But out of interest, in layman's terms, what is the deal with 64bit then?

It was touted as one of the big gains of SL, yet that suggests its effectively meaningless to a big proportion of Mac users?

Lepoard allowed 64-bit apps, and had a 32-bit kernel (which was cool and unusual in that most people wouldn't think that a 32-bit kernel can manage 64-bit userspace, but it can). On Leopard, most apps that most people ran were 32-bit, just as they had always been.

Snow Lepoard encourages 64-bit apps, with almost all the apps that it comes with being compiled as 64-bit (a lot of 3rd party apps will go 64-bit in their next major release, but won't recompile as 64-bit just for Snow Leopard bragging rights). Snow Leopard allows a 64-bit kernel, but doesn't encourage you to use it.

Unless you huge amounts of RAM (certainly more than 16GB), you just don't need the 64-bit kernel. Just like Leopard, the 32-bit kernel runs 64-bit apps just fine, and allows them access to lots of memory (e.g., 10GB if you have it).

There are a few performance benefits you might see with a 64-bit kernel (e.g., 32-bit apps will see fewer TLB flushes), but mostly you're not going to get anything other than bragging rights and issues with 3rd party kernel modules that haven't yet been ported to 64-bit (e.g., VMware Fusion).

Thus, the 64-bit kernel isn't the default for anything other than Xserves right now.

Just two things

I love what they done with SL, it runs nice and speedy.

But two items that they did not addressed would have been in my list:
1) Remove the need to logout to switch GPU on the MBP
2) Would have been nice if SL could use both GPU's concurrently to speed up work. I can see that Intel can only go so far with the current set of CPU's, and that in the future we will see systems with multiple GPU units taking more and more work away from the CPU. As such it would be nice if SL could take advantage of multiple GPU's today. I guess I may need to wait for 10.7 for this.

Bought two new macs and ordered the update SL for 9.95, expected to see them today....naw they shipped via Snail mail with expected delivery of Sept 1.

Apple that ain't right........:(:(:(

I called yesterday and was assured it would ship to arrive today even though my order said not yet shipped. I did not receive it today. Just called tonight and was again told it was prepared for shipment and it may arrive on Saturday. I expressed my disappointment at having ordered over a month ago and not receiving it today. He offered me a $25 coupon toward a purchase. I told him that was great and was plannning to buy an iPod touch soon. He upped it to $45 toward a $300 purchase. I know what I'm buying on sept 9.

Update: just got my ship confirmation. Shipped on the 28th via usmail. Delivers on the 28th. You would think that UpToDate customers would be first in line having just spent big money on a new system. Guess I'll just watch to see any issues that arise and maybe wait for 10.6.1.

Everything seems solid so far. Easy install. Took about 45 minutes. iWow does not work so back to crappy iTunes sound:(. Quicktime kinda sucks though. The controller just sits in the center of the video. I just don't like the way it covers it. It's way too much like divx player. You don't have alot of the same easy trim controls as QT7. Preview for video in finder is nice and you can scale it pretty big. No more massive options for export if you had QT pro. It seems you have to go through Final Cut Pro:mad:. No option for QT7 install or copy and paste in QT. Just some things that kind of anoy me as far as QT.

Whoa after all this time how I've been listening to iTunes.

Never knew about this neat little plugin. Amazing how nice iTunes now sounds.

Picked up a family pack from the Town Square Apple Store in Las Vegas with a buddy of mine that also grabbed his copy.

SuperDuper! is cloning my current machine as we speak and I'll be doing a clean install in an hour or two. Then comes the painful process of installing everything else. (MacPorts, CS4, Textmate, iWork, iLife, Firefox, Adium... and that's just the start!)

Nice! I was there too! took an early lunch break lol!

Need Help!

Ok I just installed SL on my MacBookPro... and so far so good!
However I went to install it on my iMac (I got the family pack) and during the install the system restarts but when it does that my iMac ejects the DVD.

So when the computers comes back from the restart it can't continue with the install. What can I do to prevent the system from ejecting the Install DVD?

Thanks,

EAO:confused:

At home now, having a cup of organic black tea, waiting for the drive to zero out with the new version of Disk Utility on the Snow Leopard DVD-ROM. I am installing it first on my MacBook (unibody 13"). After playing around with it (i.e., customizing) I will install it on my Mac Pro. All data is backed up on the Data drive on the Mac Pro - I made sure of that. LOL Also synced all Bookmarks, iCal, and Contacts to MobileMe. So I am set to go soon... :D

Listening to the British band, Seize, while waiting... Just got their new CD today from Amazon. WOW! It's called "Constant Fight." I got the Limited Edition though - the second CD has some really cool mixes, etc. I love the song "Craving For More (Push The Mushroom Mix)."

what color calibrator are using? I use the spyder 3 pro and its working fine. Any way some things actually seem slower after upgrading and others faster. safari seems much faster but things like skype and the spyder 3 software and other 3rd party programs seem slower. safari also seems to be using about half the ram on average then when I was using 10.5 weird lol. The gamma changes are bothering me a little but I will get used to it. I also seemed to gain about 10gb's of free space!

Exactly. I have the Spyder 3 Pro as well. No matter which calibration profile I create, I get the following scenario:

1. Current Profile: Default
2. I click on the new profile
3. New profile is visible for about a second (max)
4. Colors jump back to default.

So I can calibrate as much as I want, it always jumps back to the default one. I have no idea how to fix this...

Just finished recalibrating my Air's screen - no problems with the Spyder2Pro software under Snow Leopard. Of course this process just confirms that these glossy displays are... shall we say "suboptimal". :D But calibrated is still better than not. :p

i pre-ordered from amazon, and it says it will be delivered monday. i didnt want to wait so i bought one from best buy today. they had tons in stock. i will just return the amazon one or see if my friend wants the other i dont need two copies. since it was only 30 bucks, i figured it was worth it to not have to wait in case i had an issue i would have all weekend to fix it

mine installed quick, no issues. i wiped out the drive first and it installed right quick no issues. just one update for some remote thing. i wasnt paying attention

everything seems good here

That Rosetta update was annoying. When I installed SL, I wasn't near the internet. And it kept popping up constantly until I took the Macbook near a wireless to get the download. Other wise, no hitches.

I just installed SL about 5 minutes ago and it's GREAT!!!

It's quick and responsive, Safari loads even faster, and the minor features give a great touch!

I also love the new Gamma!

Picked up my copy locally today, erased the drive, and in the process of reloading apps and migrating data now. All in all, pleased with the speed increases, small savings in disk space, and the few tweaks here and there. I have not yet run into any bugs or issues.

I can confirm that, on my first gen 17" MBP with 2 GB RAM, Core Duo, there is certainly a significant boost in ordinary tasks. No more waiting 3 minutes after startup for things to "get going" when first opening apps. Scrolling, menus, etc are all much smoother. This IS worth it even if you have a first gen with no Core 2 Duo.

64-bit

I'm pretty sure mine is running 64-bit, because when I open a 3rd party preferences pane it needs to 'close and reopen' in 32-bit mode before I can use it. See below.

Note that I have not changed any code or anything, it has defaulted that way.

And I'm running an Early 2008 Macbook Pro - got back more than 20GB of HD space, incredible!
