*steve jobs walks onstage*

it's a revolutionary new technology. we've taken the wildly successful concept of iphone and reinvented it! today i introduce the iBrick. a gorgeous 3.5 inch multitouch display...accelerometer...etc...etc. and best of all, it's got a huge lithium ion battery in the back. 60 hours of talk time, 300 hours of music, 40 hours of video.

*pulls ibrick out of modified jeans so it would still fit in that little hip pocket*

*crowd goes wild*

299 for the 8gb, 399 for the 16gb. we think we're gonna sell a lot of 'em.

and STILL no copy and paste. just my speculation.

apple is gonna hype this up soo hard, once the day comes, they are gonna "brick roll" everybody, and when that happens i will point and laugh. lol

again, just like the lets rock event, it is US doing the hyping. Apple lets one word out and us on the internet just go nuts, then wonder why apple hasnt delivered the wirelessly powered 32gb RAM 30ghz MBA that also folds your laundry.

It is us that sets ourselves up for dissapointment, not apple.

Apple never made any hardware before.

Woah there, 75% of the computers I own were wholly made in the US. IBM still plays by the same old rules for their government jobs. We can still do it all ourselves, but its more a niche environment now. We still maintain the capability to do every bit of production here in the US. But Apple's use of Chinese labor is just plain cheaper. But I still miss the quality of the keyboards from the 80's

Folds your laundry...

I want one of those!

Apple?

Technically IBM has been out of the business computer industry for quite awhile. That was sold off to Lenovo. Because of this, you won't be seeing Lenovo laptops being bought by the Government, because of its overwhelming Chinese control/influence.

I mean hardware, as in the components of the products Apple sells. Apple doesn't manufacture Wifi/radio chips or LCD panels or accelerometers. The poster I was replying to was saying that it is better to have all components from the same source which isn't necessarily true.

*legit info ahead*

the new macbook wont come with a power supply. Just a cable. The power "brick" won't be there anymore.

Actually quite the opposite . One of the key design features of Apple's smaller / slimmer products such as the mac mini are due to being able to take the bulk power source (which is also a huge heat source) out of the main device. It's a pretty cool design trick actually.

Ever see the power brick for the mac mini? it's fraackin huge! and heavy .

As opposed to your traditional PC tower where the main power block is inside the beige box.

And maybe we're suggesting we'd prefer a thicker computer with the power supply built in. ;)

My guess would be that the Macbook wont need the 'brick' power supply any more.

I've noticed more and more devices coming with smaller transformers. The one for my nokia E71 is tiny for example, about 3/4 the size of a 9volt battery.

However i'd hope it would be something more like a MacMini replacement with interchangable MXM graphics

i think your spot on! when the TV (or Time Capsule?) was released Jobs referred to it as having a internal power supply and no "brick" to add to the collection.

The MacBook may come with an iPhone like wall connector but with no USB port.

none of the rumours make much sense

I really think that is wayyyy over reaching/thinking on macenstiens part.
Yeah. Since when has Apple ever used tricky metaphorical code names like that? They haven't that's when.

People are also being stupid in thinking that a rumour about a product with a code name of "the brick" is really about a product *without* a brick (power adapter). If that was true, then why is there a rumour about a product with the code name of "the brick?" That's like saying there is a new rumour about a car with the code name of "lightning bolt" that's actually about a car that's so slow that "lightning bolt" is an ironic joke. Which is about as likely as the "brick through a window" thing above.

The rumour with the most legs IMO is the one about the brick being a wireless USB port, or in some circumstances, wireless optical drive, and again power brick. But in my house at least this would be an awful idea. Power bricks mostly live in the dust on the floor with several magazines and books on top. Putting an optical drive, or even ports for that matter on the floor, well it's just stupid. The floor is the worst place for that stuff.

If it's some kind of wireless hub that sits on a table or next to the router, then it kind of makes sense, but how is that any different from a Mac Mini that shares it's optical drive? Or a printer or scanner that does the same? And all the other USB thingamabobs that you might want to plug into such a device are peripherals like mice and keyboards. How does that help to have them attached to the brick in the other room by the router? They already have a USB port on the Time Capsule, why not just make a Time Capsule with extra USB ports if that is their aim?

Apple pretty much *has* to come out with a small form factor tablet or micro laptop of some kind pretty soon and all signs point to that, so I am still going to go with the tablet which would be the same size as a standard brick (if not as thick as a brick.)

At my University this September, all the new rich kids showed up with their gear and this is traditionally a good indicator of what's "hot" because who knows better than University kids, and who has more money than the rich parents that can afford to send them there? This year, while there were a lot more Mac laptops than before, the single most popular new device that almost every kid has, ... is some kind of netbook or micro laptop. Those little Sony Vaios and all their imitators are also hugely popular.

If Apple doesn't produce something like the old 12" powerbook, (or some kind of revolutionary multi-touch tablet) to answer these things they might be out of luck soon. Sure it could be just a fad, and next year or two they all disappear and we go back to the "big" laptops, but I don't think so personally.

Exactly. This kills any speculation about a vanishing power brick for the MacBook. THAT'S WAY TOO HOT!! I'll get so pissed off if I hear about a vanishing power brick again. Read first before you post!

Maybe the brick is the battery?

I sure hope its more than a cord.:)

I've read most of the replies in this thread and I've really taken the time to consider all possibilities and their effects on the market and Apples financial sector. This is what I've come up with, THESE COINCIDE WITH APPLES "AGRESSIVE PRICING" CLAIM:

1. Mac Mini knocked down to $399, specs remain close to current.
2. The "Brick" is a mid-range tower, or system for building a tower, with specs close to that of a high-end consumer PC, or gaming PC. It can be added onto, modified, and upgraded like the Mac Pro. The highest processor available being a Quad Core.
3. "Brick" starts at around $700.
4. MacBooks start at $700.

Reading your post got me to thinking. I've just had a vision!! I've got it!!!!!

The brick could be a module that is removable from the MacBook itself. Instead of putting the laptop into a dock, you dock the brick into the laptop! This way, you can bring all that extra stuff (optical, usb ports, what have you) if you so desire, but you can also eject the brick and have a much lighter laptop!

Whaddya think??? Have I figured it out or what? :D

I am willing to bet money on the brick is some sort of bottom peice to the Apple Notebooks. Sort of like a dock but not.

A Brick.... Picture a Lego... stackable.

Immigane if Apple laptops were all as thin as the Air but with the Ability to add a bottom peice, to make the whole laptop bigger. The Bottom peice could house another HDD, Say, a 320GB 2.5" traditional Hard drive, a good graphics card, Alot of Ports, Blu-Ray etc...

And the thin computer by itself could be like integrated graphics, solid state hard drive, no optical drive etc.... that way you could have thin light notebook or a big desktop replacement or w/e.

I think this would be a great idea...

Count me in for one of each!

pwned

I'd like to see the music video for this. :D

i was guessing the power brick will be integrated into the wall plug like the iPhone's. this would be awesome as you wouldnt have to lug around a brick on your laptop bag.

i didnt say anything about the cord except it wont have a USB port at the back of the plug (obviously).
