For those wondering why SL defaults to 32-bit mode, over on the Apple forums some senior posters were saying that the only real benefit would be to those who have >= 8GB of ram installed, and the reason they chose to default to 32-bit was to ensure compatibility with drivers (64 bit requires entirely new drivers).

Another thing that was mentioned was that even in 32-bit mode, you can run applications in 64-bit mode, so there doesn't seem like a lot of need to run in 64 bit. Here's the thread:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2130976&start=0&tstart=0

Apparently it doesn't matter to me because I have a 32-bit EFI, so I'll be unable to run the 64bit kernel.

So pretty much your saying that the whole hype around snow leopard being completely 64bit is bull.

If you want to find out how much HD space you really saved, compare the exact byte count instead of GBs. I saved 12GB of real space. If didn't take into account the new way space is reported it would look like I saved 18GB.

Even so, that's still fairly impressive. I don't know my byte count beforehand, but I imagine the difference would have been similar to yours.

On another note, does anyone know where I can delete (I think it's a script which 'listens' for the push of a button on my old-school scanner) called Scanwise Button Monitor? Every time I start up SL asks if I want to install Rosetta so that it can run.

Sorry, incorrect

I'm pretty sure mine is running 64-bit, because when I open a 3rd party preferences pane it needs to 'close and reopen' in 32-bit mode before I can use it. See below.

Note that I have not changed any code or anything, it has defaulted that way.

Nope, System Preferences is an application, not part of the kernel. The System Preferences app has been re-written in 64-bit, but in the case on needing to load a third party preference, it will reload into 32-bit.

Installing now.

Found one minor issue, Address Book will not import from the ABBU backup file I cut earlier today, despite the fact that if I "View Package Contents" on the ABBU file I can clearly see the cards for all my contacts within.

_EDIT_ - Strangely enough, after I closed and reopened Address Book (command+q, not just minimizing it), the contacts were there. Strange, but it did work afterall.

The New Snow Leopard will not allow Digital Audio Output as it did with the previous Leopard OS X.

From where? QuickTime? I noticed this too but just figured it was because I didn't have the Pro version as it only plays the stereo track of my movies. Although I tried QuickTime 7, selected the AC3 track, and my stereo did not recognize the DD 5.1 track either where it did before. That sucks. BTW, VLC plays the AC3 track fine and the Sound prefpane shows it as digital output.

My observations of Snow Leopard on my Mac mini 1.83MHz:
- install took over an hour
- on first boot got a spinning beachball for about 30 sec and I thought it was hung until it finally went into Setup Assistant
- boot and shutdown times don't seem any faster to me
- initially seemed like something was still going on behind the scenes as dragging windows and resizing them seemed sluggish and stuttered
- on reboots my iTunes keeps launching whereas it wasn't doing this before (I have a Shuffle plugged in)
- Sound issues (see above)
- MediaInfo Pro crashes, even the new one 0.7.17.3, which is supposed to work w/SL

This all in the first 10 min of using it. Not too impressed so far...

Interested in this too...

Is no one else having problems getting the Digital Audio Output setting to work?

Have an intel mac mini (solo) as a music server and it feeds my DAC (stereo) and need to know if digital audio out works before I install snow leopard. Sending music via iTunes so it's a standard setup.

Anyone confirm this?

kinda lame. i get sucked into preordering and everyone else gets to enjoi it before me.. they should have shipped it earlier to match the dates up.. way to b an ass apple
How exactly were you suckered into pre-ordering? You couldn't have just waited until today, walked into an Apple Store and bought it there?

Yeah it just on May 6th I bought MobileMe from Amazon for $68.49 plus $8.98 it came by FEDEX 2-Day on May 8th, so I assume that 2-Day was FEDEX Delivery. I can accept it coming Tuesday but not by UPS if it would have came today I wouldn't be mad, but Amazon.com justifying $8.98 for using UPS Ground for FEDEX 2-Day Delivery isn't right. UPS Ground delivers the same timeframe if its that close to the warehouse.

I'm cool call Amazon they gave credit for that 2-day Shipping, so it's FREE Shipping! I'm going build up credit to buy Aperture 3 which it have to be real soon it may be announce with Canon camera announcement as a guess. Apple and Canon work well together. :D

I called yesterday and was assured it would ship to arrive today even though my order said not yet shipped. I did not receive it today. Just called tonight and was again told it was prepared for shipment and it may arrive on Saturday. I expressed my disappointment at having ordered over a month ago and not receiving it today. He offered me a $25 coupon toward a purchase. I told him that was great and was plannning to buy an iPod touch soon. He upped it to $45 toward a $300 purchase. I know what I'm buying on sept 9.

Cool! I got Amazon to credit my $8.98 for my 2-Day Shipping and they ended up shipping UPS Ground where I get it on Sept 1. I'm good just no more launches or just released products. I rather deal with Apple. :D

What's the point of this 10 base counting? I'm see more space but its not really?
