Not only should the two be separate, Arn, the notebooks section should probably appear before desktops in the list. Apple is selling more notebooks than desktops, and there's more topics going on in the notebooks sections than there are in the desktops sections. There would be less scrolling to get to the more popular notebooks section. :D

What about a forum for owners of previous generation notebooks? It seems they have been left out of this new forum reorganization.

As owner of PB12 - I do not care.

It's not that one can get sensible advise for 5yo machine here anyway. But then, most sensible place would be dedicated MBP section because few of MB or MBA users ever owned PowerBooks.

The forum should follow apple trends; the movement by apple to use similar cases and merge features (backlit keyboard) shows a blurring of the line between pro and consumer ranges.

As a result, the topics on the subjects will become more merged; more people (including myself) will consider a macbook rather than a macbook pro (or the other direction) and any issues with the laptops are more likely to span the whole range (such as nivida driver issues).

a laptop is about size, my retired mom is more apt to buy a 15" due to screen size where I am more apt to buy a 13" because I use it professionally on location and lugging any more equipment becomes an issue.

I definitely think they should all be in the same forum. I also believe it's a huge branding mistake on Apple's part to call a very competent piece of equipment (except their crappy screen) a "consumer" model. Laptops are about their size!

I don't like the idea of separating them. All three have enough commonalities and shared issues that they should be kept together. If someone has a problem with their machine and the answer isn't in the forum for that machine, then they have to browse two other forums to try to find the answer they need when they could have just browsed through one and found it straight away. By separating them, you will have to have posts in each forum addressing the same issues for the convenience of owners of the different models. And once you separate them by model, you'll be expected to separate them further, like 15 inch Macbook Pro vs 17 inch Macbook Pro or nVidia graphics vs ATi graphics or white/black Macbook vs Aluminum Macbook. It is just wasteful of hard drive space to separate all the laptops and will complicate forum maintenance. The only separations that should be required are 68k (for the vintage fans), PowerPC and Intel.

MB and MBP are remarkably similar and more likely an issue with one of them would relate directly to an issue in the other one so i think 1 forum for both is best.

Maybe start a whole new "Aluminum bodied laptops" forum. That way the older MBs/MBPs have their own, much needed, separate space, yet the newer models with so much similarities can join. I suggest a way to filter out MBs and MBPs from there though, as some issues are specific to each model.

But what about all those "MB or MBP Convince me!!!" posters.. where will their poor exploding heads post? :(;)

A valid point, the reason why I joined these forums so long ago is because I stumbled here out of the desert wasteland wondering which laptop to get!

I think that there should be a generic notebook forum because there are several topics that could pertain to ALL notebooks even PC's. Like batterys.

+1 for seperate forums...there are enough topics in the MacBook/iBook forums already. It would be hard for someone to get help on a topic when their post is already off the front page in less than an hour.

i voted for separate, but it would be nice if there was three separate pages for macbook, macbook pro, and macbook air (like it is now), and then one page that has all three combined. That way it is easier to answer questions.

I think if MR upgraded to the latest version of the vBulletin, the MB/MBP can be in one forum but with mandated Prefix option.

did we forget about the stupid dell mini netbooks running iAtkos and kalyway ripoffs of leopard. should they get their own forum? lol j/k

Well like everything else, Apple made the final decision for this.

Might as well combine now since there's only white Macbook that eventually will disappear.

Split them, but put all the old generation laptops in the other section (PowerBook and iBook), while keeping the current generation in the same section (MB & MBP).
