No problems with this one at all - my 1.25 GHz G4 17" iMac is running better than ever!

Apart from the usual niggles with a software update, most people seem to find that their Macs run faster afterwards. Is this attributed to the actual update or just to the fact that we had to restart our computers. Heaps of the members here claim to hardly ever restart their computers. Is that just a Mac thing because I'm a pretty recent switcher an I know that if I didn't restart my computer for more than a week it would have massive slowdown.

Is the speed-up after an update just a result of the restart? If not, does this mean I don't have to do the weekly restart of my iBook each week cos that'd be really cool.

Just as a side note - why didn't anyone tell me about macs earlier? I swear I find a new feature I love about OSX every day!

Has anyone else experienced horrible icon bouncing when trying to get into Safari? If there is no other program open, it usually opens in 5 bounces, but if there are two or more programs open, it can take 10-15 bounces. Certainly not normal, and certainly caused by 10.3.8, as it opened with one bounce before installation. FYI- I ran complete OnyX system maintenance shortly after installing. Grrr...

Hmmmmm..... And the lesson here is.... dont use Safari.....
Use firefox instead....
Hehe

Issue regarding PowerBook waking from sleep with a black screen and not respond to any keyboard, mouse, or trackpad input has been thankfully solved by 10.3.8. I thought my system was going crazy, talk about a pain in the arse. Everytime my system went to sleep I would get this black screen and then nothing. I had to reboot everytime it happened.

A quick fix (although not a proper solution) is to not quit Safari when you're not using it. I keep it running 24/7 and don't have any problems.

Snappy boot is not what happened to me when I rebooted. Took nearly three times as long as under X.3.7.

My system? A 17" PB running at 1.33 ghz.
A slower than usual reboot immediately after an upgrade is normal. Subsequent reboots should be noticeably shorter.

Never heard of this one. No major difference in battery life for me with the last couple of updates.

My battery life used to be 5:30 and it dropped to 5:00 after the last update.
12" PowerBook.... Rev. C....

Is this update supposed to fix PCI quartz extreme?

YES! I've downloaded and installed 10.3.8 (from the combo updater - I as previously on 10.3.6), reinstalled PCI Extreme 2.1 and it's now working very nicely on my B&W G3 400mhz w/Flashed 64mb PCI Radeon 7000.

Yep, just updated to 10.3.8 and my fans spin wildly every so often. Much faster than I've ever had them go before. This is definitely an effect from the update.

Every previous update has never caused an issue before. This is my first problem with an update but it is DEFINITELY there.

Because you didn't look hard enough? I dunno.... in the end, its all your fault. :p

(Quiet chuckle...) Fair enough. I suppose what I was trying to say is that Apple don't highlight the 'little' features of their OS well enough in their advertising. They seem to focus on the whole compatability thing which is also good but apart from Expose, they really don't tell everyone about how easy OSX is day-to-day.

Anyway, that's a little off the topic. As for 10.3.8, my iBook's fine. The connections to Windows PCs is a little easier now. She seems to notice XP on my network much quicker now which is good because it was previously a bit slow.

I guess it's more of an "all OSs except Windows" thing. :) I never restart unless there is an OS update ... Come to think of it, I don't restart my Windows computer at work either, and it still doesn't seem to slow down very much.

WindowServer Crash in 10.3.8

Hi All,

I had problems with the ATI drivers in 10.3.6 it was fixed in 10.3.7 but is now back!

I seems only to be a problem with the early dual 2GHz G5's

The screen freeze, mouse moves, but all you can do is to reboot.
Back to 10.3.7 until they fix this!

  • Improves the performance of Blizzard World of Warcraft's "Full Screen Glow" video feature.
  • Addresses an issue in which a PowerBook G4 computer would, on rare occasion, wake from sleep with a black screen and not respond to any keyboard, mouse, or trackpad input.

What can I say, but "WOOT WOOT !!!" ?

Reduced Framerates

All seemingly went well on my 1ghz powerbook. Mail and Safari start quickly now. Have not tested for the sleep problems yet.

The only thing I noticed is that marine aquarium 2.0 framerates dropped from ~125 to about 65-70. The fish seem somewhat unhappy. I do not have anyother open GL benchmarks.

cocktail - delta upgrade - cocktail

Sad to report, 10.3.8 still exhibits the volume problem for me. Does anyone else have anything to report on this? (Yet again using 10.3.5's Apple02Audio.kext, version 2.2.6, instead of 10.3.8's 2.5.0).
Damn, that is the only thing that really bugs me at the moment and it's still not fixed. :(

(Apart from my MDD not sleeping properly when you put a PCI card in it - but then again I'm not expecting that to EVER be fixed)

Hmmm... it seems to have introduced this issue on my PM G5. I have never had any unusual fan behavior for a long time (since 10.2.x).
But now with 10.3.8 it will suddenly rev up very high with no apparent provacation for about 10-20s and then fall down again.

I have the original 2003 dual 2.0 model.

Yes, I have the same system as you. I can verify mine is doing the same thing.
