A word of warning on Tiger and iPhoto

My fatherinlaw just got a new iMac partially influenced by me.

He has had a problem with iPhoto not allowing him to edit photos. I didn't get much time to play with it to see what the problem was and he went to Applecare Australia. They walked him through a fix that moved the photo library, reset iphoto, and then replaced the library.

After he got off the phone he realised that he had lost something like 46 shots. All of them appeared as 0kb. Thumbs for some still existed. No backups...

Applecare spent a little time trying to help him a second time, and gave up...no apology or compensation...

This has really soured their introduction to the Mac.

Heh, it's funny, with Windows they probably had problems after problems, and have severely limited productivity, and had to deal with anti-(insert any buzz word here). And then when they went to Mac, and encounter one problem... they threaten to switch back to PCs.

It's funny. It's just really funny.

(No, I'm not aiming this post to you, aswitcher, although your post did inspire this one. And there's a known issue with iPhoto and Tiger, sadly.)

yeah 10.4.2 should fix the issues with tiger and what not.. though it won't be the last point release of tiger ;)

Actually they haven't had a computer at home for years. My fatherinlaw is a Cobol programmer so hes pretty comfortable around computers and understands things go wrong.

I think what makes this not-so-funny is that Applecare Australia should have been aware of this problem, and yet they walked him right into it and then shrugged their shoulders...

Applecare should be smart enought to at least suggest people backup certain files before they start "fixing" things over the phone if they have any concern over Tiger and iPhotos reliability.

Oh, and now my PB wont recognise my camera...I have downloaded soemthing like 5500 photos from it previously and now its giving weird errors like couldn't create the jpg, and unreadable files on the camera...So I used the Canon supplied software and it worked a treat. I then imported into iPhoto and it was fine with them... This 10.4.2 update better be a real fixer for all of us who paid good money for Tiger to get a shade lemon amidst those stripes.

Apple better fix the MDD Audio Volume Bug!

I'm freakin' tired of guessing when Apple will fix the MDD G4 Tower Audio Volume/Distortion bug introduced in Mac OSX 10.3.6 Panther that's still present in Mac OSX 10.4.1 Tiger. They better get it right and fix it in the Mac OSX 10.4.2 Update cause I'm pissed as hell!

I've already submitted a bug report twice (first during the Mac OSX 10.3.6 Update release and second during the Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger release).

**Attention MDD & FW800 G4 tower owners**
Please submit a bug report to Apple about this audio volume problem if you like me who unfortunately experiences it. I know I'm not the only one out there as others sent me a pm and discussed about it in other Mac forums.

yea hopefully then weather wont crash on me everytime i start up now and by weather i mean in dashboard :p

this is the only problem I have with Tiger. I haven't had any of the other issues with programs that have been described here.

OpenGL Improvements

Hopefully we will start to see some of those OpenGL improvements that Apple is supposed to be working on.

Update needed mail 2.0 unstable!

Since recently upgrading to tiger i have had massive problems with Mail 2.0. I have lost email, it tell me i have no email in some inboxes when there is, it won't always quit and so i have to force quit etc. Have trashed plist etc. I hope that this next update will provide some much needed fixes in mail and some other apps. My switch to tiger has been far from smooth :(

I too am hoping and waiting for 10.4.2 ASAP. AppleInsider suggests that this is going to be the mother of all bug fix releases. All I can say is - whenever it comes, it's about time…

I am hoping that today is the big day!!!

What times does Apple usual release updates like this?

As of late Apple has no routine with respect to release times or day of week. It will be when Steve decides to make the update available.

sorry im a bit lazy to read all this right now. but do we know if 10.4.2 will enable Q2D Extreme?

It sure would be nice to get the update to Tiger this week. :) Not that I have any big problem with mine, but it would be nice. I am addicted to any kind of updates. :D Next week we can expect the iTunes 4.9

Is anyone else having problems with GUI responsivness? I've mentioned this in other forums... scrolling up and down menus in Cocoa apps is laggy. By scrolling, I mean moving your cursor over menu items... it seems laggy to me and it wasn't like this in Panther or in Carbon apps (such as iTunes). Try it out, you'll notice a big difference!

I get some flikkering while viwing RSS visuliser in sys pref and while in iMovie. Very strange.

All is quiet on the Apple front...

Where is 10.4.2? (If Apple is still banging out bugs, great. If not, give us the tasty mother-of-bug-fixes already.)

And I am psyched to try out Podcasting. Come on Apple. Show us some love already.

I got 10.4.2 but its not!

I recently ordered and recieved Tiger (see post above). The delivery note stated that the version was indeed 10.4.2 vut subsequent to the upgrade, software update gave me 10.4.1 to install, so i did. I did not check the version on the prfiler before doing this. but now i definitely have 10.4.1 . Surely if i had actually recieved 10.4.2 i wouldn't have needed the 10.4.1 patch? Any comments?

I sure hope its released today. Nothing so far.....

With Apple not following its usual MO lately, it could be anytime during the day. Won't count out the possibility until 8pm EDT.

raincoat are you saying that your Mac OS X Tiger box says that it contains 10.4.2?

It's a guessing game by everyone. One day is as good as another, I admit that I have no idea on the actual timing for a release. What are you using to base your prediction for Thursday?
