One thing I noticed in the description page on the Apple site is this:

You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you've modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)

Guess that means folks who use Shapeshifter and the likes should be careful when updating.
Has anyone with Parallels installed tried the update? I'd hate to be the guinea pig.

Parallels is fine!

I'd suggest the Parallels is an OS addition, not a modification. It does not modify system files in any way. Rather, it simply loads a kernel extension. Nothing to run for the hills over :D

do i need to install this? my intel mac mini is running fine. Still havent done the SMC firmware update 1.00 from a month or so ago. If it aint broke, don't fix it. Security updates i'm all for (though the sheer amount drove me away from windows), but i can't see anything on the apple list of updates that i need.

8 minutes

8 Minutes from start of download to posting this message. 2.5 G5 39MB update. Everything working fine.

My update was 133MB. Downloaded in about 1 minute (on a nice 24Mbps connection, ~3.1MB/sec), 17" MBP

Initial impressions: I wish I hadn't. Machine froze on shutdown and I had to power it off. Machine took about 4x longer than normal to reboot and log in. Subsequent reboots were about normal speed again.

Computer is running rather slowly right now, I'm hoping that changes.

Oh brother. Does anyone know how to flash the update back to 10.4.6? Cuz the CPU whine got significantly worse (i had to bump QuietMBP from 150 to 100).
Archive and install.

Taking dangerously long

Im posting on my moms macbook now, but my powerbook has been on the blue screen with the spinning circle (not beachball) for over a half hour. I dont think this is normal. How do I stop this???

Is that during the shutdown just after the update's installed and downloaded?

This has happened to me a couple of times over the years too. Usually I'm really not patient enough to wait even 10mins, let alone 1/2 hour! I'd just hold the power button down until it powers off, then start it back up. Don't get scared during the long pause at the grey Apple logo at startup... now that's a really bad time to force a power-off, because it's at that point that the new files are being installed.

(edit) standard disclaimer: just because I've got away with it doesn't mean you certainly will :) But after 1/2 an hour.... what else is there to do?!

Oooo. Not so good. I'm posting on a Dell (yeah, I know) bc my PB is just booting up. It's *just* gone past the blue screen. Phew!

EDIT: Took less than 2 min
