I think the brick might be a new product that is a combined Apple TV/Time Capsule in 500GB/1TB but with OSX or at least expanded features such as a browser and the ability to use wireless keyboards etc. Maybe even an optical drive, perhaps making it the replacement for the mini.

As far as the 'Brick' terminology is concerned, the first thought that came to mind - Gateway One's 'Power I/O Bar':

Additionally, I am fairly surprised that no one has posted the following image (courtesy of 9to5mac):

While I posted this for discussion, I'll give you my reasons as to why I believe this specific image is fake:
  • Hot News Headline is missing
  • These fabled MacBooks will likely make their debut at an event of some sort, which in-turn makes the second radio button for the "September Let's Rock Event" a misplaced oddity
  • I believe I see Photoshop running in the OS-X dock...

Perhaps this is something; perhaps it's not, but to say the least I'd be fairly disappointed in an 'I/O Brick' addition to the MacBook line-up.

Ah, let the speculation begin...

My guess would be that the Macbook wont need the 'brick' power supply any more.

I've noticed more and more devices coming with smaller transformers. The one for my nokia E71 is tiny for example, about 3/4 the size of a 9volt battery.

However i'd hope it would be something more like a MacMini replacement with interchangable MXM graphics

I hope it's a new, aluminum power supply. If Apple has some sense they'll make a universal one for all 3 laptop models. Saves costs and inventory. And if you happen to own a MB and a MBP, saves confusion too.

Modular

Like others my initial reaction is that it will be expandable and modular like the old pismo. One bay or even 2 (mbp maybe) can be swapped out for another hard drive, battery or optical drive. Just like the old pismo. Or maybe it hints at a dock type thing so essentially when disconnected it is more of a netbook. Brick means building to me. I don't want to fuel the redesigned power brick idea simply because it isn't exciting enough.
I like the fat G5 powerbook i'm hoping for a maxed out chunky 17" mbp.

i dont belive that the macbook or the new ibrick-book will be released on 14th oct!!!

Its 23rd sep and they yet not announced it or sent invitations regarding the new macbooks.

So how can it be released on 14th oct??

Because invites are sent out the week before

I havn't read all the replies to this rumor, so I don't know if I repeat something others have allready said. But isn't it possible that this "brick" reference is symbolic for "clay"? The current Macbooks are made out of plastic, so Appe COULD use their patent for syrconium/ceramics (I think it's spelled like that...I'm not American nor British) for the Macbooks instead of the iPhone that was previously speculated about?! Well that's my 2cents that I can see has made a big amount already if everybody has given two cents... ;)

Obviously a brick is a primary building block. So how about:

Perhaps the PCB is designed so that sections & components can be connected together to form all the various models?? i.e. Clip-on a rubbish GPU PCB for MacBook or a good one for a MacBook Pro. This way they only need one main board across MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacMini, iMac?? Makes updates very easy because you wouldn't be retooling for the whole PCB, just the new part.

Perhaps the Brick is supposed to be really solid and stable??

Perhaps (most likely in my opinion) the brick is the building block for a whole range of other variants?? Think MacBook Touch -- same internals, different case & bolt-on features?

Please let it be made out of aluminium with a release date before the 31 of October!
Back to school with a new MacBook and a new iPod Touch both for my girlfriend would be great :D

That explanation ties in nicely with what Apple said at the last analyst meeting regarding a new product transition and that it would be a product that competitors would not be able to match for the price.

As in the competitors wouldn't be able to get away with selling it at such an inflated price?

(aw common, someone had to say it)

Add to that if it were a Macbook the term "lighter than Air" would insunate that the Macbook are lighter than the Macbook Airs which can't be the case.

With a recent recall of iPhone power supplies and an over-all almost anti-ruggedness of Apple's chargers/supplies, you want them to make the case of aluminium, ultimately upping the risk of electric shock?

Three of the MBPs/PBs I've had "tickled", and you want a metal 220V/110V power brick? :(

Beautiful Red Intel Computer Killer ?

That's not an anagram. An anagram is where the same letters are used, only rearranged.

It also says make the cables disappear. If they took out all the connection ports and associated hardware, and made the casing from a plastic, why wouldn't it be lighter?

Hmmm...dont know.

Ever heard the term to "brick something" - i.e, your digital camera.
No one likes that.

Bricks are big and heavy...and quite large where I live - bigger than face bricks americans are used to seeing.

So this tells us that it will be a heavy, large object that will "brick" (break) easily. lol

I dont know, guess we will see. :)

Peace

*legit info ahead*

the new macbook wont come with a power supply. Just a cable. The power "brick" won't be there anymore.

Yeah, several others have speculated the same thing. That's the most logical explanation. Personally, I don't really care about the size of the power supply. I mean, it's only slightly larger than a deck of cards. I know some people would truly appreciate it but I'd rather see something else. The modular computing ideas are interesting but I'm not sure if that fits with any MacBook.

It wouldn't be lighter because of PR.

Imagine the macbook (cheap) being lighter than the expensive MacBook Air whose purpose is being light. Basically undermining the point of the MBA, then try and sell the MBA for £250 more then the top end MB.

I can see getting rid of the optical drive but getting rid of USB, Mini DVI, headphone port would (I believe) destroy the student market for the Macbook. If you keep those available ports then what are you left with, the MBA.

Also note the url of the website ends with MacBook and note that the apple urls on their site are lower case.
