Seems fine to me on a DP 1GHZ MDD.

All is well.

I LOVE the mounted servers. Daddy like. ;)

Video drivers and UT 2004: good news

For people who find UT 2004 unplayable and thought video drivers would be a miracle... new drivers may help, but there's a BETTER miracle on the way: Epic found a bug in the demo that cuts frame rates in HALF on single-CPU systems. The shipping product (and an updated demo in the works) fixes that, causing framerates to approximately double for single-CPU folks. I found UT2k4 playable in my PowerBook 1.25 already, but I'm sure I'll be happier now, especially for big levels!

Want to see this speedup now? Find "UT2004.ini," open it in TextEdit, and change both instances of "UseSound=True" to read "UseSound=False". (Other methods of reducing sound will NOT work on this particular bug.)

As you may have guessed, you'll lose sound :) BUT you will see a massive speedup--and with the fix in place, we'll have something close to that speed even WITH sound on.

Even my eMac/700--below reqs--handles UT2004 surprisingly well now (although I'd avoid massive battles). Framerates MORE than doubled.

EDIT: someone else posted the same--and other speed tips--on Page 3 of this thread. Rest assured, though, that the "no sound" fix is temporary: Epic plans a patch for the demo, and the retail game was fixed before shipping.

And thanks to all the guinea pigs out there!

(If Rendezvous file sharing between two Macs really works EVERY time--like Rendezvous already does with iTunes and iChat--I'll be pleasantly astonished!)

just installed it, and now disk utility wont launch at all, it bounces and then crashes, so any disk images i download from safari and such dont even work, this is a bummer, anyone else experiencing this?

That´s exactly what happened to me since 10.3.2? Almost all dmg don´t work.

Anybody has a reason for this?

the weird thing is if i try to use toast to mount the image file instead, toast crashes as well, this jsut doesnt make any sense at all, i deleted disk utility's prefs but its still acting up.

Updated on my 1Ghz 17" PowerBook, eveything seems fine, it feels snappier, FCP, DVDSP, ProTools, Logic... All reporting in and seem to work fine, even garageband loads a bit quicker...

I'm sure something will show up, but right now it's looking good.

*applauds apple*

10.3.3 is great on my 867Mhz 12".... feels a lot snappier.

:)

I don't know if this is a PEBKAC problem or if there's something *really* screwy with my system... but it exists on all three of my Macs:

After updating to 10.3.3, I still can't gain a list of SMB servers to connect to under Finder. If I go to Finder and select "Connect To Server..." and hit the Browse button, I'm just given the Network area of a Finder window.

Now, there's only three empty directories there - Applications, Users, and Library. Never a list of servers or anything.

Any thoughts?

Welcome to the club. Actually since 10.3 i.e. Panther I can't browse my network, Apple's wonder OS has a major issue, it SUCKS for browsing network it was great if not FLAWLESS in 10.2, now this. Checked Apple's techdocs, they even show images and stuff that say you need to know the IP addresses of servers and stuff. Total bogus! :mad:

If you haven't noticed, the Character Palette is in the Finder's Edit menu. That may help those of you looking for the Keyboard Viewer.

Has anyone else noticed that the Mozilla/Firefox/Camino text overflow bug seems to be gone?

Did anyone notice the difference in which permission repairs lists which are not correct? Now instead of simply listing what is off and what the permissions were set at both before and after, it says "We are using special permissions for...." and doesn't list what the permissions are set at anymore.

Believe me, there is a BIG bug in the UT2004 Demo. On Single Processor Macs it runs with maximum the half frame rate, try this:

Open home/library/application support/unreal tournament2004/System/

and edit the UT2004.ini file just with Textedit.

Change:
Channels=6
CacheSizeMegs=32 (your VideoRAMsize)
VARSize= 32 (again)

at OpenGL (not Direct3D ;-):
LevelOfAnisotropy=0

and if you want:
Use16BitTextures=True

These was just small tweaking! Now to work around the bug you MUST turn off audio, to get 2 or 3 times the frame-rate as before (indoor runs very smooth now on my 800Mhz iMacG4, all effects, high resolution, etc.)

THIS IS IMPORTANT (ONLY single-CPU Macs!:
The same file as before:
Open home/library/application support/unreal tournament2004/System/UT2004.ini

UseSound=False

At the Engine.GameEngine!

This is extremely important, turning off the sound works around the bug UT2004 has with single CPU machines. It runs at least twice as fast then. You will see it, now even the menu runs smooth :)
Thanks a lot! I do get twice the framerate and it is now smooth! But is there a way to get sound with it? I have to have a silent smooth deathmatch, or a choppy one with sound! Can't I have it both ways?

yup

I noticed the same thing:

We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util. New permissions are 33261

nothing new

It has done this in the past, nothing new.

Permissions problem if BEFORE Restart, not AFTER

Disk Utility does not want to work on my iBook 700 if BEFORE mandatory RESTART. I think that's all it is.

finally.. sheesh, i was wondering when this was gunna be available.

ahhh - i love downloading large files at work.. it gives me a sence of thanks. I mean, its my works way of saying thanks for all my hard work.

zing! :D

Fan 12" PB, slower apps

Things are slower on my end, 12" PB Rev.A 640 RAM. Applications take longer the launch, and things are sluggish. Fan "feature" is also still here.. Fan runs all day and night, even outside in the cold, cold night. So, the fan running eats up battery power and my nice PB now needs a clean install of Panther and an update to 10.3.1 and then I wait till something better comes along. :mad:

No problem mon!

I love the new improvements! I might be wrong, but I think that the people who still have problems with things (like networking) are suffering from user error. I just don't screw around with things until I read up on them and do things exactly how they are supposed to be done (like networking). I have no problems, and yes, networking is SUPER FAST under 10.3.3. This really made my day! I could make love to Apple right now.

You have both of my problems, Lance?

Thing is, I'm not even using keychain. Manually typing the username and password each time.

Funny, after everyone seemed so happy suddenly we have this mini-flood of negative experiences. Not until after I installed, though!

OK, I figured it out. 10.3.3 mounts the volumes on the "desktop".

Repair AFTER you RESTART, won't work before.

I had the same experience BEFORE a RESTART.
Repair AFTER you RESTART, won't work before.

YES, Disk Utility works fine AFTER a restart.
Cannot find any problems on my iBook 700; everything works smoothly.

Still problems with Windows 2003 Server

Connecting to Windows XP machines via SMB works fine. Unfortunately I still get "The alias <MACHINE> could not be opened, because the original item could not be found" after entering my credentials. So that one isn't fixed yet.

Connecting to the server through AFP:// with the MS UAM installed works fine though.

I just noticed that there is an option for the function keys to perform there default function or custom function. About time Apple address this issue for PB users.

Installed on my PB 667 dvi/60 gig/1 gig ram

seems a bit slower, or maybe the same. definitely not quicker.

No problems - trying networking.......works fine, appears in sidebar and on desktop then disconnects when I drag it to the trash.

Havent tried Mail yet - dont know if I have the nerve.

So what was the behavior you were seeing before? You didn't get the error messages I was getting then, I take it.

Guess this leaves me as the only one with this problem. If it's not a major bug, it's either a minor bug or a bad error message. OS X created that alias (and presumably re-creates it each time I reboot or throw the alias in the trash), if it can't find the original that shouldn't be my problem.

Unless I'm missing something. That's always possible.
