It wouldn't be lighter because of PR.

Imagine the macbook (cheap) being lighter than the expensive MacBook Air whose purpose is being light. Basically undermining the point of the MBA, then try and sell the MBA for £250 more then the top end MB.

I can see getting rid of the optical drive but getting rid of USB, Mini DVI, headphone port would (I believe) destroy the student market for the Macbook. If you keep those available ports then what are you left with, the MBA.

Also note the url of the website ends with MacBook and note that the apple urls on their site are lower case.

I was working on the assumption (valid or otherwise) that this was real, although since Samsung have already used the tagline I doubt it: http://www.samsung.com/global/experience/ifa2008/ifapress/html/popup_notepc01.html. If it were I'm sure that Apple would find a way to make the MBA more desirable, or there is the possibility that the MBA will be scrapped and this will make the line wholly consumer orientated.

Hey it's interesting how we take a totally off-the-wall label like "Brick" and start wondering whether it could possibly predict the thing we want Apple to produce next.

This happened to me with this link:

Okay - so the rumour is a tiny wireless usb brick that has the monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, external hard disk, whatever plugged into it. That way the MacBook Air can be placed on your desk and you get a much bigger experience.

Interesting.

Take it a step further - if you've got any Mac on your network, use the Brick (+ monitor + keyboard + mouse) for a full remote terminal to your Mac. 5 bricks around the house for 5 virtual Macs (cheap!).

Of course... if Apple wants to allow a low power terminal then I think it's more likely to look like a REALLY THIN iMac (with no CPU).

God if apple makes a big deal about something like that I'm going to kill myself.

They could manage something amazing spec wise, but they would spend 20 minutes talking about how much smaller they made the power brick or how awesome a USB hub is.

Something modular? Bricks are things that connect together to form some kind of composite.

That is actually a great idea.

I could see it as an ultra-portable with power. The new "brick" would require a docking station to complete the functionality.

As a separate entity I feel the brick as described above would be a very cool tool.

i hate the brick attached to my power cord

Would you prefer for that bulk to be inside your laptop?

That gave me an idea. Maybe, if we have the power cord inside the computer, so we can wind it out.. :p :apple::apple::apple:

am i the only one who noticed the "the brick", is the products code name, it'll probably be called something else when it comes out

I haven't read all the posts, but whatever The Brick is, I'm prepared to be disappointed. I've decided that it's much healthier to keep my expectations low and then be pleasantly surprised if Apple manages to exceed them, which hasn't happened in a while.

So why are you here?

brick as in brick through windows

it will be a touch up grade for every line with new compatible software
-iTablet
-MB/MBP with secondary touch screens rather then keyboards and mouse pad,
it will revolutionize the user experience
A USB powered touch screen that doubles as a mouse and key board
for the iMac and mac pro

it will be so good Microsoft will be destroyed by this one
tons of market share, tons

I'm thinking netbook here. They certainly look like bricks, and it would explain the circulated "aggressive price point". On the other end they might unify the MB and MBP line. That would explain the aluminum 13'' rumors.

No more "Pro" in the name. Just simply "MacBook" for all the Mac laptops.
That would be nice.

That would most likely mean that you'd only have three Apple laptops to choose from. I'm not sure I'd like that, considering their recent focus on the lowest common denominator consumer.

I really like this simple image from tuaw:

the brick is

....a module that fits in the touchpad area - you can also plug an ipod touch or an iphone in there, and use it as a touchpad with the added benefit of not having to futz with the charge cable, offering easy synchronization of libraries and a more finger-friendly surface than traditional touchpads, as well as an added visual interface to the OS.

As it comes from the store, the machine has a basic (removable) touchpad with ample space underneath to store drugs.

The iPhone and iPod touch would be terrible as touch pad. The smooth glass feels sticky when you drag your finger on it. It's great for tapping but terrible for dragging. There's a reason why trackpads have a rough surface, only they get smooth and sticky after lots of use. Glass trackpad makes sense: rough glass doesn't get polished by your fingers that fast. It should laast a few years.

Yes, I would, in fact.

That would push the weight up to 2.54kg add to that the bulk needed to add the hardware would mean less space for internal components such as battery (less battery life) or optical drive or just a larger heavier computer in general.

Personal I like having them separate as if I want to go to the park/libary to do work then I can do so without having to carry the weight of the charger. I can take it if I want rather than being forced to take it.

Of course they could possible shrink it ala the old iPod chargers > the iPhone charger so the added weight/size wouldn't be as much as the current charger now.

However you will still need to carry around a plug/socket adapter to plug into the computer and the wall. Therefore you would still need to carry around a separate cable/adapter so the benefits of having inside the computer are nil as far as I can see.
