I joined the forum just to say this and you beat me to it. If the "Window breaker" analogy is to be followed, in my opinion, this is the ONLY thing they could do: release OS X for all PCs (32 and 64bit). It's probably the best way to sweep in on the wide market share left by people's disenchantment with Vista. Add an easy way to transfer docs and settings, and you're all set.

Then do not follow the Window breaker analogy. There's no way they're doing it, unless they completely give up on making computers.

Nothing to do with brick

My bet is that 9to5mac is completely wrong again!

The rumor starts out by saying how 9to5mac caught the keyword "rainbow" before the nano release. The only thing is, Apple never used the word rainbow, in fact they avoided it like the plague, noting that pink, black, and silver are not colors of the rainbow.

So now 9to5mac are keying on the word "Brick". Apple may not be using the word brick at all in describing the new MacBook. My bet is 9to5mac is incorrect once again. I just doubt Apple would use a term like "Brick" that is usually associated with big, bulky, heavy in the portable laptop world.

Where is that Kevin Rose when you need him?

There's nothing to this story. Brick is another decoy code name put out by Apple to catch leaks.

This has nothing to do with Macbook or a new portable device. You can put a brick in your pocket but it buldges too much and sharp edges protrude the skin.

This has nothing to do with mac mini , as it already has a hefty power brick and the shape of the mac mini itself has to stay relatively square because a DVD drive requires a space that is as long as it is wide.

Big IF's:
- This might have something to do with redesign of current power supply . And current power supply devices already look like bricks so I don't see how so.
- This has something to do with a new creative way of stacking servers or stacking hard drives, kind of like bricks stack to build houses.
- This has something to do with solid state memory as bricks are also solid

or this is not even hardware related at all. this is a software feature of new macbooks or 10.6 .

"In 10.5 we brought you spaces, now in 10.6 we are proud to introduce bricks!"

Red Baron

Introducing OS X as a software load for all PC's would really be an industry changing event. The mock-up of the brick may be incorrect, I was told it will be half the size of the Mini and very quiet.

Your logic makes so much sense. ;)

I agree.

Is this the "industry expert" you spoke with? This was published several days ago and is nothing but, as the article indicates, mere speculation.

Do you know how many third-party drivers Apple would have to support for OS X to run on all PCs? 100% guarantee that this will not happen. Apple makes its margins on hardware, not software; at present they are fighting to keep OS X off of generic PCs, not to make it easier to run it on them.

Last i heard hes in the basement at 1 Infinate loop standing in a kiddie pool with his nipples attatched to a car battery :(

His Steveness was not pleased with Rose's loose toungue :p

I believe that Apple is going to integrate the power adapter into Macbook/Macbook Pro itself.

One cable to connect Macbook to the power socket, no adapter (a.k.a brick)

I honestly don't think it's going to be wireless USB. There is just not enough support for it yet.

Hahah. Did he really get in trouble for it? I haven't heard anything...

I dont see this happening, I think it would run WAY too hot for the components inside the rest of the computer and would result in a horrific % of failures.

Well, I agree with you, but Apple might have invented a feasible power adapter, which is also light, that could be integrated inside the laptop. This would be a revolutionary thing (very Apple-ish)

I know that it's not comparable, but look how small the power adapter for the iPhone got in couple of years...

I say, why not?

Exactly what I said as well somewhere in this forum. I think 9to5mac isn't getting accurate information anymore, plain and simple. "Rainbow-colored" leak must've annoyed someone at Apple. I mean this is not the case of some photos or others from Asian factory, he says he knows it from Apple employees.

There's no way they wouldn't patent something like this, and we would've heard about it if they did.

A couple of thoughts

It's been touched on slightly but I think there could be some truth to the wireless hub concept that has been disussed, however I would offer some tweaks. This "brick" will be an opportunity to move many of the bulky pieces currently in the MacBook (or Pro) to a remote/desktop location would allow for huge space/weight reduction, could increase the storage capacity/performace of the head laptop unit, and would fit with Apple's commitment to simplicity/eliminating wires.

