What a pointless rant. U comment on any corner resize as being copied from windows! Is that all u can come up with?! How is the quick look function in windoze? Oh yes, there isn't one. How about cover flow, expose, spotlight, built in cloud computing, easy networking, app store, FaceTime, time machine, not having to deal with constant pop ups from the os, the bundled iLife suite, the complete lack of viruses ( shall I go on? )

Manipulative? How about having to buy and subscribe to services just to be able to protect the os from viruses, or an operating system that costs five times more to upgrade?

I'm sure you missed out tons ... but good job there;)

the window resize option is kind of nice but i can't find my self purchasing lion only because of those little gimmicks.

People have said similar things since OS X first came out. If you ever go back and use a previous version of OS X (let alone an even earlier version) after a few months it is quite amazing how much better the new versions feel.

Trust me there will be far more to the update than the obvious.

quickview is nice in theory, but not good if you want to show people photos in a row. you are forced to put it into iphoto.

No, you aren't. If you select multiple items and invoke Quicklook (which you can expand to borderless full screen) then you have the option to advance through the selection with the arrow keys or play as a slideshow.

Have you actually used Quicklook?

Cheers

if apple handles the fullscreen in other applications the same (wrong) way, then good night.

I think fullscreen in Aperture 3 is very nice for both viewing and editing, you choose whether you want the tools available or not. I've not seen iPhoto, I guess it must be different.

The default behavior is iOS-like scrolling, but as long as you have a multi-touch trackpad on your notebook, you can go into Mouse/Trackpad and uncheck the topmost option to revert to traditional scrolling. (I imagine all desktop models have a similar option, too.)
I find it strange they've opted to do this as the default. It works on iOS because they are touch-screen devices... The graphics on the screen are following the finger movement. Trackpads and mouse pointers are a very different form of HCI. For a start, the mouse pointer doesn't move when you scroll, so the finger metaphor breaks straight away. If anything, the equivalent to iOS should be click-and-drag (like it is when you use the iPhone Simulator), but that wouldn't be nice.

I'd be surprised if they don't switch the default behaviour before release... It's just... weird.

Seems like the only prominent color left is in the "stoplight" at the top left of each window. I'm curious whether the iTunes stoplight is still vertical. I thought Apple was going to change them all. If not, it seems confusing to have just one stoplight in a different orientation.

Windows XP always had folder and tree structure merging. Now Windows Vista has Duplicate and Replace, Windows 7 further simplified the interface with "Yes to All", "No to All", etc.

I hope, hope, hope, Finder catches up to basic core folder operations that I miss from Windows 95. It would make life so much easier than having to spend hours sorting through sub folders or try to get Automator to not-so-automate BASIC file operations.

Is that too much to ask? Welcome to 1995.
+1,000,000 !! Lack of folder merge is one of the most major peeves I have with Finder. In fact, I have to use VMWare Fusion running Windows sometimes just so I can get it done. Apple has FileMerge in with its Developer Tools, but it's one of the most horrible, confusing piece of software they've ever written.

I don't get the coverflow while in icon view. Anyone can explain how exactly is that useful/logic?

Did you notice the colors, or better yet the lack thereof?

It's just like iTunes: no ****ing colors. I want some colors in my OS. Not all this gray, dull stuff.
Hey Steve, I am sorry you're sick man, and I hope you get better soon. But ****, don't work out your depression on us. Give us back our colors!

Edit: WTF? What is with the censoring? Is this a site for 5 year olds, or what?

+1. I totally agree. Enough with this gray crap already!!!

I just got a new sandy bridgified MBP, first mac. I love OSX already, but it's very surprising to me that it's taken this long to be able to resize from any edge corner like in Windows, Ubuntu, etc. That seems so obvious. Looking forward to Lion!

Wish list:
+ There was an option to set the zoom button to behave like the Windows "maximize" button, i.e. filling the screen (except the top bar) not just bigger.
+ Releasing a double-tap drag would stop dragging, but this requires a third tap or waiting a few seconds... i keep inadvertently moving windows. Yes, I have drag lock set to off.
+ Colors other than monochrome or blue.

If there is a way to do these already, please let me know!

I'll be sticking with the traditional Mail look and I'll be keeping my sidebars visible. Everything else looks dandy, though.

Wait. So buttons that are pressed are now in their normal color, and unpressed buttons are darker? Where's the logic in that? Really confusing.

I mean, look at the picture below. Optically it seems like the icons, list and cover flow buttons are pressed down (thus selected), and the column view button is up.

That is why I use three finger to drag.

How about pinch to zoom? Did they 'fix' the fact that you can also zoom icons when selected? I disabled it because I kept get the maximized icon on the desktop, but now, sadly I can't use it anywhere else.

It is annoying to have to select all of the photos you want to view in Preview. If you click on one to quick view, the program should allow you to scroll/swipe to the others in that folder.

I don't mind the disappearing scroll bars actually. Seems like they "stick" while they're active too.

It acts more like a scrollbar now rather than a pressed button. I think the video showed it sliding around.

I find three-finger drag pointless, because you still need to be over the title bar in order to use it. That's like making it so you can't do two-finger scroll without being over the scrollbar. Weird! And I find that dragging with three fingers is really quite wobbly and doesn't respond well.

Out of curiosity, would anyone know what systems will be supported? Would every Intel machine be supported or is it going to require some hardware based 64 bit goodness to run

Since if it just requires an Intel Processor, then Apple would have to be commended for supporting systems that are 6+ years old (up until 10.8 release anyway).
:apple:

i am not convinced that the mac os should be so close to ios. one is mouse operated, the other touch operated. in theory gestures sound cool, but how do people use them? have you ever tried swipe-expose on the magic mouse? impossible!

Gestures work better on a touchpad, such as the one on a MB or MBP and there is the Magic Pad. Gestures and mice usually don't mix.

Yes, it looks as though Mac OS X Lion is 64-bit only. The minimum spec to run it is Core 2 Duo (Core Duos will not work as they are only 32-bit).

So my newest Mac is going to be obsolete soon :(

Honestly don't get all the complaints. Don't knock it til' you've tried it.

Am I the only one who LOVES the minimalist gray icons (which bring the focus on the content), overlay hidden scroll-bars, launchpad, mission control, new mail, multi-touch gestures, switch-style bars, and all the other enchancements and new features in this update??? The introduction of iOS elements is welcome and makes pefect sense to me.

People always complain about over new interface changes! Quit whining people and don't knock it til' you've tried it.

I can see I'll be command-tabbing through my Apps a LOT more, to see what million apps I have active to find which i can kill!

Also, you can force the scroll bars to always show in the system prefs.

Full screen is nice (like the 'new mail' overlay) but I hate the pop down menu bar and it feels too high. i.e. the browser should have a little breathing room between the top of the screen and the search bar.

damn preview removed my graphite option too. hate those traffic lights!
