Thanks but no thanks

I've compressed and put up 10.3.5's Apple02Audio.kext file on my server. Navigate to root/System/Library/Extensions/ and move the existing file to the trash (you'll need to authenticate). Then drag the decompressed file into the same location and click "Authenticate" when it asks. Restart and you're set. (Just directly replacing the old file won't work since it's in use.)

OK. Did this and I got this attached message... it also stopped iTunes from working. I'm just glad I didn't trash the original file... thanks for the effort but at least my solution, albeit lower-tech, worked.

It's happened to me. It's a pain in der arse. I'm surprised it wasn't fixed awhile ago; I can't remember the first time it happened.

It does work.....

Hello, I just did it and it does work as described, HOWEVER, you need to do one more step. I had the same error, but this is what needs to be done.

Open Disk Utility in the Utilities Folder. Then click on your drive that has your system on it, and then click on Repair Permissions. It will do it's thing for a few minutes, and will fix your problem. Then restart and enjoy your normal audio again! I'm listening to my crystal clear music once again.

THANK YOU!!!!!

Replies to a couple issues on this thread:

I had the "powerbook g4 can't wake from sleep" on my iBook as well. Hope this fixes it.

Someone said "3 day uptime" was like the Mac OS 9 days. Is your memory really that bad? In those days I felt like 3 hours uptime was good performance.

Just installed on a Rev C 12" PowerBook and now iTunes crashes instantly upon start up. Already repaired permissions. :(

[Update] This only happens when my iPod is plugged in. It's a PC formatted 3G 20GB model. :'(

The precompiled version on SourceForge didn't work on 10.3.7 either (anything above 10.3.4 I think), unless you compiled it yourself. If you have XCode, though, it's a breeze to compile for your own machine ... even though that leaves a bit of a bad Linuxy taste in my mouth to say :)

I might try that. I don't know when installed it but possibly before 10.3.4... I know I didn't compile it... I'm cool with compiling stuff so no worries there... just use binaries if they exist because... why not...

Even worse

Mac would only boot in Safe Mode... fixed nothing. iTunes borked...
Restored original extension, will leave well alone now.

Lets hope they fixed this. I think this was the only bug that has ever crashed my laptop more than once. But, only 10 or less times in 1 year.

1.4.4 (the latest version, nine months old) works fine with 10.3.7 for me, at least the trackpad scrolling.

[Edit: ops, just realized that I'm still running 1.4.2 of ucontrol, which however still runs fine, despite not being the latest version]

Correction: It wouldn't *install* on 10.2.7. The problem was an install-time check.

Odd.. if you followed what I said word-for-word, you shouldn't get any trouble. I've never experienced problems with this replacement, and I've done it for 10.3.6, 10.3.7, and now for 10.3.8, exactly the same way each time. But yes, perhaps a permissions repair is a good precaution. If nothing helps, then I'm sorry :p This fix was posted on MacFixIt during the 10.3.6 period, when this issue actually got publicity. I've written complaints to Apple at their OS X feedback page about this every release, but they still haven't fixed it. :(

Is it just me or has this update made window resizing and page scrolling noticeably faster? Everything seems noticeably smoother than before, even including the thumbnail resizing in iPhoto. Is anyone else seeing this or am i delusional?

so, i had a minor problem with this update on my ibook.

before I updated, i "repaired my permissions". nothing was found wrong.

then i did the software update, downloaded no problem, then restarted.

on restart, i got stuck at a blue screen. it was stuck there for like ten minutes. i shut the lid, and the machine went to sleep. when i opened the lid back up i couldn't wake it back up with the power button.

so i removed the battery and then put it back in. then the power button worked fine and everything loaded. My "about this mac" windows says i'm now running 10.3.8

everything seems okay. although when i opened up iTunes I had to reagree to using the software or something, which seemed a little weird. whatever.

long story short, everythings fine, i just had a "blue screen of death moment". scared me a little.

You should definitely repair permissions again... and restart

Hmm - shall I install this on my brand new 17" PowerBook? which is only an hour old?
Decisions decisions ;)

It won't let me download because it cannot be verified and expanded because I don't have permission to write to /tmp/501/TemporaryItems/com.apple.softwareupdate

Huh? Any help would be appreciated

10.3.8 installed on my Albook 15" and Power Mac MDD, no problems so far!

I don't get how people can have months of uptime. If either my Powerbook or Power Mac is up for a couple of hours, they start to get sluggish (apps take longer to open, finder reacts more slowly, etc.). I envy anyone who can have their computer up 2.5 months!

You need to download a free product like Maintain off of VersionTracker and run everything, at least every month or so. To be more specific, you should run prebinding, repair permissions, empty your local and internet caches, then restart your computer and zap your PRAM once on restart. It's like your Mac taking its vitamins:

So Far

Downloaded about an hour ago, everythings OK so far although the fans on my G5 seem alittle excited at times. I don't know maybe it's just me.

Ok. Copied over the same file from my backup disk from a 10.3.4 installation, dropped it into the Extensions folder, repaired permissions, restarted and that works fine.

The backup wins the day again!

Thanks for the advice... :)

There's something wrong with your system. How much RAM do you have?

G5 fan now speeds up and slows down...

Weird, after the update, my PM G5 fans from time to time get really loud for a couple seconds and then go back to normal.

Anyone else with this issue?

Cheers.

I've has this issue from day one on all Panther releases. I do not believe it is related to 10.3.8.

I have 512 MB on my Albook (1.5 GHz) and 1 GB on my tower (Dual 1.25 GHz), all Apple-installed, hasn't been touched. I do sometimes have a lot of apps open, but it seems to happen even when I only have a few apps open.

I don't do regular maintenance, so maybe that would help. I use TechTool Pro 4 2-3 times a month to check for problems and sometimes defrag. I've used Cocktail and Onyx to do some maintenance procedures, but again not on a regular basis, just whenever I think of it and have time. I'll check out Maintain and see what that's like.

Since it's two different computers and two different systems (I use carbon copy cloner to back-up my Albook to my tower, but it's on a separate hard drive), I'm not sure why it would affect both.

Thank you both for your help, I don't know if this additional info helps out any in determining what might be the issue. Since logging out or restarting brings everything back to normal speed, it's never been that big a problem for me but with people saying how much uptime they've had I was getting jealous. :)
