The ones with 32bit chipset are very old, the first gens of MB. Don't worry, the new MBP will run SL perfectly fine.

Can't we just restrict the usage of the word old to toilet seat iBooks and black powerbooks ?! Otherwise my white '06 Macbook will only grow more and more depressed. I fear this may lead to an acceleration in its development of new 'skin wrinkles' (aka cracks) and it's already doing that quite fast enough for my taste... ;)

Anybody have a list of versions and bits. That is what is the version numbers of the open source packages supplied and are they built as 32 bit or 64 bit binaries. For example:

Java
Python
Ruby
Curl
Bash
and the list goes on.

Dave

I'd love an answer to this too.

Java 1.6
Python 2.6.1
Ruby 1.8.7.72
Curl (WTF is this?)
Bash 3.2.48(1)
GCC 4.2.1
Perl 5.10.0
PHP 5.2.8

Proof and how about the GMA X3100?

The only reason it wouldn't have one is that Apple was to stupid to write it.

The 950 and x3100 are supported under x64 in Linux and Windows. I doubt Apple would be the ONLY OS to not support it.

Powerbooks and iBooks are obsolete and legacy. Anything =< 08 MB/MBP is old. :D

Is the only advantage to ordering SL through Amazon (vs. apple.com) is that shipping is free?

Because it's d*** cheap and you got the best OS that can run on your Mac. :)

Most people who pirate software (especially OSX/Windows, Photoshop, and Office) say they do it because the developers charge too much. Apple knocked 78% off the typical price for a major upgrade and people are still going to pirate it like crazy. The same thing is happening with Windows 7 at the moment; people are downloading the RTM even though it was only $49 at Amazon (sadly more expensive now). It's not a about price, it's about getting everything for free.

Here's to hoping that $29 DVD doesn't require a previously installed version of Leopard and you can just do a clean install.

A nice clean install that only requires you to pop in the Leopard disk to verify. That would be the cat's pajamas, but I'm thinking it might be update existing system only...

From System Profiler in 10a421a except for Java, I got that from Java Pref, curl, bash via Activity Monitor.

Java:
Version: SE 6 only and both 32bit and 64bit are installed.

Python:
Version: 2.6
Last Modified: 5/19/09 2:43 AM
Kind: Universal
64-Bit (Intel): Yes
Ruby:
Ruby:

Version: 1.8.7.72
Last Modified: 6/11/09 2:55 PM
Kind: Universal
64-Bit (Intel): Yes
Curl:
curl -V
curl 7.19.4 (universal-apple-darwin10.0) libcurl/7.19.4 OpenSSL/0.9.8k zlib/1.2.3
Protocols: tftp ftp telnet dict ldap http file https ftps
Features: GSS-Negotiate IPv6 Largefile NTLM SSL libz

Activity Montior shows it to be running in 64bit
Bash:
GNU bash, version 3.2.48(1)-release (x86_64-apple-darwin10.0)

Activity Monitor shows it to be running in 64bit.

Steve jobs should hold the tablet unveiling show in the middle of some random amish town. :p

Nah, he should go international and hold it up to tempt the natives of some third world country along with the missionaries. They'll have to choose between The Word vs. Word. It will be a sick spectacle indeed.

...

Seriously, what a name. XP It's great news, though! I'm really looking forward to my first OS upgrade.

Er, what if one bought the computer with Leopard already installed? Like me... =P

Just a short question from good old Germany

Hi there,

just reading the posts and began wondering ... Am I supposed to run into any problems (missing german localization or any of this stuff) if I buy the new MacOS and iLive / iWork in America? I'm on holiday there pretty soon ...

(And sorry if this question was asked a thousand times before ...)

Cheers!

They should offer Snow Leopard at $29 for everybody, not just Leopard users.

The whole point of Snow Leopard is all these performance enhancing technologies that developers have to code for. Are developers going to invest the time and money needed to code for these performance technologies that only 20% of Mac users have? Apple needs to aim for near-universal adoption of Snow Leopard in order to make it worthwhile for developers to code for it.

Two questions:

1) is apple offering a family pack for snow leopard, and if so, how much is it likely to cost?
2) Is the up-to-date program DVD the same as the regular DVD, just offered at a reduced price?

Thank you

No, it shouldn't make a difference where you buy it, since the system disc includes all available localizations. The printed manuals will probably lack a German translation, but who cares...Are you sure it'll be that much cheaper though ? Maybe you could profit from a German student rebate or something?

Are you planning on buying the Mac Box set or iLife/iWork and the SL-upgrade seperately ?

EDIT: Never mind my question about you being a student - looking at your profile, I guess you're not.

answer to 1 Yes they do offer a family pack!
answer to 2 No they give you a upgrade disc, when I did the up to date program for leopard they sent me a leopard disc!

Hope This Helped
