guinea pig here ... no problems before, and no problems after.

I ran XBench and got a 1% performance drop on my rev. c PB 12". I don't use a rigorous set of test settings or anything, so this is within the margin of error probably, and of course should be taken as little more than suggestive, but the odd thing was the biggest change in any of the categories came in the "OpenGL Graphics Test," which was down 10% from where it was under 10.3.7. At the very least I make sure I have no other apps running when I do the test ... but was AP on or off, etc., who knows, whatever.

I am sick of all these OSX updates and security fixes. Considering it takes at least 3 minutes to install and reboot from these updates, multiply that by at least 5 million OSX 10.3 users and we have collectively wasted 15 million minutes, or 28.5 years!

Screw Apple. Can't they release a new dot release that carries throughout it's entire shelf life? Such massive wastes of everybody's time doesn't bode well for a company with an already 1.8% market share.

3 minutes is better than 3 days down because of a malfunction or virus. Unless, of course, you happen to like being down 3 days better than 3 minutes. By the way, look at how convenient this is compared to Microsoft "service packs." We should be grateful

Power Mac MDD Volume Issue Still Exists!

Sad to report, 10.3.8 still exhibits the volume problem for me. Does anyone else have anything to report on this? (Yet again using 10.3.5's Apple02Audio.kext, version 2.2.6, instead of 10.3.8's 2.5.0).

Cpu much hotter?

hey guys!
is it just me or does the processor as well as the harddrive and everything else in my ibook g4 1.2 ghz gets hotter after the update?
anyone else had a significant heat increase?

haha im so sad. i love loading up any software update screen just looking at all the new free things for download that will help my machine do its best! PHWAR ill plug up my PB to the network tommorow and get this... *drools*

i probably need help ;)

Fix battery issues?

Does any know if this fixes the greatly reduced battery times that have happened since installing 10.3.6? I have a Rev C 12" PB (1.33ghz)

uControl (3rd party app) stops working after the update. Probably a newer version needed. I am using 1.4.4 right now which is currently the newest.

The precompiled version on SourceForge didn't work on 10.3.7 either (anything above 10.3.4 I think), unless you compiled it yourself. If you have XCode, though, it's a breeze to compile for your own machine ... even though that leaves a bit of a bad Linuxy taste in my mouth to say :)

10.3.8 Messed My Mail Sending Up

Won't consistently send mail any more. Get that server messaage then still doesn't send until I quit Mail and relaunch when it sends upon startup.

Inconsistent problem. A few things sent last time b4 not again until quit and launch.

I'm having the same problem.   I just installed 10.3.8 and got the staticy overdrivien overamplified audio. Now to just remember how the heck I fixed it in the first place.

I'm using a Dual 867 MDD G4, if anyone wanted to know.

This isn't fully fixed. If I put a second finger on my Ti PB the cursor still jumps around. I was hoping this would have been included in this fix.

I don't think that will be fixed. That's been a problem with about half of the PBs I've tried since I had my own in 1998. My latest seemed fine until today. I'm probably just not holding my tongue right. ;)

The update either fixed networking for me or the re-boots on both machines fixed it because now, I can instantly connect either to either machine. :)

HOw??

How are people finding out their times since last reboot..Their "up time"

I install this update on my PB and iBook.. See sig.. and everything is super speed. iLife apps mail ect.

[From the moderator: This was answered a couple of times previously in the thread. No need to post the answer again.]

Me too...

You're not the only one there... thought I was imagining it at first.
Also G4 MDD (1.42 dual)

Had to reduce the system's output to stop it distorting the line-in of my amplifier... that worked OK.

Another successful install. Not much to report yet, no time to use anything right now.

Updates give me an excuse to restart the iMacs.

Pages and Keynote open more quickly.

You've got to be kidding. Every widely-used operating system gets updated regularly. My Red Hat Linux box gets new updates at least once a week - like with Apple, some are bug fixes and some are improvements. My Windows box just had nine critical vulnerabilities patched in this month's update - and BTW the trade press pretty much universally pans the once-monthly MS patch system as being a poor attempt to make the security system look less dire than it really is.

Why not compare the user-hours "wasted" with those operating systems?

Rare my ass. That was a pain. Thank goodness no applications were open with unsaved data...

I had that about once a month until last fall then it went away. It may happen to you often but it can be rare for the population of PBs overall. Doesn't make it feel any better for you.

SMOOTH SCROLLING!! AT LAST!!

Guys, I know this is something quite trivial, but... I've been using a MacMice "The Mouse" two-button and scroll wheel mouse, and I only had one gripe with it: scrolling. Until I realized, while using an eMac at school, equipped with a Microsoft mouse, that the problem should lie in OS X itself... Scrolling on OS X sucks big time when compared with Windows XP (and *even* Windows 98SE  ).

But hey, guess what, not anymore!! At least, not using MacMice MouseCommand drivers! Ok, scrolling still isn't smooth, but it's now acceptable (considering I'm using an 20'' iMac G5 with 1,25GB of RAM...).

I'm just LOVING 10.3.8! :D Really, I'm honest... This is not some "oooh, the system feels snappier" thing. I can *really* see the difference!

Edit 1: Oooooh! I can't believe it! Ctrl-scrolling on Word for zooming in-out is finally usable!! This is f*ckin awesome! :p

Edit 2: Hey, yet another improvement... The Bejeweled Deluxe's sound FX were all distorted when I played that game under 10.3.7. Well, not anymore... ;)

1.4.4 (the latest version, nine months old) works fine with 10.3.7 for me, at least the trackpad scrolling.

[Edit: ops, just realized that I'm still running 1.4.2 of ucontrol, which however still runs fine, despite not being the latest version]

Never heard of this one. No major difference in battery life for me with the last couple of updates.

I've compressed and put up 10.3.5's Apple02Audio.kext file on my server. Navigate to root/System/Library/Extensions/ and move the existing file to the trash (you'll need to authenticate). Then drag the decompressed file into the same location and click "Authenticate" when it asks. Restart and you're set. (Just directly replacing the old file won't work since it's in use.)

My 12" rev c's battery is doing great 4 months in, I have not experienced the problems you mention ... I keep an eye on it with Capacity Meter. It's also usually a good idea to heed Apple's advice.

Seriously, I can get 5 hours with minimal use conditions, and even heavy use (by my standards) still goes about 3 hours. Worst case scenario, you have a warranty issue.

10.3.8 installed on my Albook 15" and Power Mac MDD, no problems so far!

I don't get how people can have months of uptime. If either my Powerbook or Power Mac is up for a couple of hours, they start to get sluggish (apps take longer to open, finder reacts more slowly, etc.). I envy anyone who can have their computer up 2.5 months!

Enhancements, according to Apple:
  • Addresses an issue in which a PowerBook G4 computer would, on rare occasion, wake from sleep with a black screen and not respond to any keyboard, mouse, or trackpad input.

LOL, this happened again while I was running SWU and installing the update. I left it alone for about 15 minutes afterwards, rebooted, and all is well now... At least as far as can tell. I'll have to try putting the PB to sleep a few times to see if it wakes without problems...

Overall the only thing that really changed in xbench mark is in the CPU test: Floating point whent up for an arv. of 630Megaflop to 1.3 Gigaflop ( 175 point to 285 so up from 100 points)

The rest was pretty much the same.
I'll try some game and tell you if i see any difference
