As far as the vault goes, once I changed my account password, then shutdown, and of course it shut down after clearing empty space. When I turned it back on, I couldn't complete a login with either password, because the .sparseimage was encoded with the old password and the account password was new. Luckily, I had ssh enabled, so I logged in remotely, changed the password back, then I was able to log in at the console. I'd report this, if I knew where. :)

More weirdness... I decided to decode and quit using the FileVault and the secure virtual memory right afterwards, and it's just now rebooted and let me log back in. Interestingly, I now have 3 gig more space than before. So now I wonder... was that just "wasted" space, or did the decode process lose some files?

IMHO, you would be foolish to do so. It's several shades of magnitude better.

Those who have the most problems speak loudest.

Just make sure you haven't moved your apps from where OSX expects them, and you might want to fix permissions before you update, also. See, I've only been a mac user since 10.4.1, but I'm learning :)

I agree. 10.4.2 is a train wreck. For the issues that still remain in 10.4.3, at least you are getting 1,000 bug fixes.

10.4.3 and X11 - all right now

ok folks, I have one important message for you:
DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR COMPUTER WHILE YOU'RE ILL!

The fever that kept me home today also made me make some mistake while upgrading:
1) installed 10.4.3
2) X11 crashed 2 seconds after start up
3) Tried to solve it by (and here comes the big mistake) reinstalling X11 and therefore downgrading it!
4) didn't help, so i did `rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.x11.plist`

That's what you should do first when an app behaves erratic!

5) X11 complained about my ~/.xinitrc which was the cause for the crashing.
6) put the the important line `xset -b` from ~/.xinitrc to ~/.bashrc (a bit dirty but it will do) and got rid of ~/.xinitrc.
7) X11 starts fine but X11 windows still stayed in background
8) Saw the lightbulb over my head and reinstalled 10.4.3

OK, that's it, now everything really is fine again!

Edit: this is weird tho.... it seems my bluetooth icon has been removed from the silver bar on the top...no clear way to get it back... not a huge deal but i liked knowing if i had bluetooth on or if a device had connected. Weird

This happened to me before (had nothing to do with the updates though). Just
go to the bluetooth settings in the preferences pane and then re-check
the checkbox that says "show status icon in menubar".

Honestly, I can't believe I'm going to be saying this... but after this update my iBook feels really snappy. I mean, usually I see others say it and roll my eyes because I don't believe it but my iBook G3 really feels like it has a new life. Applications seem to open faster, switching between apps is more fluid, Safari doesn't spinning-beachball on me for ridiculous reasons and Mail.app even gets new mail without locking up the entire window...

wow

hehe jk :) :D  ;) :)

Oh, and I plan on installing 10.4.3 as soon as I can get it from the University updates here. I don't want to spend $.04 per meg on downloading updates.

It's about friggin' time!

This better resolve my DVD-RAM drive not being able to read burnt DVDs. Has anyone else had that problem? And did it fix it? I can't update until later today.

I have installed this update on a Powerbook G4, an iMac G5, DP G5, a Mini, and the Xserve at work. All is well!

For whatever reason, the iMac and the Powermac were the smaller 50-something-MB updates. The others were the full size.

Things seem to be running pretty well at the moment. The installation process too quite a while on my 1GHz Ti PowerBook but no problems. Performance seems to be better but there is a lot of disk activity for some time after initial startup. Spotlight does indeed appear to be improved, although its still somewhat shy of what I had been hoping for.

I note that iCal seems to be highlighting notifications in the same way that Mail highlights unread e-mails. Not sure what this represents but when I checked iCal I noted a series of notifications that informed me that invitations had been received but the e-mail address of the notification used differed to the one used in my "Me" profile in Address Book. I am unsure what this means since there seemed to be no way to find out what the e-mail address was that caused the problem.

The only potential issue that I've encountered is that during the extended disk activity I noted that my Airport seems to be "screeching". This sound has disappeared now but I wonder what was causing it...

I'm glad my system was already up to date because the 58MB download took
6 hours on my POS 2.4 kb dial-up signal.

I'm glad I remembered to turn off Unsanity APE.

Everthing seems fine so far.

I have been hesitant to say this, but after several hours with this update, things do seem to be working noticeably faster. Safari, whether due to the update or something else that has happened in the last 15 hours, is noticeably quicker. I might be able to use it as a primary browser with this new speed boost. Finder and spotlight are also noticeably better.

One odd thing that happened is my BT icon in the menu bar changed. I had a hacked icon set with blue dots, but now it is greyish. The non-hacked icon in .2 was black.

I seem to have a problem with iTunes after downloading the update.

Ive repaired permissions, rebooted. Now every time i quit iTunes it goes and reopens itself.

Any one else have this problem before?

Edit :- oops, problem found. Salling Clicker. As i was using my Nokia to control iTunes it kept reopening it.

Eclipse startup on the PowerMac Dual G5 at work seems faster. Overall things feel a little snappier. All good, although no noticable new features so far (then again I've only been running it for an hour).

For those that look at some of these posts and think they should wait, think about your system.

Have you downloaded a few hacks, haxies or enhancers for Safari, Mail, Addressbook, etc?

Are you using apps that skin or change the base look of your windows?

Have you downloaded pirated or hacked or borrowed software?

Have you shuffled the placement of the core apps that come with the OS?

Are you using maintenance apps that clean your cache, logs, etc?

Do you have a lot of apps starting up at log in that aren't base apps?

If so, either disable, trash or rearrange your system to the more standard setup. Then load these things back into the system after the update to see if they work or cause problems. It is probably pretty rare that the core apps and OS will cause any problems.

I haven't had any problems with any of these updaters that caused me or my machines to panic or act all flakey. This latest dot 3 update is the best I have seen for Tiger in so far for as additional speed and cleaning up some annoying little bugs. Lots of new little features have been added as well if you read some of these posts and from my experience using it.

how do i get rid of the debug menu in safari?

Quit Safari

Open a terminal window.

Type the following...(Leave out the %, that represents the prompt)

% defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 0

If you wish to re-enable it, type...

% defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

Snappy?

I'm not sure the "snappy" even really applies in the way it's being used.

snappy |?snap?| adjective ( snappier , snappiest ) informal 1 irritable and inclined to speak sharply; snappish : anything unusual made her snappy and nervous. 2 cleverly concise; neat : snappy catchphrases. • neat and elegant : a snappy dresser.

I think what people are trying to say is that OS X seems faster, or quicker perhaps, but not snappy. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought I'd at least offer the thought.

All this talk of a snappy OS X just had me thinking about snappiness and what it means to be snappier and the honor inherent in being the snappiest.

Sorry if this this comes across as a bit snappish

10.4.3 now supports third-party Double-Layer DVD burners. iLife apps, for example iDVD 5.01, now allow DL burning without hacks.

:)

I got the 56.8 mb download on my PM 400. From chimes to desktop took about 4 minutes, so about two minutes more than usual. I have noted already a little increased responsiveness, though I could just be fooling myself into seeing things that aren't there. :p

How did you activate this in the first place? Safari enhancer? Another similar app? If so, trash the app and wait a few days for the update.

If you look on dictionary.com, you get this:

snap·py ( P )
adj. snap·pi·er, snap·pi·est
Informal. Lively or energetic; brisk.
Informal. Smart or chic.
Snappish: a snappy retort.

So as we're in an informal forum, I think we can get away with it. ;)
