At first the split seemed a little odd, but after a few days it has grown on me. Now I am wondering why the iMac/eMac and Mini are still grouped...

Very happy for the split. Was wondering, since I joined earlier this month, why they are together. This will ease confusion when people ask questions about a machine and half the posters answer the question as if it was the other machine. The split was very much needed.

Dang...

I just realized that I'm in two separate MB forums! I gonna' have to dust the cobwebs off of my PowerBook 5300c/100 and get it up and running. I'm such a bonehead, for voting for "separate forums." Hey ARN, can I cancel my vote and re-vote??? LOL

While you're at it, why not split everything up into it's own forum, kind of like the way Discussions.apple.com
has theirs set up.

I know there aren't that many PPC portable users posting compared to the MB/MBP/A but it is kinda hard to find those posts.

Just separate everything :D

I prefer just one forum for both laptops.

Makes more sense and more convenient to help people - skimming through issues regarding the MacBook can often be helped by MacBook Pro users. I agree with having a separate forum for the MacBook Air as it is a different genre of laptop.

How about making each page of the forum hold more posts so you can scroll through them quicker rather than having to go to page 2?

I agree with this. It seems no one in the macbook section can answer my question so I'm going to ask about it on the macbook pro section. I hope this doesnt bother anyone to much.

I have a MacBook but am always considering a Pro, so I liked having the different posts together. I didn't mind shifting through to find relevent MB stuff, and often took a look at interesting Pro posts.

John B.

Absolutely agree. Keep them together.. keep 'Air' seperate.

I blame 'Air' for causing this rift between the portable owners :(

TWO!!! I DON'T DESERVE TO HEAR ABOUT THOSE RICHY RICH PEOPLE PLAYING GUITAR HERO ON THEIR LAPTOPS EVERY TIME I NEED HELP WITH MY MACBOOK. :p

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/444336/

now i have to post questions in both forums to get the best help, because i dont know maybe a MBP user cant help me maybe a macbook user can, but he wont see my question because he is reading the macbook forums...so i think they should be together

i mean come on we already have 50 forums and subforums...yes i counted them

I think for the time being while everything is being updated we should have separate forums to ease the amount of posts in each group (when there was only one notebook forum it would sometimes take 10 minutes for a post to go from the top to the bottom of a page). Once things settle down a bit (like say 200-300 people reading the notebook forum at one time) then I think we should combine them all over again and make it a big happy family once more.

Until they're all updated next, right?

i think you just quoted my exact suggestion i sent Arn in a pm:p

No, just until the barage of questions from new macbook and macbook pro owners are answered and people start to get settled with their machines. I don't think it will take more than a few weeks for things to settle down dramatically. The Mac OS X forum is a perfect example of this - when leopard came out it was crazy (to put it lightly), but now it's totally under control and ready to be one big happy family again.

A poll to see if people think the MacBook and MacBook Pro forums should be seperate or together.

I think there should be separate forums. I don't want to have to sort through MacBook posts when looking for MacBook Pro posts.

You might have read me wrong - I meant once all these models get a refresh(at Montevina or whenever), all the activity will flare up again. No point merging/separating all the while!

Yes, I did read that wrong, your point makes much more sense now.

I think the problem (if you want to call it a problem) is that there are so many switchers and newbies to mac. I think apple is selling machines like hotcakes and this is the best resource for people to find the answers to their questions. Unless the forum somehow evolves to accommodate the increased traffic we will keep running into this problem.

Here are some possible solutions to the increased traffic:

1. Make the amount of posts per page longer so they don't get swept under the rug to page 2 so quickly, and people will be less likely to repost the same question as it may still be on page 1.

2. Find some way to keep people from re-posting on topics that have been talked about so much it's annoying (I can think of so many off the top of my head but matte vs. glossy is a great example).

3. Decrease the incentive to post a ton of new worthless posts. By this I mean change the naming hierarchy (newbie, member, regular, 6502, etc.) so that people don't feel the need to post useless one word replies to posts or create more useless threads. One way to do this would be to allow everyone to have an avatar or no one have an avatar (unless they contribute or something). The way it is now just begs for people to multi-post for the sole purpose of increasing their post count. There are other ways to do this that have been discussed among the administrators I'm sure, but if you have a hierarchy, the natural desire is for people to want to climb up in it and because of that we get a lot of useless posts and threads.

