I find it hard to believe that Steve Jobs will release the iPods, a new MB, MBP, and Mac Mini all at the same time. I have a feeling that we'll see the iPods and a MBP update, and then a silent MB and Mac Mini update about 2 weeks after that. I'm glad that I didn't wait. My new MacBook is my baby. :)

Hardly anyone uses blu-ray. It's a dying technology which was never really alive.

I can't even think of a reason to use blu-ray.

Ummmm? It's not a dying technology.... that's the dumbest statement I've heard about it. I have about 30 Blu-ray movies for my PS3... as long as the PS3 is around Blu-ray won't die.

Anyways, I just want one thing from Apple.... Mac mini update!!!! I want to buy one and so does my Dad, tired of all the viruses (I have to re-install Windows because of a trojan). Anyone know why they haven't updated the Mac mini?

... because they're currently working on it?...
wasn't that an article floating around?...

It's not high priority tho cause notebooks are in higher demand.

Thanks for the comparison / contrast. I always wondered what the difference on Blue Ray would look like. To be honest, I don't see what the hype is all about. The images look the same to me. Guess I don't have the discerning eye than others may have. That's all right, it probably means I want be tempted into spending money on Blue Ray for probably several more years.

I have a 24" 1900x1200 and a cheap blu-ray player.

This difference between DVD and BR is pretty striking if your at an optimal distance from the screen. After watching a BR version for a while if you switch back to DVD it seems blurry.

Probelm is that untill they start releasing a blu-ray version of all new releases it's just a gimmick.

it may take ten years to catch on and by then there may be something markedly better.

DVD took a while to dominate VHS.

But the bottom line is that blu-ray is a pleasurable experience that really should be more widely adopted so that the cost of the players will come down (which of course they will)

The only real downside is that it's only a viable technology if you have a screen that is 1900X1080 which are a present rather large and expensive.

But I imagine that eventually this will be the norm.

Isn't the problem with Bluray players that they consume too much power to be viably implemented into a laptop?

very often you have an outlet close by anyway. even on airplanes you have power. so if you want to watch movies on your laptop then most of the time power is not an issue.

i'm however happy with standard dvd. but i can see other people wanting it so why not make it an option.

I have had my MBP for about a year and I think I have used my optical drive maybe 3 times. I regularly watch movies and play games and such but I find myself using iTunes Rentals and or streaming video more often than not. Its a pain in the ass to worry about carrying disc's around when you can get most content with the click of a mouse from the "Cloud". I agree that non flash based storage is definitely on the way out. I will not miss it.

BR can't be the highest priority for Apple. Obviously even in the forums, its not what the majority of us wants right now. and i don't even think they support BR yet.

Anyone want to take an educated guess as to what specs the MBP will have

Not been following the rumour mill for a while, so i've got no idea what's just round the corner

i'm going back to school in january so i've been planning a new computer the last few months (upgrading from an ibm thinkpad and dont want to deal with a new vista machine). since this revision seems to be more substantial than upgraded processors i can wait it out and still get the free printer since that's good until october. i will miss getting the free ipod touch though, but since i plan to get a blackberry bold or iphone no real loss.

September? Dang to late for me, ah well just have to get a current model.

I'm very interested to see what the updates will bring, so many rumours flying around at the moment. Certainly sounds interesting.

There are plenty of suppositions in the ten other dedicated threads about Montevina MacBook Pros. Search.

Oh, fine... This is the most realistic spec sheet EVER.

2.4, 2.53, 2.8
250GB standard on the base 15", 300 standard on the 17" and mid 15" with the faster 320 and 500 as BTO options
2GB RAM standard, maybe 4GB standard on the 17" with the potential to upgrade to 8GB
NOTHING BETTER than a 9650 GS or an ATI card comparable to that
SuperDrive (NO BLU-RAY YET, PEOPLE)
Maybe... just maybe... the 15" goes to 1680x1050 and the 17" stays with 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 as BTO

Now, for what I'd like to see:
eSATA (because people want it)
FireWire 800 replaced with FireWire 3200 (been a draft standard for a while, but they finally ratified)
Another USB on each model

you are ridiculous, blu-ray sales are taking off big time.

from movies, and the potential to do HD home movies and burning them to Blu-Ray discs to enjoy in your living room. perfect.

Apple currently does not havea good HD solution, they are kinda fumbling it right now.

not necessarily, they don't use too much power, and .... most of the time i am plugged in on my laptop, the more you are just on battery power, the less life your battery will have when you need it, so i try and plug it in, especially when flying.

why

I don't see many people using Blue-Ray. I mean aren't we going CD-free anyway. Its all about digital wireless etc.

Blue-Ray is made by Sony, and you know how much Sony loves Apple.

Ohh but for the classic iPod...i think its gonna be first time we not gonna see major changes. I feel like they name it classic for it to stay forever in that shape and size.

I think Tablet is not coming now though. We always over-predict with so many new products and always get one. Like when we wanted new Macbooks and macbook pros at MacWorld 08. All we got was new Air. =)

I don't wanna read a discussion on the merits of blu ray, I just wanna know when the frikkin macbook pros are gonna be refreshed. Will somebody tell me PLEASE, I am going frikkin crazy here. I gotta get a new notebook before end of August!!

They won't be "frikkin" refreshed for a "frikkin" while. Most likely, you'll need to buy the "frikkin" current model.

I dont know how many of you are waiting on these MBP/MB refreshes to get computer for College, but it is not imperative to have a computer on DAY 1, or even week 1 for that matter. You will be fine w/o a computer for about a month if need be. Most school libraries will loan computers for free to students. Ours (University of Alaska) gives out MBP's for 3 day periods. That is actually how i learned to love Mac's no one ever wanted to check them out b/c they are scared of them. I got them b/c they were always available and ended up buying one due to the awesomeness.

If you are an incoming Freshman, I dont care what your teachers/advisers tell you, you do not need a computer on Minute one.

For a "regular 46" screen - the optimal distance for 1080p is 6 feet.
For your 24" screen the optimal distance is probably around 2 feet.

For 1080p to really catch on, we either need much bigger TVs.
Or much smaller houses.
