no problems here. Mail certainly seems way snappier.. and the SMB mounts are awesome! .. I couldn't ask for anything more. Disk Utility works fine for me.

So what was the behavior you were seeing before? You didn't get the error messages I was getting then, I take it.

Guess this leaves me as the only one with this problem. If it's not a major bug, it's either a minor bug or a bad error message. OS X created that alias (and presumably re-creates it each time I reboot or throw the alias in the trash), if it can't find the original that shouldn't be my problem.

Unless I'm missing something. That's always possible.

I saw the same errors as you because I didn't realize that the volumes were mounted on the desktop and I clicked connect multiple times. I got the error when attempting to connect to already connected volumes.

I still can't figure out how to install 10.3.3 completely. I've tried repairing permissions and optimizing prebindings, with no luck. (I didn't actually think it would work, but it couldn't hurt).

Interesting. At the very least, this isn't a very helpful error message. It almost sounds like an all-purpose networking error message -- anything goes wrong, 10.3.3 tells you "the original item cannot be found."

Anyway, nothing on my desktop. I get the error message from the very first time I attempt to connect.

I guess this isn't the proper place to ask for help (I am posting this on the Apple forums), but I'd be interested to hear if at least one other person has this problem, just so I don't feel so stupid.

After updating to 10.3.3, I still can't gain a list of SMB servers to connect to under Finder. If I go to Finder and select "Connect To Server..." and hit the Browse button, I'm just given the Network area of a Finder window.

What options do you have turned on in /Applications/Utilities/Directory Services.app?

Do you have the firewall enabled?

I just noticed that there is an option for the function keys to perform there default function or custom function. About time Apple address this issue for PB users.

Thank God! Thank Apple!

But, most importantly, thank YOU for telling ME! :)

I asked for this (via feedback) and I got it. :)

Now I'm just *waiting* for a two button + scrollwheel bluetooth mouse. :)

Very Nice Update...

Update worked like a champ. New Networking functionality is nice and even noticed my wireless network gets a little better range... anybody else see a wireless improvement??? :D

I don't know if this is a PEBKAC problem or if there's something *really* screwy with my system... but it exists on all three of my Macs:

After updating to 10.3.3, I still can't gain a list of SMB servers to connect to under Finder. If I go to Finder and select "Connect To Server..." and hit the Browse button, I'm just given the Network area of a Finder window.

Now, there's only three empty directories there - Applications, Users, and Library. Never a list of servers or anything.
That's very interesting. You're seeing the 10.0-10.2 incarnation of the Network icon, which is totally different than in 10.3.

Here's something to try: Go to the Finder preferences, the Sidebar section. Uncheck Network. Maybe log out and back in at this point for good measure. Then check Network again, and see what your Network icon does now. If there are no other servers on the network, at least under 10.3.2 (haven't finished downloading 10.3.3 yet), you'll just get a Servers folder/alias/icon thing. If there are, you'll see a list of them (I think; I've never used Panther with servers outside my home network). That's what Apple now calls network browsing, and that's why clicking Browse in Connect to Server always dumps you back to the Network icon.

Every so often one sees a large number of negative reviews and sometimes they make sense... but now? Could someone explain these... I'm intrigued.

The only reasonable explanation is that there are so many *******s on this world my friend.

Not really. It's been doing the same time here as well. I've found it does it with Windows Computers that are listed on the network, but don't have a folder shared. Of course it'd be nice if you could cancel this like if you manually entered the address from the Cmd+K. Also SMB shares that give you the -50 with the Cmd+K seem to freeze finder while browsing. I'll feedback APPLE.

Also realized that people on campuses might have firewalls on, which might cause Browsing and connecting to hangup (OSX is looking for the share, but never timeouts. With Connect To... you have access to a Cancel button)

SMB Mounts are nice, but what about browsing networks?

I guess the SMB mounts are cool and all, but I'm suprised to not see more complaints about browsing the network. With all prior releases of Panther, I could browse my network seemlessly, without having to constantly bring up the SMB Mount dialog. I could just double-click on one of the servers under "Network" to connect to it and all of the shares showed up as folders that I could quickly and freely browse.

With 10.3.3, if I want to browse the shares on one of my WinXP machines, I have to click on the Server and "Select a share" with the SMB Mount dialog. Then I can go to the sidebar, select that SMB Mount, and browse it. I have to do this for every share I want to browse on the server! Is this not what everybody else is experiencing? This seems like 1 step forward and 2 steps back to me. I'm right back where I was in 10.2.x (but with a nicer finder). I'd gladly give up the "Mount" in the sidebar and/or desktop to be able to easily browse my shares again.

You probably have "download important updates in the background" selected in Software Update.
When you actually triggered the update/install, SU continued its download in progress.

new G5 support in 10.3.3

PowerMac7,3 must be new G5.
Current G5 is PowerMac7,2.

from AppleMacRISC4PE.kext's info.plist:
<key>PowerMac7,2</key>
<string>PowerMac7_2_PlatformPlugin</string>
<key>PowerMac7,3</key>
<string>PowerMac7_2_PlatformPlugin</string>
<key>RackMac3,1</key>
<string>RackMac3_1_PlatformPlugin</string>

Re: Network only showing "Applications", "Library", etc

If when you click on Network you are only seeing the folders "Applications",
"Library", etc try dragging these folders to the trash.. that usually fixes the problem.

The problem is that you've ended up with some local folders in your Network automount directory. Then instead of seeing the auto discovered network aliases, you just see those local directories.

Not sure what causes those dirs to get there, but trashing em will set things back to normal.

Finder is gone

Well, I must be the only on having trouble with this update. Now, when my machine starts up it asks me for the name and password of a 'file server' on the network. BUT all I get is a spinning beachball. It is another computer on my LAN. I've done all the obvious (permissions, delete pref files) reinstall the update but nothing is working. Any ideas?

For my two cents; if you have work to do, don't install this update until next week.

Anybody have any luck getting to a Server or a Shared folder on a ( Windows ) server thru a VPN connection.
My VPN Connection is working, but, I used to be able to see servers and Shared folders thru this connection in Jaguar, not in Panther.
Any Ideas?

Anyway, 10.3.2 slowed down my system a bit when I installed it, but now with 10.3.3, it's running faster than ever.

New drivers, but doesn't help playability of UT2k4 on a powerbook 1ghz 12", it is still unplayable.. ohh well.. Powerbooks aren't gaming machines anyways..

That's a shame to hear. I was hoping the nVidia drivers would be improved and we might see a decent increase in 12" PowerBook 3D game frame rates. That's my only real complaint with the 1GHz 12" PowerBook...poor 3D performance with popular games. I know everyone says "PowerBooks aren't gaming machines", but there's no real reason for that...it just seems like an excuse to cover up their generally low performance on 3D games. They're good all-round systems...and that should include games.

Hopefully with the revision C 12" PB (if there even is a revision C) Apple will put something a little more powerful than the nVidia GeForce FX 5200 in there...maybe the ATI Radeon 9600 Mobility and the 15" and 17" will get upgraded to the newly release Radeon 9700 Mobility. Here's hoping...