Move the optical drive (to utilize Apple's Remote Disk), a larger harddrive, usb/ethernet/firewire/video connections and a beefed up processor, leaving a slimmed town laptop with the ability to operate either standalone (as a netbook with ssd harddrive) or in tandem with a "brick" as a wireless head unit. This would mean that you could be running your OS on your "brick" and viewing and interacting with it on your screen at your desk (plugged into the brick), on your laptop on the couch, on your iphone, or on your TV with your Apple TV... and we all know how Apple likes integration.

If your sold on the BRICK as an acronym idea... I'm not sure on the B, C, and K, but the RI could very well be Resolution Independence.

Or maybe, as previous posters have suggested it is "B-R-C-K"... which would be Barack with out the vowels, suggesting that Obama will be on hand.

At the end of the day, we'll probably get all hyped up and it will be a "one more thing" with Ben Folds Five being added to the iTunes library (I know, they're already on there).

I really dont like the idea of Apple taking away from the macbook. As much as I believe optical is quickly going to become a dying media, i still want/need a dvd drive (non bluray preferable, and god please let it burn dvd standard). I really dont like the idea of my only computer (i just want to use a laptop all the time) becoming a netbook the second im out of range.

No one has heard anything from kevin...... no doubt that apples basement/dungeon is soundproofed.

From what ive heard hes lost a few sources because apples been supremely pissed off.

I like the 'window breaker' allusion. It sounds like the kind of codename Apple would come up with. It's also a good time for such a move - Vista is a failure, and people are more open to switch than ever before. There also seems to be a cultural shift towards demanding quality.

If it were, I'd guess at either:

- Cheaper MacBook
- Apple Netbook

I don't think a Netbook would just be added to the product line, though. It would give Apple 4 laptops, which is too confusing (it's not the 90s any more). Either Apple would retire the MacBook in favour of a cheaper MBA, or replace the MBA. Both are hot products, so Apple would need to be sure the new product is a success before doing it.

A MacBook price drop is the most conservative, but since when have Apple been afraid of change?

Perhaps they are partially right (the OS X on a PC crowd). Perhaps this is an expansion on the recent news allowing Leopard Server to run under VMWare. Perhaps Apple is allowing standard OS X (not just Server) to run under any VMWare environment (with any host OS). This would NOT cause a driver nightmare for them because of the Virtualization layer. And it would also allow them to run on pretty much any hardware.

To take the "brick" analogy one step further...perhaps they are announcing an external hard drive with an "OS X" VM pre-installed. Plug it into your PC (via USB), if you have VMWare installed, you can launch it immediately...otherwise, it will prompt to install the free VMWare player.

1400!

I nominate the Powerbook 1400 as the all-time "Brick".

(the Mac Portable is the "Cinder Block")

I do have to say thats beautiful.

BUT, if a mini takes precedence over the laptop line, THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY

Don't worry, it won't. Apple said so two years ago that laptops are where it's at and where it will remain for the majority.

BRIC - Brazil, Russia, India, China. Four important emerging markets. We're going to be seeing a significantly lower new price point!
BRICK - Brazil, Russia, India, China, Kazakhstan.

Not to get political here, but the I could also stand for Iraq or Iran. The C could also stand for the Cameroonian nations (west Africa), Cambodia, Congo, etc.

The K is really freaking hard to get a country that stands for it that actually fits!

R is definitely Russia.

B could stand for Brazil, but it could also stand for Bora Bora, etc.

If the lighter than air ad is a red herring, you might be right. I certainly suggested that a "Mac on a Stick" concept might come to light a while back but at the same time I doubt it - any licensing of the OS is likely to bog Apple down and slow down their innovation. Apple has wasted a lot of time getting Safari and iTunes to play nice on Windows, and to have a load of cheapskates with their USB sticks making demands on them, just doesn't seem that appealing. Apple has a great product range and the money is rolling in. It would be a mistake to let greed get the better of them now. Best that they focus on Snow Leopard and making all that they already have the best and most stable it can be. Although it would be nice we don't need yet more radical change, because with radical change comes more stuff to be put right and ironed out.

And then the iphone was born......

Hopefully laptops and the Mac pro remain the bread and butter of their computer lines and take precedence. Though i do beleive the Mac Pro is last on the list of what needs an upgrade.
