Erm, since when did I say I wanted to compare a Sony laptop to a Apple laptop? I didn't even tell you what the details of the thread were gonna be apart from the fact it related to the Sony laptop. Yet you seemed to jump to conclusions pretty quickly.

Maybe it was the fact that you said you wanted to start a thread concerning the Sony Ultraportable and then went on to say you were considering a MacBook Air, because they are both ultraportables.

Here's just a taster of some of the non-Mac forums you must've missed over the years:

  • DailyTunes Song Discussion
  • Console Games
  • Music Discussion
  • Design and Graphics
  • Politics, Religion, Social Issues
  • Current Events
  • Web Design and Development

Just take a look at the last forum I mentioned; most of the threads are not Mac specific at all (PHP, HTML, XHTML, Flash, Javascript etc).

Those non-Mac forums don't concentrate on PC's do they? And the list of programming languages is universal - they relate to a Mac just as much as they related to a PC.

That has nothing to do with the fact that you suggested we have a separate forum for PC's. Why? This is a Mac forum.

That's Just not fair! just because some of us aren't old enough to have a job and be able to afford a MBP doesn't mean we're cheap or not hard working!

Relax mate, I was being sarcastic! The :D should've given it away.

I try very hard to save up the money I get, but seeing as I can't get a job, it takes me a while to get the 1500+ dollars for a mbp! and please don't say "maybe you shouldn't get one if you're so young!", becuase even though I'm young, doesn't mean I will only use it for videogames and worthless crap, I am actually trying to learn C++ at the moment and know a fair bit about html and applescript...

I admire anyone who works hard and saves up for quality products rather than squanders their limited funds or uses the dreaded credit card to make a purchase they can't afford. You say you're young so I'm impressed to see you already have a sensible idea of savings versus unncessary consumption.

Also, I spend half my programming time in C++ (the other half in C#) so I know that it can be a tricky language to learn at first (especially getting used to pointers) but once you've mastered it and got over some of the syntax (just wait till you start learning about "pointers to member functions") you'll find it an amazingly versatile and efficient language.

Good luck with the C++ and saving up for your first MacBook Pro. :)

Maybe it was the fact that you said you wanted to start a thread concerning the Sony Ultraportable and then went on to say you were considering a MacBook Air, because they are both ultraportables.

I'm afraid you made a bit of a mistake there; if you re-read what I wrote:
I was thinking of the MacBook Air forum cos they're both ultraportables

I never said I was considering buying a MBA only that I should put the thread in that forum as they're both considered ultraportables.

Those non-Mac forums don't concentrate on PC's do they? ... That has nothing to do with the fact that you suggested we have a separate forum for PC's. Why? This is a Mac forum.

The Consoles Games forum concentrates soley on, erm, console gaming, so by your logic why do we need that as well? After all as you've said this is supposed to be a Mac forum right?

Look in all fairness, I don't care. It's Friday, I've nearly finished work and soon my friends and I will be getting the alcohol out and enjoying our weekend. You say on your profile that you like "Mac's, sports, beer" and that you're from "Bonnie Scotland". I also love drinking, football and think Scotland's a great country with some warm hearted people.

Can't we just agree to disagree here? I simply made a suggestion for a PC hardware forum cos I know a lot of Mac owners own PC hardware. If we don't ask we'll never get. We could at least try it to see if it's popular and if not it can just be canned after the trial period.

Look mate, I want to enjoy my weekend and not get into a personal fight, so let's shake *virtual* hands, buy each other *virtual* drinks, call it quits and be on our merry way before the mods ban us from this thread! :)

I like them separated. I think that a general "notebook" section is a good idea for general questions, and the splits for more specific.

As said, can we not have a forum layout like Apple does - two separate forums, but you can view all posts from both forums or go into the specific one?

That way everyone will be kept happy.

