the new mail is amazing. i love the data detectors by far the best feature. I wish they could work in safari too. they are so easy. i also love the new ical, very iphonish inspired design. I just wish the RSS feeds would show up all together like they would in safari, in mail, instead of as single entries. haven't gotten into spaces yet. and i haven't gotten into the mail stationary yet either, in fact i can't see where that is.

I wish each space had a custom dock though.

my only other complaint is that they didn't seed final versions to developers. meaning there are so many programs i rely on that don't work. I understand they don't want it leaked and all but seeing as how it did leak, i think this was a very stupid move.

i also love the new find in safari, in the old safari it would block the text in grey, you could never see it. I just wish there was a way to stop that download window from opening. They should either build that into the browser or find a way to automatically close that window after the download. It is so superfluous.

ALSO: if you are using the blue theme, not the graphite theme. the red, yellow, green, minimize maximize buttons are really over saturated.

Does anyone else's Boot Camp partitioned drive seem to be recognized as a "CD, DVD, or iPod?" For my desktop, I have Finder preferences set to not show hard drives, but this partition shows up when I select to show "CDs, DVDs, or iPods" in the Finder preference window. It still has the hard drive icon, so it is a little strange. Just curious to see if this is the case for anyone else...

Everything else is awesome!

Guys... I'm not sure how many of you know this... BUT!!!!

If you open in Cover Flow mode, say... your Applications folder...

You can type the first letter, or first couple of letters of the name of the program to instantly zoom to it!!! TRY IT OUT!

For instance...

Opening apps, then pressing P will zoom you to Pages... pressing PH will zoom you to photo booth!!!

Same goes for the Documents!!!!! If you type the first few characters of a document you think you are searching for... ZOOM it goes right to it!!!

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

Could we do this in Tiger and I just missed it for 18 months?

:)

Richard, typing the first few letters of an item to find it on a window have been around for 16 years, since System 7!!!
Are u a Mac OS X-only user?
I think I'm gonna start a Thread to find out which version of Mac OS people started with... I am a System 6 guy, 1988 ... Things have really changed since!
Cheers
Patrick

I'm installnig on a mini 1.66 2gb ram tonight. Went to event and got a fmaily pack. If it gi4es smoothly I'll reply later.

Hard drive full

I did a archive and install update this morning, and it all went well, the new OS is pretty cool, much faster opening my pictures and folders and Safari is zipping along, but... it sucked up most of my 60Gb HD ... I had only been using about 12gb previously. I save my photo's to the Lacie HD mostly...

Is there away for me to do another install that won't suck up the HD??

Thanks

Go back to Tiger if all you can do is complain

Is it striking anyone else here that the majority of the complaints being posted are tiny little anal and nit-picky things?

Everyone is talking how they liked how such and such looked in tiger, some people are saying that they'll never use some of the new features, but not considering that even though you may not, millions of others probably will.

It's starting to sound like those old-timers running NT 4.0 servers and sticking with Windows 98 because its the most stable. Why upgrade at all if all you actually want is tiger. Why not roll back now and stick with tiger...

Take a step forward, and reboot your leopard installation with a little bit of positivity and realise that all the criticism you have will probably fade in the weeks to come as you yourself realise that in fact it is awesome.

Genuine bugs, I am not disputing, and they must be resolved (and by past experience we know they will be) but gee some of the tiny little garbage issues here it's making the ridiculous windows 'fan boy' comment start to sound even a little less ridiculous.

By the way, the whole 'fan boy' thing, why do windows users pull that one to explain why someone wants to use something other than windows? So all the suckers that upgraded to vista immediately, are they 'microsoft fan boys'? I'm thinking perhaps its a genuine fear that perhaps it might be better that makes them want to sling mud at it, keep the masses running windows, shame them into sticking with Mr Gates.

Some Updates:

-- I do not seem to suffer from the hang ups while transferring files via external HDD. I transferred over my 25gig Video folder and it not only transferred but seemed to transfer a tad bit faster than it would in Tiger. It didn't contain any files over 4gb though and I was using Firewire.

-- The indicators which tell you which applications are running are very difficult to see. Not only do they blend in completely with the dock they are hindered by the reflection of the icons. Very difficult to make out indeed.

-- I forgot to talk about Coverflow. It's quite awesome I love it. It's really fast too. Loads up instantly. Browsing in general is just better and kind of exciting using coverflow. Coverflow+Quicklook = Perfect way to browse an extensive directory.

