Well, I just updated to 10.3.8 and it took 8 minutes from download to reboot on my Dual G5 1.8Ghz & DSL modem. Since many people don't have DSL or a G5, I'm assuming it'll take at least 12 minutes average. That means 114.2 years!!! OK. I've had it!

Oh be quiet, Lacero.

No one is putting a gun to your head and ordering you to hit Install in software update.

Besides, you could count yourself as wasting more time by posting here complaining about wasted time, whatever that means.

Weird, after the update, my PM G5 fans from time to time get really loud for a couple seconds and then go back to normal.

Anyone else with this issue?

Cheers.

I have the same experience and I do think it is from this update. This has never happened in a year of updates.

I don't do regular maintenance, so maybe that would help. I use TechTool Pro 4 2-3 times a month to check for problems and sometimes defrag. I've used Cocktail and Onyx to do some maintenance procedures, but again not on a regular basis, just whenever I think of it and have time. I'll check out Maintain and see what that's like.
:)

OS X Panther has built-in defragging. It happens on-the-fly, so you should never need to do it manually. I've found Onxy to be pretty good, even if the interface is rather creative.

Killed airport express.

Maybe just coincidence but after installing 10.3.8 I had to reset airport express to get any signal. Would not even work with other Powerbook.. What the??

Not sure if this is happening to anyone else, but ever since the update, the screen on my PowerBook has been flipping out on me. It will dim and brighten again to normal every so many seconds even though the light level in my room hasn't changed at all. It seems like the sensors are a lot more sensitive or something. I have the first rev 15" Aluminum PowerBook G4 (1.25 GHz). Anyone else notice this issue?

Safari 1.2.4

Safari's speed is MUCH improved in 10.3.8 for me. I was having major issues in 10.3.7 when using tabbed browsing-- I was visited by the spinning beach-ball of death wayyy too many times..

FAN GOING NUTS

Ever since I updated, the fan in my DP 2ghz G5 is going nuts. Constantly ramping up and down in speed every few minutes. Sometimes it sounds like a freaking hair dryer. I'm very tempted to roll back to 10.3.7. Anyone know what is going on?

Well I kernel panic-ed in the middle of the update but no damage so far. About this Mac says I'm running 10.3.8. Boot up seemed slow however. Everything else is fine as of now.

Enhancements, according to Apple:
  • Resolves an issue in which a "flicker" could be seen when navigating DVD menus in DVD Player on certain PowerBook G4 computers.
  • Addresses an issue in which a PowerBook G4 computer would, on rare occasion, wake from sleep with a black screen and not respond to any keyboard, mouse, or trackpad input.
  • Addresses "jumping cursor" issues that might occur when using your portable computer's trackpad with your thumb, side of thumb, or a "flat" finger.

A few times my PB would wake up with a black screen and I had to hold the power button a few seconds to shut it off and turn it back on.

Have not, in my memory, had a flickering when navigating DVD menus but I have seen the screen flicker when I was doing mundane tasks. I know other threads have discussed this issue and I am in no hurry to get it checked out.

And the "jumping cursor" issue possibly has not happened to me, if I remember correctly.

I will have to wait until the weekend to download the update. Not enough time during school and evenings.

Here's hoping nothing goes wrong with my update.

Safari issues

Just updated.

Only problem seems to be in Safari. For some reason, when loading decent sized images (ie: more than icons or smilies), sometimes it decides to quit halfway through and stretch the image to fill the space of what the full iamge should (similar to what happens when you hit stop during some image loads, except this is without pressing stop).

Is that a problem? You shouldn't need to reboot often, only for updates like this one. When I had an iBook, I shut it down twice in one year :D (not counting reboots)

It's not too big of a problem. I got worried however when I got the gray Apple screen for about 15 minutes. Hopefully that was some sort of failsafe in the installer in case of a kernel panic during installation.

Looks like the 10.3.8 update is going to be a winner as my fans have really quieted down. They used to rev a bit when scrolling in Safari or iMovie, but they don't anymore... :D

Everything else seems to be great. It didn't however get rid of my PSU squeak. Not sure if taking it to Apple is going to do any good for that issue...

that used to happen to me all the time. it started after my powerbook fell off my bed and literally did a backflip when it hit the ground so i figured that it was my fault.

i've updated and everything is going well excpet my typing is a big laggy when it wasn't before. hmm...

Yes!!! I had all of these issues. Brilliant!

I am sick of all these OSX updates and security fixes. Considering it takes at least 3 minutes to install and reboot from these updates, multiply that by at least 5 million OSX 10.3 users and we have collectively wasted 15 million minutes, or 28.5 years!

Screw Apple. Can't they release a new dot release that carries throughout it's entire shelf life? Such massive wastes of everybody's time doesn't bode well for a company with an already 1.8% market share.

I usually don't see trolls on this site. I'm assuming this was a tounge-in-cheek bit of clever sarcasm (the time calculation is very Jobsian). If not, you're an idiot.

Size Wrong

The size reported in this article is wrong. The version of OS X 10.3.8 that I downloaded via software update was 16.4 megs, not 27+.