Keep them Split the Computers are Quite different and are for different People Professionals VS. Consumers

Not entirely. I'm not a professional and I have a MacBook Pro. Reason I have this over the MacBook is faster CPU, dedicated GPU (for video encoding/games).

My first post to MR, about a month ago, was a query about the relative advantages and disadvantages of PowerBooks and iBooks for a new laptop user. I got some great advice from proponents of both machines, and it was really very helpful to me.

With the forum split, if I were joining today instead of a month ago, where would I post a question like that?

Frankly, and I'm sure everyone will disagree with me, it seems like it would make more sense to split off a different forum for users of laptops that are no longer being made - like the PB and the iBook. Haven't there been treatises written about the ills that can follow from the mixing of different social classes . . . . ? :D

To my shame, I haven't visited MR for ages and was very pleasantly surprised to see the new forum/sub-forum structure.

One reason I like the separate forums is that in the past, quite a few threads descended into a MB vs MBP debate - although sometimes this was useful, it sometimes derailed the thread and hopefully this new structure will help focus discussion.

One thing these forums lack is a hardware forum, as in basic computer stuff that all apple computers have, like harddrive questions that could apply to all the computers.

Having them all together just makes everything less cluttered. Having MacBook and MacBook Pro forums together just makes a ton more threads in one section and makes it harder for a person to find threads that are only relevant to their specific product. I'd say for the most part MacBook Pro users on average are a bit more computer educated as well than regular MacBook users so it means a few less threads of the retarded nature for us MBP users lol :D.

Mac Basics and Help
new to mac, or just need hardware/software help

And to a lesser extent:

Mac Peripherals
displays, isight, airport, printers, speakers etc...

Ok, they're not EXACTLY what you're looking for but they're pretty close. :)
(Still wish there was a general non-Mac hardware thread though, however much some people are against it ....)

There's plenty of large PC related hardware forums out there without needing on on a MAC related site.

The one thing they all lack ...

I fully understand what you're saying but the one thing those PC (and other non-PC hardware) forums don't have are Mac Rumors members. The more I've been using this site the less I've found myself going elsewhere. I've got to know people and it's nice seeing familiar faces in the various forums. It'd be cool to have my thirst for technology disucssion quenced in one place where I already respect many people's contributions and attitudes rather than have to criss cross the internet.

Do you understand what I'm saying?

We've seen a whole range of different forums added over the years (Console Games being one I read quite often) and it would seem like a natural progression to add a general non-Apple technology forum. It doesn't have to be just PC's; there's all sorts of computers and technology out there that I'm sure a lot of Mac Rumors members are interested in and already use. Or a sister site where the members are the same? Okay, it probably won't happen but one can always hope, otherwise it looks like I'll just have to bite the bullet and join up to a site like Engadget rather than having all my eggs in one basket ...

Peace. ;)

Yeah I definitely get what you're saying. I'll have to say though that the expertise of a lot of the members here at macrumors however is probably going to lie more towards MAC hardware rather than the latest PC hardware. I'm sure there are plenty MAC owners here that also have PC's as well or work in an environment where they deal with PC's but once again you'll probably find a lot better support on a primarily PC related site like HardOCP or Anandtech rather than macrumors. It's good to traverse between a few different sites rather than just hanging out on only one because usually you miss a lot of information. A PC forum on macrumors would probably be more like an incite to riot lol.

Hostile reaction

A PC forum on macrumors would probably be more like an incite to riot lol.

Yeah, the sad thing is that you're probably right. The reaction would probably be as hostile as when Steve Jobs announced the partnership with Microsoft back in '97 and that Internet Explorer would be the default browser. I can't get enough of that video especially those boos from the crowd:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxOp5mBY9IY

Best audience reaction parts:
0:49 - Microsoft announced as partner
2:22 - Internet Explorer to be default browser
4:29 - Bill Gates appears through satellite link

Hilarious. :D

I like them split apart. I'm trying to decide between a MB and a MBP so it helps me see the kind of discussion that occurs on each bord.
