Does swearing somehow imply a level of maturity? Because in fact it is quite opposite. A 5 year old can swear, but it takes maturity and intellect to convey your thoughts and emotions with class and decorum.

Essentially, any idiot can swear. So if you choose to swear, how do we separate you from the idiots?

And as for censoring, there are a good number of us who enjoy reading at a much higher standard than some care to write.

Enjoy.

Clearly, swearing isn't the only prerequisite to being an idiot.

It still is the same name and application domain: version control software

PS: I hope Apple simply buys their name and does not try to squeeze them out of it...
No, they're completely different. The average consumer will never even work with Subversion, ever. Versions is like Shadow Copies on Windows, it just creates a history for each file you edit, letting you restore an older copy if needed.

That Versions app is used for a totally different purpose.

this is a wonderful example of how extremely manipulative apple is. notice that on windows it has always been possible to resize windows on every corner? an notice, that most windows on windows can be fullsize?

well, i still remember very clearly how bad this is, it confuses the user... no one needs fullscreen... windows is bad, because the apple concept of only resizing on the bottom right corner is more logical bla bla bla.

and what is the new INNOVATION now???

I find the whole MS Windows resizing puzzling. Why now and why is this better?

I use Windows and I tend to go to the bottom far right instinctive without thinking if I need to resize just because I also work on Mac's and it has become instinctive.

As for maximization really in todays market where most people have at least a 21 if not 24 inch monitor do people really maximize that much that Apple would change. Have they run out of good UI ideas?

Folder Merge, Replace, Duplicate?

Windows XP always had folder and tree structure merging. Now Windows Vista has Duplicate and Replace, Windows 7 further simplified the interface with "Yes to All", "No to All", etc.

I hope, hope, hope, Finder catches up to basic core folder operations that I miss from Windows 95. It would make life so much easier than having to spend hours sorting through sub folders or try to get Automator to not-so-automate BASIC file operations.

Is that too much to ask? Welcome to 1995.

Oh, and native FTP with upload in the Finder would be nice. FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

How is the quick look function in windoze? Oh yes, there isn't one. How about cover flow, expose, spotlight, built in cloud computing, easy networking, app store, FaceTime, time machine, not having to deal with constant pop ups from the os, the bundled iLife suite, the complete lack of viruses ( shall I go on? )

Manipulative? How about having to buy and subscribe to services just to be able to protect the os from viruses, or an operating system that costs five times more to upgrade?

so it is not manipulative that for 15 years the resizing on every corner is bad (because it is from windows) and all of a sudden they impement it and - hey - it's a brand new feature!

the quick look may not be as fast on windows, but at least it can do something the mac can not do: you can double click a photo, fullscreen it (WITHOUT BORDER - iphoto can't do that) and watch the NEXT photo by pressing the cursor key. you can even delete a photo in fullscreen.

quickview is nice in theory, but not good if you want to show people photos in a row. you are forced to put it into iphoto.

btw: facetime is a great feature in osx? sorry, but who needs it? skype does the job way better - across all plattforms. btw: i use pc AND mac. but unfortunately there is a lot i miss on mac os, so i don't see any point in switching completely. both systems have advantages.

I kinda like the one corner resizing. It seems better and less easy to accidentally resize a window. Anyone with me on that one? Plus you don't get those ugly double arrowed cursors.

although, maybe it is just because I am used to it.:apple:

I don't think you will accidentally do this any more than the people who oppose Cut-paste in Finder would accidentally use CMD-X. There are already a ton of apps that use this method of resizing windows inside the apps. I have to say I have not once resized a window by accident.

What irks me with this video is that the +button still does nothing useful. And Mail is probably just reskinned and still won't download from my gmail account reliably. Mail is also responsible for the most crashes on all my macs. I sincerely hope they have rewritten it.

EDIT: Window resizing from any corner just cuts down on this: I need two cm more space in the upper left corner. My window is already level with the bottom edge of the screen. So I need to: 1. drag the window up ; 2. expand it in the lower corner ; 3: pan the contents of the window back to where they were.

That's three stages that in Lion will hopefully be just one. It saves a lot of wrist pain when you have to do this dozens of times every day.

Grey icons like iTunes? Yuck.. It's like a scene out of 1984.

Colour LCD's exist for a reason

Exactly what is with less color?

Seems Apple now likes Monochrome :(

I would rather have the color of the old Itunes any day, not a deal breaker but I just like colors. ;)

Fullscreen in OS X is different than in windows. The Maximize function merely expands whatever you are looking at into a giant window. In OS X, it's a new GUI that's designed for the full screen (just like in iPhoto '11.).

so which fullscreen is better?

i can tell you, that many people are very confused by the fullscreen mode in iphoto. why does a program all of a sudden handle things totally different, just because it is fullscreen? and why can't you view a photo in fullscreen even if you are in fullscreen??? this is so incredibly stupid of apple that you can not display a photo fullscreen (= without any user interface elements).

if apple handles the fullscreen in other applications the same (wrong) way, then good night.

i am not convinced that the mac os should be so close to ios. one is mouse operated, the other touch operated. in theory gestures sound cool, but how do people use them? have you ever tried swipe-expose on the magic mouse? impossible!

i also notice that many switchers from pc don't like to use gestures. expose, minimize to desktop etc. they are confused. apple doesn't even explains to them, if you don't tell them that these gesturs exist, they don't even know!

there are even >>mac os users<< who don't know of spotlight. it is not exlained, so they doubleclick on files instead of pressing space etc.

i get the feeling that apple is constantly trying to fix things that were not broken. they are constantly changing things that don't need to be changed. the slider elements for the different views of the window are one example. they were fine as they were, now you have a confusing greyed out thing that does the opposite of what you are used to (grey was clicked, now it is the general state).

