G5 problems with 10.3.8 ! ! ! !

Weird, after the update, my PM G5 fans from time to time get really loud for a couple seconds and then go back to normal.

Anyone else with this issue?

Cheers.

same here. every few mins the fans spin up and go down. with after effects and unreal tournament much worse. fans go up like mad for about 10-15 secs, than cool down.

i have a progi named "temperature monitor" and i´ve been watching the temps - both processors go up to something like 43,5 °C (while doing nothing, just sitting around with finder, aefx pushes it up to 50), the fans fire up and bring them down below 40. few mins later the same chit happens again, again and again.

im not amused :-(

dual 1.8 G5. it seems lots of peeps with dual g5s are having the same problem. still not amised :-(

I wonder what they are doing to make a difference, the are still a minority overall. And all experiencing the same thing. There must be some reason why some computers are doing it and not others.

why are they necessarily a minority? clearly some people here have had problems. i've had fan issues all along with my g5 (rev a dual 2), haven't updated to 10.3.8 yet... i figure that if there's that many people that post about it, there are that many more who don't, and that many more machines in a work environment where the operator doesn't actually own the machine (and thus doesn't care a ton, or just asks it guy), etc... so i'd take those who voice the problem as more than a minority.

Solution for G5 noise?

Did you check Energy Saver performance Option to Highest (from automatic)? There is a report on it. Hope it works for you.

thx!
i just took a look into apple forums, there is the link to a discussion (few posts behind you can find the link). since i had performance on automatic, i switched to highest and now there are no spin ups! its gone!
the only downside is that the normal noise level is somewhat higher than with 10.3.7, i can clearly notice that the fans default speed is higher. havent yet checked with AEFX, i hope it keeps at this level.

btw, does anybody know how to switch back to 10.3.7?

thx, cheerio!

All 3 Good to Go

I've updated:

1. last TiBook rev.: 1 GHz, 1 GB and Superdrive;
2. iMac G5: 1.8 GHz, 1 GB and Superdrive; and
3. PM G5: 2x2.5 GHz, 2 GB, 2x250 GB disks and Superdrive.

The Tibook is WiFi. I have not seen any decrease in signal strength, and it's running fine otherwise.

No issues with the iMac G5.

No issues with the PM G5. I have noticed, as others have posted, that the power light stays out now, but I think that's a bug fix, really. The light on my TiBook only comes on (strobes) when it's sleeping, not when it's running. Now my 20" Al cinema display and PM behave the same way, i.e. the light is off until they go to sleep. The iMac G5 light, however, still stays on when running; go figure.

Also, I *was* having the fan issue that others have alluded to, but this update appears to have fixed the problem, although it will take a couple days to be certain.

I've noticed some minor performance improvements, but nothing breathtaking.

ran updtae from software update on my Dual 1.8 ghz G5.
Computer now hangs just after showing my wall paper, before showing my icons. Damned spinning Beach ball!

Interesting. I had the fan problem before the update *with* performance set to "highest". With the update, the problem, which I agree was annoying, has gone away, so far. I Fold 24x7, btw.

To go back to 10.3.7 you'd have to take your latest installation CD and reinstall, then download the combo update (or the individual ones if no combo update is available for 10.3.7) and apply them. I'd back sure I backed up everything first, but I'm sure you know that.

Well, I had a lovely time with the update. Not ten minutes after I had rebooted my dual 2.5, my system disk was suddenly full. Which ultimately led to a crash. My system Log had blossomed to 69 gigs in ten minutes time. Am I the only one? Oh, and my fans are a hell of alot louder now as well.

Come on Tiger, set me free.

I guess we will see, but it's just a guess. From all of the different Apple sites there are a few people who have had this problem. Make your own conclusion.

This worked for me. Mad problems with 10.3.8 which had never cropped up before. Setting performance to Highest fixed it.

Pleased with the update - sorted out that long-time wait for Mail to open properly.

I am sick of all these OSX updates and security fixes. Considering it takes at least 3 minutes to install and reboot from these updates, multiply that by at least 5 million OSX 10.3 users and we have collectively wasted 15 million minutes, or 28.5 years!

Screw Apple. Can't they release a new dot release that carries throughout it's entire shelf life? Such massive wastes of everybody's time doesn't bode well for a company with an already 1.8% market share.

That's why I keep my important documents, family movies and photos on an Apple.

Thanks Steve.

I can't tell which is worse, the lackluster troll attempt or the maniacal fanboy gushing.

Runs good on eMac!!

Hello everybody!!

I ran this update yesterday and it has been running better than 10.3.7 did. I also notice that the Apps load much faster than the Graphics for certain games are much smoother. Also, if anybody has a iBook G4 and the Eject Key doesn't respond anymore, just restart the machine and it should go back to normal. Also, after you all are done repair Disk Permissions just to make sure everything is running good!!

booted off OS CD and ran permissions repair. No dice! G5 will NOT finish booting off of the hard drive! (hangs just after showing wallpaper (spinning Beach Ball))
Any sugestions? Please!
:(

edit: Disc Warrior didn't fix it either!

Those of you with dual 2.5's that did the 10.3.8 update and have issues did you previously install the 5.1.8f7 June 2004 PowerMac G5 firmware update?

Open GL Gaming Under 10.3.7 Running @1680X1050 everything Maxed

RTCW 98FPS

UTK2004 93FPS Flyby Primeavil
66FPS AVG Bridgeoffate
49FPS AVG RANKIN

Jedi Knight 118FPS AVG

Marine Aquarium 485FPS

10.3.8
Same as above with everything except Marine Aquarium get 5-10 fps less

I have a 6800GT and was hoping these new Open GL fixes and ATI/NVidia drivers would do my 6800GT some justice well it has'nt improved at at all.

Well at least the Fans on my Dual 2.5Ghz PowerMac seem to be doing fine actually they do seem improved over 10.3.7. fans don't kick up as often. For all those with Dual 2.0 and 2.5Ghz machines who really can't stand any noise and at times don't need full processing power just set CPU performance to reduced and Disable your Second Processor and your machine will be whisper quiet.

Well I don't ever see it in software update so I guess I have it installed.
This sucks! I can't boot my Mac except by CD!
:(
Is there a way to roll this back?

Living on the edge...

Well, against my better judgement I installed the update on my 3 day old PB... without issues so far! All seems well with the G4 iMac as well.

I normally wouldn't have done this since I'm a big believer in "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but I figured the worst that could happen is I'd have to format and reload the OS.

BTW, the PB is pretty friggin' cool for a switcher like myself. (I'm a MS Network Admin) I've had the 700Mhz iMac for a few months but that was given to me so this is the first real money I've invested in the Mac experience and so far I have no regrets. Of course I haven't seen the credit card bill yet either! :)

Welcome to the mac world! I was a switcher in 1996 from Windows 3.1 to Mac OS 7 on a Performa 6200 CD. I've never looked back.

You can restore the system from the CD/DVD that shipped w/ your machine and then software update yourself up to 10.3.7.

Seems like that should work.
