For me, on my G5 iMac:

Image previews in the Finder are "holy crap" faster.

Page rendering in Safari is "holy crap" faster.

Unfortunately, the dreaded "forward and reverse scrub can't be used in mini mode" problem in iTunes 6 is back for me. I thought 6.0.1 fixed it, but it came back. Was hoping, by some odd chance, that 10.4.3 would fix it. Nope - still there.

is iphoto faster for any of you?

also, in iphoto when you select "red eye" or "retouch", there's a little green dot to let you know that you've selected one of those. is that new or has that always been there? i usually use PS to edit pix but that feature struck me as being new...maybe not.

iPhoto is much faster to open and close now. I use to dread opening iPhoto because I can't do anything for like 10 seconds. Now it's about 2 seconds on both ends:D :D :D

Wireless Problems fixed, but still windows file sharing weirdness

Ah, the update finally fixed all wireless issues. Unfortunately Tiger still gives me a cold shoulder when I am connected to a windows share, and lose the wireless connection. It spins and spins and won't let me do anything, anyone else have a solution to this problem?

And I call BS on your statement. Yes, permissions are a crucial part of any UNIX based system. But you do NOT find a "repair permissions" application or tool in any other UNIX based OS than Mac OSX. Ive used GNU/Linux since 1997

It's not so much of a problem only if the execute bit gets removed from an app or the write bit from a logfile etc.

Of course it relies on the package receipts being in place.

BTW RPM has this feature --setperms from the top of my head.

Look (Pic): I just logged in and I have most of my RAM used up, usually, more than half is free right after a login... Strange...

Free RAM is useless RAM. Any "free" RAM should be used as cache and buffer for IO-operations.

Disappearing minimize butttons

Yes. There is a bug with launching Front Row for some reason. No idea why.

Reinstall the original bezel framework (if you swapped it) and try uninstalling x-keys. This should bring the minimize buttons back. The following was posted to MacSlash:

"To fix front row re-edit the script to include the following...

tell application "System Events"
tell application "Front Row" to activate
key code 53 using {command down}
delay 0.5
key code 53
end tell

Credit to Marenta."

Save the newly edited script as an application (run only) if you'd prefer to launch that way.

Wish I was unethical enough to pirate the software and try this out.:D

I know. I was noting that I saw the same description of the architecture in the 'about this computer' pane under 10.3
 woopsie, missed that connection... busy being a smarty pants.
also can't answer your question because I have only been using tiger, no need to even fire up the other ibook with panther. tiger has been rock solid for my machine and this update improved the glitch I was having with safari crashing on a music web site. nice! ;)

For me the update has meant the system is generally is much faster, but the startup is quite slow and the hard drive works overtime in the last stages after showing my desktop image.

Thanks

I repaired before hand and it said I was using special permissions for 2 items, ever since the last update. Now it says I am using special permissions for a ton of widgets, several repeated a few times...
It's just informational, it's not actually fixing anything when you see the "special permissions" entries.

Anyone with iTunes 5 do the OSX update?
If so, did it force an iTunes update, also?

Okay, I updated anyway, and it didn't screw with iTunes, that I could tell.

Darn, there's still incomplete support for third party bluetooth dongles. Headsets still can't be used with them :(

Help!!!!

Well i updated last night and when i restarted i got the grey apple screen then it went straight to a black screen and a command line prompt of localhost:/ root#

Now i no next to nothing about unix commands apart from exit and reboot. i've run fsck but it bombs out and says something about invalid extent entry. I've tried to boot into safe mode which had no effect, i've done a hardware check which gave me a green light on the hardware in the Powerbook (1.5GHz 15") If anyone has any suggestions i'd be grateful!

I'm at uni and i've left my Tiger disk at home so only have the software restore disks that came with my PB but they have 10.3 on and i really don't want to have to down grade then upgrade again when i go home.

Stuck borrowing my housemates dell at the moment. REALLY wish i hadn't updated now!!

What Uni are you at. If it's Sussex or Brighton, PM me!

My mini has developed an annoying habit after the 10.4.3 upgrade: If I leave it unattended for a bit, I return to find a menu asking me if I'm sure I want shutdown or if I'd rather restart or cancel.

This dialog never appeared before and is annoying. Any thoughts on the cause and how to fix it?

Thanks.

After the upgrade, did you let it reboot? :)
I have a Rev A 1.42GHz mini, and it's not giving me that problem.
I manually used the combo update, though.

No probs here ;-)))

:) Not one problem here until now, hate to use the word but all seems to run "snappier".
This also fixed my home banking problem, had to use Netscape navigator 7.02 until now (7.02 for crying out loud!)

Thanks Apple for getting things right for me!
:):D

Oh yeah,
On my dual MDD 1G the file was 56,8
Took about 1,5 min after the chime.

Single User wireless

From the Apple 10.3.4 update page:

"Allows Apple Wireless Keyboards to work in single-user mode."

Hallelujah!, I thought when I read this. This one burnt me when I first got my iMac G5 with wireless keyboard and then found I couldn't work in single user mode. But after the upgrade it STILL doesn't work. I can enter into single user, but I cannot enter any text from my wireless keyboard. Worse still, since I can't enter a command to restart, I have to do a hard restart to exit. Anyone had success with this yet?

No such problems on my rev A Mini. I used Software Update FWIW.

That menu/dialog sounds like the one you get when the power button is pressed (I've done that a few times by mistake on my PB). I wonder if maybe it's mechanical - like the button hasn't reset properly or something (although you'd think you would get this question all the time then?) Anyway, maybe pressing the button a few times to make sure it is seated properly? A real long shot I know but all I can think of.

W00t, the sleep fix for tablets is in! That one was obnoxious.

What was the problem? I use a Graphire3 as my mouse.
I hate when I tell it to shut down, and the tablet driver unloads, and then I get asked if I want to recover space from the vault, since I can't mouse to the skip button and I can't seem to use arrow keys or tabs to do it.

Things seem fine here after the update.

However, I'm not sure when this started happening: Divx encoded movies over a certain bitrate seem very choppy when they were not before.

With some tablets, the display and computer would refuse to sleep or dim if you left the pen or mouse sitting on the tablet.

That's no fun! (still avoiding using file vault instead of manually encrypted images here, I'd like to see it mature enough so that it doesn't ask about stuff like that.)

Help!

After installing the update on my iBook G4, a little Unlock Keychain box keeps popping up when I restart, and I don't know what password I'm supposed to be entering into it. I only have 1 password and that's for my user account, and it doesn't accept that.

When I click Details, it tells me its something to do with Airport. I tried entering my wpa-psk (?) but it didn't like that either.

I updated my 12" rev 4 ibook last night-- 2 things: the bluetooth icon is gone from the menu bar-- I went to system prefs and "show bluetooth icon in menu bar" was checked, I even turned bluetooth on-- still nothing.

and when I woke it up this AM the screen brightness slider was all the way on dim-- no idea why.

I dont use bluetooth currently; does anyone know what's going on?

Weird, my Graphire didn't care about mouse placement. But I made sure and loaded Wacom's own tablet drivers, instead of the default OSX tablet drivers. Maybe that was part of it.

As far as the vault goes, once I changed my account password, then shutdown, and of course it shut down after clearing empty space. When I turned it back on, I couldn't complete a login with either password, because the .sparseimage was encoded with the old password and the account password was new. Luckily, I had ssh enabled, so I logged in remotely, changed the password back, then I was able to log in at the console. I'd report this, if I knew where. :)
