better than the same macbook that was introduced in 2006, just remember that.

Great

Wow, that's good news for the day. It would be great if they release the MBP before Sept 15. Whenever it happens, I can't wait.

Times like these i wish i was in america...

I'm shattered that the b2s sale isn't available in Aus...most likely because school's been back for a couple of weeks now! :p my B&W iPod kicked the bucket a while back now... and september is far too long for the updated mbp; provided the rumour holds true...i seriously see myself getting one in the next couple of days (fingers crossed for a freak mbp update release tomorrow...)

Apple will not refresh products the day after the ipod promotional ends. It doesnt help their relationships with all of us, the public, nor is it a good business move.

If apple says they want resellers to buy 4 weeks worth of product, that means refresh in about 8 weeks. They would want the channel to dry up almost completely (same as the iphone). It isnt worth having all these old macbooks and ipods and then boom refresh everything. Clear out the channel, people will obviously know updates are coming, and you will have less complaining about how people just bought macbooks and ipods and all of a sudden apple refreshed.

We will start to see more photos of leaked products. I would then peg 5-6 weeks after those surface.

Sept 30 Oct 7. <-- refresh

Hello all, newbie here. I'm going to study graphic design at a university in the US this fall (leaving on the 15th of August actually) and I was hoping to get some input.

The thing is I don't have a Mac and have never had a Mac though I know my way around them because so many people around me have them. You all think I should wait until the release of the new Macbook, right? Should I get the high-end 15" or the 17" do you think? Aren't they mostly the same, except that one is lighter and smaller than the other? Shouldn't I opt for portability rather than a big screeen?