4. More strict rules against useless newbie prediction posts that seem to take up sometimes half the forum

That's all I can think of right now as it's late here on the east coast but I'll update with more if I think of them. Please add your own!

its already pretty long compared to some other forums

they did, theres a check to see if previously posted button next to the subject box...dosent help

so who knows

Please, constructive criticism... add solutions with criticism, not just criticism alone. Lets try to get some ideas going here and then maybe we'll get some solutions. I was aware of those points you made but we've got to do something and I was trying to point us in the right direction.

Further divisions to keep us all together ...

Why isn't there a separate PC hardware forum?

I want to start a thread concerning the Sony Vaio TZ (the 11.1" laptop). It has nothing to do with any of the Apple laptops so which forum should I put it in? I was thinking of the MacBook Air forum cos they're both ultraportables (well the MBA may be stretching the definition a bit) or maybe the "Buying Tips, Advice and Discussion" forum?

On a sidenote I agree with what people have said regarding aggregating the three Apple laptop forums under the current "Notebook" link. I always check all three anyway but it'd be nice to have the option to view them all at once if desired.

P.S. I want dedicated forums for the Amiga, Spectrum and Commodore C64 and Jesus Christ Arn, I want them NOW goddamnit! :D

P.S.2 Does Arn ever read of any these posts or even get his mods to do so? Or are we all just wasting our time writing here ... ?

Because this is a Mac forum. We deal with Mac's, not PC's. Why would you want advice comparing a Sony laptop running Windows to an Apple laptop running Mac OS X? The OS are completely different. It just turns into PC v Mac debates.

If you want advice on a PC or having problems with it, go to a PC forum.

Erm, since when did I say I wanted to compare a Sony laptop to a Apple laptop? I didn't even tell you what the details of the thread were gonna be apart from the fact it related to the Sony laptop. Yet you seemed to jump to conclusions pretty quickly.

We deal with Mac's, not PC's.

Really? You could've fooled me with all the PC related software and hardware questions and discussions that seem to happily exist and have existed in the Mac Rumors universe. Which Apple fanboy version of the Mac Rumors website are you looking at?

Here's just a taster of some of the non-Mac forums you must've missed over the years:

  • DailyTunes Song Discussion
  • Console Games
  • Music Discussion
  • Design and Graphics
  • Politics, Religion, Social Issues
  • Current Events
  • Web Design and Development

Just take a look at the last forum I mentioned; most of the threads are not Mac specific at all (PHP, HTML, XHTML, Flash, Javascript etc).

If you want advice on a PC or having problems with it, go to a PC forum.

Well thanks to your response I may just leave Mac Rumors altogether. I suppose I had a good run of 6 months, I took part in some good and fun discussions and got many questions (Mac and non-Mac related) answered. Most importantly of all I enjoyed the warm and welcoming nature of the members but alas it looks like the tides, they are a changin' ...

Definitely split them apart for the simple fact that the MacBook Air got its own forum while us elitist, hard working, high earning MacBook Pro owners had to sweat it out with the cheap ass proles that make up the MacBook demographic. Yuck! :D

On the other hand if you take into account current political events with the whole Kosovo split and its potential reverberations, how long before the Mac Mini forum wants to be independent of the iMac forum? Or what about Mac Rumors Page 2 splitting into an autonomous entity from Page 1? Could this be the warning bell for the breaking apart of the whole Mac Rumors site ...

I concur with Neutral Gamer: Excellent comparative analysis!

That's Just not fair! just because some of us aren't old enough to have a job and be able to afford a MBP doesn't mean we're cheap or not hard working! I try very hard to save up the money I get, but seeing as I can't get a job, it takes me a while to get the 1500+ dollars for a mbp! and please don't say "maybe you shouldn't get one if you're so young!", becuase even though I'm young, doesn't mean I will only use it for videogames and worthless crap, I am actually trying to learn C++ at the moment and know a fair bit about html and applescript...
