x.x.4 is amazing. It cured my 5 whitespots I just called in to get fixed this afternoon! No snappier-ness, but no problems. Finder searches _seem_ less laggy.

no Airport fix...

So, I've still got the new problem from a few weeks back with the Airport disconnecting when waking from sleep. I keep seeing references to this on Apples support boards, etc. with strange links to this problem and machines with over 1GB RAM - (17" 1.5Ghz 1.5GB)

Well, I'd love for that one to get fixed before long - this update is nice otherwise!

I'm not on 10.3.4 yet, cuz my PB's @ school, but I beg to differ after looking at your photos. The pinstripes look more prominent and the blue and metal have something different about them. Can't quite name it yet though.

I don't know how they can be more prominent when they're identical :)

Graphic Converter's Compare Pictures function is nice. The blue menus give the same yellow hue in the comparison, so they are the same. The brushed metal is the same, though seen with some light gray in the comparison: the GIF compressed images that were sent dithered slightly differently. In fact, the lettering and images for snap back differ more than the brushed metal. See attached image (black = perfectly the same, white = perfectly different)

Quicktime is the only app whose version number is the same.

is there something wrong in my installation, because the finder (about) shows version 10.3.1 and not the 10.3.4 that can be seen in "about this mac".

*grumble* this update is crap. How many times does a person need to submit a critical bug to Apple before it actually gets fixed.

Scenario:
Reply to a received email.
Click on little arrow - note that it pops up your reply.
Move the received email to another folder (as many people do to organize their mail).
Click on little arrow - pull out your hair as ridiculous message pops up saying the reply can't be found.
Critical? What part of that bug is critical? Or perhaps your definition of critical is significantly different than mine?

I have participated in discussions about this and other people have also submitted the bug, as far back as the beginning of the year, with no results.
Do you have a Radar bug number to track?

Also, you do realize that software updates are not intended to fix all bugs? There's a very rigorous process within Apple to determine what makes it into a software update.

Personally, I'm fine with the software updates being truly critical bugs, regressions (regression are treated as very serious issues by Apple) and blocking bugs that hamper use of certain technologies or applications.

Bugs that are cosmetic in nature or not-so-critical rarely make it into software updates. That wouldn't be bad except that the only way then to get fixes for these minor bugs is to pay to upgrade to the next major release each time. I'd like to see Apple offer deep discounts to people for the next release after the one they purchase. So, everyone that purchase Panther can get Tiger for $39. Anyone that pays full price for Tiger can get 10.5 for $39 and so on.

No. I'm still on 10.3.3, but on Finder version 10.3. The Finder versions don't match up to the OS version number.

i think that's stupid. i mean, well, they don't have to change the finder with every release but when they do, there's nothing to lose by naming the finer according to the os release number - so going from 10.3 to 10.3.4 wouldn't hur anyone but would tell instantly when the finder was last updated.

is it just me? i think that there shouldn't be a 10.3.1 finder in a 10.3.4 os release. the numbers should match, because, after all the finder is a core part of the macintosh gui.

installpalooza

hehe.. i just had nice time installing the update and correcting permissions on 10 computers :) i love these mornings. dunno why, maybe i'm just such a nerd who enjoys small things.

I'm a fan of it..

I'm very happy with this update!
If i wake up my 15" PB from sleep, it reconnects to the WLAN AP (non-apple) in seconds- no way before. Maybe I've bought not enough RAM to have the error anymore ;-)

If I change my location (working a lot with this feature..) it takes nearly no time to enable/disable WLAN etc.. up to a minute before.
And, Safari feels really better now.

I know the team knows the bug (I notified them of it days after Panther was released). They need to make some changes to the mbox file format first, which will take some time and testing.

There are other more urgent bugs that the Mail team needs to address though.

The pinstriping seems a little more prominent, as it was virtually unnoticable before. I don't notice any change in colors though.. Seems the same as it was before.

Anyone care to compare color values?
Two colors each (due to striping)

RGB - 48,100,178 and 49,100,179
HEX - 3064B2 and 3164B3
CMYK - 78,49,7,0 and 77,48,7,0

Those are the values I see now, can anyone get the values for the previous version?

hhmmm.... interesting.

well i'm still on 10.3.3, so i did a quick check of the pinstriping colours.

the lighter colour in the striping (RGB values): 244, 244, 244
the darker colour in the stripes (RGB): 238, 238, 238

ssooo... that's quite a big difference to what you say they are in 10.3.4. i'm hoping this can't be right, because i like them really subtle, well, not that i'm ever using the default Aqua theme very much. ;) also, here's some pictures of the difference in colour that i'm talking about. is this the part of the UI that you're refering to?

Seems to have screwed up HALO

I know this is not the end of the world, but the 10.3.4 upgrade has brought HALO to a crawl on my 1.25ghz iMac. Under 10.3.3 it ran fine in single and multiplayer mode. I can only assume this is due to the video driver update and hope a new patch from Macsoft/Bungie will fix it, but I thought I would share if there is someone out there who will "JUST DIE DAMMIT!" if they can't play HALO anymore. :)

I never understood the fascination with uptime. Who cares how long a machine has been up?

Well, with me it's due to trauma sustained from working with Windows for too long. The though of my windows uptime .....

Now, or just a few minutes ago:

9:15AM up 49 days, 7:48, 1 user, load averages: 0.58, 0.25, 0,10

yeah, bragging right play a part as well.

Dowloaded the update in 16 seconds flat! Damn that was fast.

So far I can only pick up that Safari runs much quicker! :D :D

Ya, you never know with updates these days. I think I will wait a bit before installing to here more reports from other users.

has there every been a really bad os x update?

(i have oinly had trouble with 10.2.3 on my cube it kp'd before i got to log in)

and what's up with people posting the percentage of optimization completed? WTH do i want to know that? and we dont' really care what you've named you Panther boot volume either...

as for uptime, i dont' mind seeing that... as long as it's a decent time.

iHack, that's a fairly decent uptime, is that on a work machine, or just one that you surf the net on at home. i can hardly ever get a good uptime on my PB, seems to always need a restart for some reason.

CD/DVD??

I just installed 10.3.4 without any problems, except for one. The icon for CD and DVD in System Preferences has disappeared. It still says CD and DVD (or whatever it is in English, I have the language set to Japanese), but the space above it is blank. I've checked permissions, but still nothing.

Anyone else have this problem?

Ditto repair permissions. This update has solved a niggle whereby launching System Preferences would make the whole system stutter for a second. Now it feels wierd to launch it and be able to move the mouse to the appropriate icon straightaway!

Well...

10.2.8 was notoriously bad...

and 10.3.0 really played havoc with the preferances of those who started using Filevault...

Apart from this the updates has been harmless, but I think those two is lurking in the back of a couple of minds... ;)

Where I am it is currently 3:30 a.m. and I'm ready for sleep, time to let the download start now, should be done when I wake up (maybe). Diial-up is so . . . odd?
