Well, I see that no one has reported anything really bad with SL, so this is the weekend! I'm going to do it! Wish me luck! :p

Decided im sticking with my limited edition alu macbook lol. As for less battery life under snow leopard i think it has dropped but as i mainly use the laptop plugged in its not a massive deal for me. Plus i expect the updates to remedy this.

Well I'm glad you told me that. I recently got a refurb uMB and it shipped with SL. After I installed it, I assumed that 2 hours of battery life was typical with uMB.

It's gotta be something other than SL. Since it's refurbished, maybe you need a new battery.
I installed SL and saw NO DECREASE in battery life. It does just as well as Leopard did, between 4-5 with bluetooth off, Wireless ON, and brightness under 50%.
If I were you, I would try to Calibrate my battery and then if you see no improvements, call AppleCare or take it in to a store. That's not normal...

Holy batcave! That's a lot of battery power you folks lost!!!!!

So score is:

battery life lost: 3
no battery life loss: 1

Sounds like waiting a month or so is highly recommended.

Hey All,

I'm thinking of joining the Classic MB Club! Over the last 3 months I've had 4 MBPs, all suffered from freezing and beachballs, I'm convinced it was caused by the 1.7 EFi update.

Anyway, I'm staying well clear of the new MBP line and I'm considering a refurb uMB.

Just have a few questions:

1 - Are the main differences between the uMB and the new MBPs; longer battery, FW800 port, SD slot and deeper colours? Or am I missing something crucial?

2 - Does replacing the RAM and HDD void the warranty? I know it doesn't with the new MBPs, just wanted to double check on here befoer I splash out on a Crucial 256GB SSD.

3 - Can you buy spare batteries for the uMB?

4 - Is the build the same as the MBP?

Thanks in advance.

1. AFAIK, those are the differences. I'm not sure about "deeper colours" though.

2. No.

3. Yes, bought mine at the Apple Store on Regent Street. :D

4. Yes, except we have infinitely expandable battery capacity. ;)

been running snow leopard for a little over 24 hours.

So far a lot of stuff isn't working. Not one of the 9 screen savers I downloaded work any more, neither did iStat Menus (had to download update).

Also, apps in general tend to be lagging and everything seems to be running just a tiny bit slower. (I am on 10.6.1)

Not too impressed with SL at the moment.

Didn't think it could get any better...

But I just installed SL and it definitely is loading apps much faster. Everything is working nicely on my Alum and iMac so far. Can't see any negatives at all so far. I'll check out the battery life tomorrow and see if it kills mine too, but so far, I don't have one complaint. The whole process was quick and painless and I recovered plenty of space on the HD.

Didn't think it could get any better, but it did.

Just wanted to chime in real quick here.

I have a unibody MacBook running Snow Leopard since launch day.

I have one problem. When I'm using my external display with a mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (monoprice), if I sleep the system and try to wake it up, the system goes back to sleep immediately then wakes up again. Then the menubar is solid and occasionally Finder icons will disappear. It happens if I sleep the system using the external display, or sleep the system using the built-in display then switching to the external display. The only way it works right is if I wake the system by opening the lid and having two displays going. So I generally can't use sleep mode if I want to use my external display. I have to reboot or just shut the system down before connecting it. This all worked fine in Leopard by the way. Its definitely a bug in Snow Leopard related to Apple's piss poor handling of multiple displays. For some reason, Apple won't allow you to disable the built-in display via software, like Windows has been able to do for over 11 years now.

Otherwise, I did a CLEAN install of Snow Leopard and I've had zero problems.

Other than that bug, I can guarantee you that nearly every other problem people experience with Snow Leopard is due to an UPGRADE rather than a CLEAN INSTALL.

OP, you'll be fine going to Snow Leopard as long as you do the SMART thing and do a fresh clean install. Not an upgrade like everyone else. Snow Leopard is sold as a "$29 upgrade", but the disc is a full disc and you can do a clean install of the OS. You just have to go into Disk Utility in the installer and wipe the drive there, then install Snow Leopard.

I would bet good money that if everyone did a clean install of Snow Leopard rather than an upgrade, we wouldn't be seeing 90% of the complaints we are seeing.

Oh yeah, no drop in battery life either. ~5 hours for me still, wifi on, bluetooth off, screen between 25-50% brightness.

Crazy problem... Since upgrading to SL (clean install) whenever i wake my MB from sleep, i keep having applications quit left and right. Sometimes it's Safari (almost every time), Entourage, iTunes... Anybody else have this?
It's driving me nuts!!

So generally what are the bootup times for a unibody macbook?

I am asking because mine is taking about 50s to bootup with 90GB used up

My Unibody boots up in about 30 seconds with 10.5.8 and around 35 GB's used. Try a PRAM Reset, Reset Permissions and Repair Disk if you want to try and improve boot up time.

some more problems with Snow Leopard on my uMB.

Seashore (image editor) quits whenever you open an image already on your desktop into seashore. My battery life is also much lower. (from around 2 - 3 hours before (depending on settings) to about 1 hour 15 minutes on dimmest screen etc.)
