They must have a lot of monkeys banging on keyboards at apple. Everything is moving speed addict fast.

Thats because they installed Intel Core Duo chips in all of the Apple employees :p

Power PC and Intel Seperate

Here at work I've an iMac G5 and an iMac Duo. The update to 10.4.5 for the Power PC said (Power PC) and the update for the iMac Duo said (Intel) are they installing separate binaries or are they just designation to the Universal?

Anyone else have trouble with the menu items disappearing. The only menu items that appear are from external apps (gmail notifier, adium). There's no clock, wireless, bluetooth, etc. I have a 12" PB 1.5.

Messing around some, I think it has to do with the front row hack. If I try to go to keyboard preferences and click on keyboard shortcuts, it always crashes... Anyone know of an uninstall for the Front Row hack? Thanks

I'd like to know about this too. I could only resolve the black borders issue by reinstalling 10.4.2 from DVD, then upgrading to 10.4.3. (not 10.4.4)

My iPod shuffle works again now too. So I'm not tempted by this update until I hear all-round good news.

what about the bug where the finder drew black borders around some thumbnail images?

This update fixed my airport issues that I got in 10.4.4.
(Airport would not allow me to connect to WEP protected network,
I tried everything but didn't get it to work)

now it's working again :)

12" PB 1,5 Superdrive

Solved the slow boot times problem!

Well I am happy now. With the 10.4.4 update, it would take over 2mins to boot. Now it takes less than 1min. :D

Just updated by dual-core intel 20" iMac. The update was 40.6megs. Everything seems to be running fine!

Portable Home Directories. Users with portable computers can now enjoy synchronized versions of home directory folders locally and on the network. Portable Home Directories synchronize selected content across local and network home directories based on the most recent version of a file.
In that case, I think the name is misleading. :(

:s No I'm not having any of those problems. I still have my trusty Airport, clock, sound, battery menu items. And FrontRow still works like a charm as does the system preferences pane for keyboard...

That's bigger than others had reported for their models, (PPC), so perhaps Front Row issues have also been resolved in the Intel iMac update.

We're now up to 10.4.5, so that's looking good for Leopard before the end of 2006. Must update my sig to reflect the current offering. Twice in one day, first for the new config of the MacBook Pro I will be getting, now this. What a (nice) pain. :p

Beat me to it...

What's "Portable Home Directory"?

It's a feature in OS X server that allows (obstensibly mobile) users to sync up their home folder with the server. This would allow for roaming profiles in a lab environment, or essentially a backed up home folder for a mobile environment.

It's a neat idea, but still a bit of a network hog. And also a bit immature, but getting better. Really only applicatable to those in a Server/Enterprise environment.

"Daylight-saving time is coming to all of Indiana for the first time in more than 30 years.

In a history-making drama, the Indiana House voted 51-46 late Thursday to pass the controversial issue, which has dominated the legislature, coffee shops and kitchen tables for four months.

Gov. Mitch Daniels, who made passage of the time change one of his top economic priorities, will sign the bill soon so that on April 2, 2006, Hoosiers will join people in 47 other states in turning their clocks ahead one hour.

The climactic vote at 11:36 p.m. came after a half-hour of emotional testimony, in which lawmakers on both sides of the debate brushed away tears. They had fought about the issue all session. Some argued the changes are needed to boost Indiana in a global economy and erase the state's backward image. Others called it an unnecessary intrusion in Hoosiers' lives."

A 30 year battle over changing a clock. No wonder nothing ever gets done in this country.

my ibook install was only 6.4mb...but the intel 10.4.5 install is over 90mb! geez, what is getting fixed in this update?

You bring up a good point. I think it would have been hilarious to be in the heated debate over this issue. I wonder if they have any full-time anti-DST lobbyists?

I've had the disappearing status items for some time, in both Panther and Tiger, on both my PowerBook and eMac (see sig.) More often on the PowerBook. Seems random when it happens. Not specific to the Front Row hack (but it does seem to happen more often on my eMac since installing the hack. But I did apply that hack immediately after the 10.4.4 update, so it could have been either's fault.) Front Row on the PowerBook, and 10.4.4 on the PowerBook, didn't seem to affect it at all.

But I can always get into Sys Pref to bring them back.

I'll have to give 10.4.5 a few weeks to see if it makes a difference.

Read the Apple link. A whole bunch of Intel-related issues, and only a couple PPC. Probably an all new Rosetta, from all the Rosetta-based fixes. Hopefully it means a speed increase in Rosetta, too.

And then the federal government went and screwed them over by changing the dates that the clocks change. Give Indiana another 30 years to get their law patched up.

So, no mention of a fix to the slow wireless networking on Intel iMacs (1/4 - 1/3 the normal download speed) when using WPA-TKIP encryption?

That's the only issue I have with my iMac. Well, I'll install it anyway when I get home. I might get lucky.

Mandated changes in algorithms help keep us programmers employed. Somebody in Apple got paid to adjust the code to match current law.

Just out of curiosity, did Microsoft already release patches for these DST changes for the various versions of Windows?