-- I suffered my first crash when trying to delete a 6gb directory. I believe I sent it to the trash and then pressed "empty trash" and OS X told me that it's already in use. I pressed Stop and OS X crashed. I had to hold down the power button and do a manual shut down. After restart I got a message telling me "MAC OS X unexpectedly quit." At first my guess was I tried to empty the trash while Time Machine was backing up the directory I was trying to delete which made it crash. However, after a restart I tried to delete my Videos directory while Time Machine was off and it said the exact same thing: "Already in use" I pressed stop again but this time it didn't crash. The trash wouldn't empty though it kept saying "Already in use" while it WASN'T. Had to log out and then log back in to get it to empty. I suspect the culprit is Quicklook.

Saving some HDD space

I did a archive and install update this morning, and it all went well, the new OS is pretty cool, much faster opening my pictures and folders and Safari is zipping along, but... it sucked up most of my 60Gb HD ... I had only been using about 12gb previously. I save my photo's to the Lacie HD mostly...

Yes, you could opt to choose CUSTOMIZE before you complete the install, and remove all the language translations and printer drivers. You can always install only the printer drivers u need later. It will save you something around 2GB+ of storage space if i recall.

Criticism

Pros:
Spaces is really really nice. I'm already using 3, so I'm glad it scales up to 16. That's 28,224,000 pixels of joy!
I like some of the new iChat stuff.
Things seem a bit snappier overall.
Safari seems more compliant with web standards than before.

Cons (sadly the longer list):
Translucent menu bar is utter crap. Until there is some solution to this, I will not be installing on any more of my computers.
Dock is worse. This is better, but the new dock takes up more space for the same size icons, so in order to reclaim your precious screen space, you need to have a dock with smaller icons. Still, with a light desktop image, it looks like a dark pit of doom. I look forward to hacks to make the dock lighter.
The new folder icons are atrocious. I thought we had moved past flat folder icons with OS 8. They look bland and ugly.
Window shadows are considerably darker and longer than in 10.4. This, along with translucent menu bar, darker dock, darker windows, and overall lack of color make this the most depressing OS X ever. Macs are supposed to be cheerful and bright. Leopard is just dull and dark.
Mini-windows, or whatever you'd call them, that only appear when the app they belong to is at the front, now have their close buttons red even when you are not mousing over them.

I'm sure I'll get used to some of these things, but currently I will not be switching over completely until there's a fix for the menu bar and the window shadows.

I installed Leopard on both a Core 2 Extreme iMac and Core 2 Duo MacBook. The erase and install on the iMac, of course, went perfectly fine. The archive and install on the MacBook also is equally fine.

I like the new operating system a lot. However, you have to keep in mind that it's going to take some time reindex your hard drive for Spotlight and make your initial backup with Time Machine. Both of these tasks, with the addition of .Mac syncing slowed my iMac to a crawl.

Everything appears to be running fine, except I can't get Adobe Photoshop CS3 installed. I had the same problem with this iMac when I purchased it. Therefore, I think it has more to do with Adobe's crappy installer than anything else.

Overall, I'm very pleased. I'm now anticipating 10.5.1.

iMovie doesn't work

I have installed Leopard, iWork08, iLife08, ...
I love leopard, it is really fast on my mac pro, but iMovie doesn't work, it crashes at boot. Someone else noticed it?

Lorenzo

Maybe on a desktop where you have a scroll wheel it's be fine... but I'm on a stupid one button Macbook Pro.

ARGH ARGH ARGH ARGH

Anyone else get this? Or am I just retarded?

You're just a little bit retarded. :)

Try using two-finger scrolling on your MBP's touchpad. Works fine.

Couple of things I liked/disliked:

-Love the new deep shadow on focus window

-Don't like how the font looks on the translucent menubar, it appears pixelated.

Well I have a blue screen. So do apparently a lot of people. So my first impression is that Apple knowingly shipped buggy software.

Leopard smells like Vista. I hope that things improve.

Not really interested in wiping the drive on my MBP just to have the joy of spending hours reinstalling software.

A Troll I See.....

Once things have settled down, you might get rid of some of the language files

I did a archive and install update this morning, and it all went well, the new OS is pretty cool, much faster opening my pictures and folders and Safari is zipping along, but... it sucked up most of my 60Gb HD ... When I drag the applications folder onto the dock, it looks like the address book with a piece of paper behind it...what's up with that. Not a big deal but very annoying...any ideas?

Install went wonderfully on my imac and mbp, specs below.

All and all I am very happy with it, life changing no, but worth the upgrade for me.

Only issue I seem to be having is the imac seems to have gained about 10gigs of weight I can not explain..

Edit: The MBP gained some weight as well