Did you notice the colors, or better yet the lack thereof?

It's just like iTunes: no ****ing colors. I want some colors in my OS. Not all this gray, dull stuff.
Hey Steve, I am sorry you're sick man, and I hope you get better soon. But ****, don't work out your depression on us. Give us back our colors!

Edit: WTF? What is with the censoring? Is this a site for 5 year olds, or what?

I agree 100%. I love colour, that's why, when I got my first iPod Touch, I jailbroke it - just to have a background.

With iTunes you can change the grey icons back to colour. And if people can do that, there's nothing stopping them doing that to other apps as well - even changing the icons - like a theme.

IMO the innovation in lion is in the less visual things: bringing versioning to mere mortals and application persistence/restore.
Only with some applications. Safari in fullscreen isn't different in any way.

i am missing only to things: copy/paste files and the option to change the font size of the system.. on snow leopard are to small

It's a slider, with the raised slide button behind the selected option.

That UI change is going to confuse a lot of users. How many people are going to be wondering why 3 buttons are pressed and one is popped up? If it's a slider, make it look different than the other buttons in some way to indicate so. When I first looked at the video I was wondering what was going on there. I was hoping for a second that it was possible to mix views. I've always wanted coverflow to be an available pane over any of the other 3 views. I find coverflow useless as a viewer most operations.

I actually personally quite like the monochrome icons on the finder.. I also like that you can resize from every corner, although this is something that has always been available on Windows for a long while, still seeing it come to the Mac is great..

The multi-touch gestures are good, but hard to manipulate, especially with a Magic Mouse, I mean we all saw how it faired in the OSX Lion Preview, it didn't go too well, having owned a magic mouse for over an year, I have found some gestures a bit difficult, even the two finger swipe requires a bit of a learning curve..

I also don't understand why there isn't a cut feature, well there is one but only for text if I remember correctly.. I just think its a lot easier to cut and paste, instead of dragging onto folders and folders..

The other thing that annoys me is that theres no OpenGL 4.0 support =/..

Apart from that though I have to say that I quite like Mac OSX Lion, the new features look quite good, but I won't know until I try it myself.. I really like the updated traffic lights, they look much better then the previous..

Then go into Appearance and change the default behavior to "always visible."
Is this "always visible" scrollbar an overlay scrollbar that gets in the way of the window content?

And are there scrollbar arrows? Even though I don't use the arrows frequently, sometimes they are just what I need.

Of course, on a phone I would have preferred an overlay scrollbar that isn't always visible, and I would never have asked for scrollbar arrows on a phone. But this is a computer, not a phone.

I must say, so far I haven't really been impressed with Lion. There is nothing really major in Lion that i am excited about like I was with Leopard, which actually made me a mac switcher. The stuff I saw in Leopard just blew me away(Time Machinie, stacks, quicklook, cover flow).

I hope that will happen again with an OS release...

Cmd-x

Does the finder support cut and past instead of only copy and paste. And yeah I know that one can drag the files and hold cmd pressed. But it
is very unhandy. Oh and please make a window transparent when one drags it around for better viewing and please allow me to see how much of the bandwidth us used of my new thunderbolt connection. Please allow me to play sound through my headphone and speakers and choose which application plays through which. So a kid can play a game and we can still listen to our music. Please split up iTunes and combine mail, iCal and address book.

The negative:
I kind of miss the colour - I find myself having to spend a few extra milliseconds to identify the icons on the sidebar - from a design perspective this is bad practice - colour is an identifier; it allows people to distinguish things easier, so taking it out is just dumb.

Another dumb thing turning the view buttons into a slider - sorry but how stupid does that thing look sliding from left to right in a hurry! When I first saw the video I was wondering why there were 3 view option selected - actually got me excited that you might be able to combine view options - but no, it's just gimmicky add-on.

I think mission control would be a lot less needed if Apple started introducing tabs into their applications - imagine tabs on Mail and the finder instead of having a load of Windows floating about and making clutter, overlapping one another. It seems Apple is just using a band-aid fix when if it overhauled the UI it wouldn't need all these organisational apps.

The positive:
Improve Quick-view looks like it got some much-needed extra functionality.

New scroll bars are cool so long as there is an option to keep them on always (which there is) - more screen real estate woop!

Mixed/ concerns:
Flexible window resizing - neat idea but what was wrong with the one-corner option? I can get why they added it but now every time you go near an edge you're gonna get that ugly slider icon; basically feels a lot less coherent.

The devices list should be at the top!!!!

Hoping Apple will address some of the UI issues - I know a lot of people will disagree with me and that's fine, but I still hope Apple will listen to feedback on this OS either way. If it turns out in the end anything as good as Leopard was then we're in for a treat!

Works great for me. Love it.

My biggest gripe with OS X finally resolved. hooray!

One corner resizing was like a car with a steering wheel that only works at intersections. Some people apparently were afraid they might accidentally steer off the road if allowed to control the car at all times.

The features you reference were introduced by NeXT in the late 80's. Help me remember who founded NeXT again....

Of course, I don't know why it took Apple this long to incorporporate functionality they had on the shelf.
