maybe the update just kills the maxxus x86 patch:eek:

I bet Apple will do this every time the OSx86 guys try to release a patch.

Once we hit OS 10.4.92, that might get a little tiresome. :D

Since it sounds like Intel users are having large update sizes for 10.4.5, I'd say it was either purely a coincidence or at best they just released it a little earlier than expected.

If this happens, I really doubt that it was done on purpose. There just wasn't enough time between the releases for Apple to implement and test any measures to kill the patch. Final release builds have to be tested for at least a few days. I think the timing of these releases was just pure coincidence, or (gasp!) Maxxus's work is some weird and twisted plan of Apple's doing.

i think i read in another thread that those people would be upgraded at no charge...;)

None have shipped yet, so:

Automatic Upgrade 1.67 > 1.83

Automatic Upgrade 1.83 > 2.00

Paying option to go to 2.16 with no loss of place in queue if you phone before 18th.

All showing various shipping delays, but that MAY just be placeholder dates until the system settles.

It must be bloody chaos in that factory!

Or Apple heard about an impending release through the grapevine.

Funny... About This Mac reports that I'm running 10.4.5 even before I restarted, even before Software Update is finished...

The "Optimizing" phase is just redoing the application-library prebindings to improve launch speed. The software is already installed.

Going under

Sounds like everything is going pretty well.

If you don't hear from me in 30 mins, send a search dog (one of those Cugo types with a barrel of scotch).

Probably, but I always thought that you needed the restart of the system to, well, restart the system, and start using the upgraded version... ;)

****ing Restart Time

I waited like 10-15 minutes at the gray Apple screen when it restarted. I finally decided to hold the power button and restart it again. It went normally the next time, well a little longer but not too much. This has been happening every time I update Tiger. But I don't see any problems other than that, just a warning to everyone.

Just updated using SU and Camino 1.0 scrolls like butter!

Agreed - restart was way long again. Not as bad as 10.4.3, but still pretty bad. Especially for such minor changes.

Five years may be an unacceptably short time table for some owners. My boss still uses his 400mhz sawtooth (from 1999).

I still use all the machines in my Signature and they are turning 6 and 7 years old this year. Both run Tiger at a very acceptable speed. Use the 350MHz G4 everyday as a server and the iBook several times a week for library research. Works better for typing and the internet than my university supplied 1.6GHz Pentium M Dell

Funny stuff

I'm responding to myself. Updated. Grabbed a beer. Back up. No problems yet. 11 minutes (or so).

Let the beatings begin!

Did the update...
Fixed the tearing issues in Front Row... Nice... :)

only problem... everything works but itunes through front row... wont play any music... just sits there when i choose a song...

Also...
safari seems to be much faster than before... if thats possible..

OK... i take that back... i rebooted airport express and the imac and now front row works perfectly! Thank you apple! you have fixed my only noticable issue so far... she is running superr fast, is very quiet, and she is sexy as hell :)

JK

Safari slower...

Hmm. I updated to 10.4.5 and now it seems if anything, Safari is a touch slower. Both to start up, and to render pages. Of course, this may be an illusion and wrt. page rendering, it's hard to say as the sites themselves may be a slightly slower, but it sure feels as if Safari is slower to start up... the Safari icon seems to do more bounces than before... YMMV.

I don't know yet if it fixed any of the Safari crashing and hanging... from the description of what they addressed in this update it doesn't seem they really did much of anything to affect Safari performance, BWDIK. Hope springs eternal... Safari has had a lot of hanging and crashing for me :( ... maybe one day Apple will get it right, or at least on the level of FF which never crashes or hangs for me (version 1.5.01).

My boot time was blazing as always, about 29 seconds from chime to desktop. Safari is blazing as well - perhaps because my machine is maxed?:)

Even if Apple stops updating software, that doesn't mean you can't still use the machine. I doubt they will continue making universal binaries for 5 years. I think 3 or 4 years past the release of the last PPC Mac is more realistic. That means around 2009 or 2010.

Here's what I got.....

Obligatory 'startup times change?' post...

Well, on my Blue and White G3 (G4/500 upgrade, 448 MB RAM, stock 12 GB Maxtor HD,) boot time is identical, give or take. (See old '10.4.4 shocking boot speed' thread.) I did three runs in 10.4.4 to verify (same results as my reply in that thread,) and three runs in 10.4.5 (after an initial 'finish install' boot run that took a lot longer,) and have the same 35 seconds from chime to 'ready to use'. The gory numbers are:
5 seconds from 'bong' to seeing the Apple log on screen.
14 seconds to the 'spinner' appearing.
29 seconds to the 'Starting OS X' box appearing,
33 seconds to the wallpaper appearing,
34 to the menu bar and dock appearing,
35 to icons ready to click.
(39 seconds until HD activity stops, but it's ready to use at 35.)

As the B&W is my 'test' machine, I'm going to give ..5 a week or so before updating my other machines. (When I do the numbers again, though, the PowerBook listed in the linked thread above will be much faster. I disabled FileVault, Secure VM, and multiple users. I realized I don't actually have any 'sensitive' info on it any more.)

that sounds cool! I always like it when apps tend to run faster... I will update my computer today, and hopefully, there won't be any bugs in the software.

That happened to me too (well, NOT 10-15 minutes, but yeah). 10.4.4 was always really fast at starting up for me. It seems to be going faster now though.

Intel imac folks

intel imac folks, starting with build 1165, what are you getting as the required update load?

it seems some people have reported 6.5mb, some 40.9mb, some 42.3mb. I just download the update from the apple site, it lists as only 14.5 mb, but when I go to software update it shows 40.8mb.

not really sure what to do, I mean if I run the local file now, it will most likely then download another 25mb?
