Apple wants to make money. I bet twice as many (probably even more) people would buy the 15" mbp if the price was reasonable. win win for everyone.

I'm not directing this at you but I don't understand why some people actually want apple to be expensive so it becomes more exclusive and "cool" to have. I've even witnessed a few macrumors members mention that they wish macbook pros were more expensive so less people would be able to afford them. Insanity...

Precisely. That was exactly the point I was criticizing in my post. It's not even insanity, it's extreme vanity - which is more disgusting because they are conscious of what they do (although we can make the case that many are just brainlessly following a trend - they are not insane. Repugnant, but not insane).

People with such attitudes are pretentious hipsters who used to get laid because of their exclusive MacBook Pros. Now that Tom, Dick and Harry have MBPs too, the exclusivity is gone.

Yay! It's directed at me!!!

I don't wish MBPs were more expensive so less people can afford them. I simply object to Apple gimping the insides so they can sell them to less demanding people, without offering anything at the top end like other manufacturers.

Sony and HP have been selling thin quad computers with great graphics for a while now for less money than Apple charges for dual core machines. I think it's about time that Apple lifts its game, and starts using better components. If other companies can do it, Apple can do it better (for a little extra money, of course).

Now I think about it, my rage isn't yet justified. But if Apple can't put quads in the MBPs, it will be. Quads should be standard on the 15" and 17".

Yeah, the exclusivity is gone, unfortunately we can't say the same for the pretentious wannabe hipsters!

Do you feel better now you've all had your rant? I do. I believe I can return to normal now.

At least for another few weeks, before Internet forum hatred makes me explode again :p

The Optical drive is still necessary for the Pros mainly due to the huge software Pro users use. I don't know about you, but I'm definitely not downloading either Final Cut or Logic Pro software over the internet. We just don't have the bandwidth to handle such a load. For any one of those, it takes over 3 hours, as is, just to install the software directly from the disk. I'd rather not turn that into a good part of a week.

This.

Nonsense. We still use the processor, the customization, the screen size, and like the price point. To say that the point of a notebook over a netbook is an optical drive is insane, especially in today's day and age. How about I refer back to my original post when I said that I wish the optical drive was a BTO? Or at least, to go sans one for upgraded battery / a second drive. Everyone's happy.

Ideally, that happens, though I don't picture Apple doing it. Although they essentially did it with the Mac mini...though I think they really did intend for that machine to be a server. Silly Apple, Trix are for kids.

Laptop of such price, should be a compact thing that contains all the things a professional need.

What's a professional macbook user?

Somebody that needs a license to purchase a MBP? Somebody certified to use one? Why do you think having "Pro" in the name entitles you to any special features? Are you special?

So whitebook MB, iMac owners are all amateurs?

You guys crack me up. :D

It is ridiculous to depend on other machines drives because a 2k dollars machine do not have one!

Then make your point with your wallet. Don't buy something that doesn't meet your specs.

You cannot force everybody to download dozens of gb for adobe suite or final cut pro!

Who the hell would want to spend $1k and download it anyway? Use your thin and light external OD drive for that "once in a lifetime" mega update. (Then put the thing back in mothballs till you need it again).

You cannot forbid somebody to watch a dvd-movie on his mbp when he is on travel!

Why not? Is this some law somewhere?

I had a '57 chevy that used regular gasoline with lead. Somebody forced me to use unleaded.

We need a real laptop full of features and capabilities, more than the existing models(some speak of bluray), not starting abstracting things and convert mbp to a plain netbook.

Again you people act like Apple is just going to chuck OD's in the dumpster for no other reason other than to piss you off. When they do remove it, there will be something else in its place that will make it worthwhile to everyone... every day.

lol it wasn't directed at you. I don't remember the names of the members who wished for apple to raise their prices nor do I want to call out those idiots. :p

Are the MBP 15 and 17 gimped too?

Yes... They are slightly now, as the 330M was a big mistake (and hopefully only used to test the graphics switching technology, so Apple could fall back on Optimus if it didn't work).

A whole lot of new tech has been released over the last year. Quad CPUs have for the first time been current gen (before they were still on the old 45nm process, while the duals were 32nm) so Apple really needs to use them. Also, AMD have far better, more power efficient GPUs. It seems likely that SSDs of some form will be standard too.

If you look at some other laptops available, like the HP Envy, you'll see what specs you're missing. Hence, if the next MBP line don't have specs similar to the next generation of HP Envys (ore even the present gen), then they've been gimped.

So, I guess will agree to dissolve all parts of mbp and carry them separately!
Hdd, additional ports, card readers etc.

Optical drive should remain because so many people need it and they should not be forced to buy external ones or carry additional peripherals.
Optical drive is one of the things that distinguish mbp from mba and other....netbooks, as a professional machine.

Totally disagree.

OD is dying breed. If you really need it, again, if you really need it, you can buy the external drive. It's not about forcing the customers to have it, but if majority of the people do not use it, and still put it in to meet some people with occasional use, who's forcing who?

I personally removed OD and put the separate HDD, and I haven't used OD for past 2 years ago. Not even a single time.

Install Final Cut, etc? Again, how many Mac Users out of all the existing MBPs actually use them? 1%? Probably less..

If you can afford to buy those and install for professional use, why can't you pay small $$$ to buy an USB external OD?

I really hope MBP drop the OD for good..

Step 1) Remove ODD from 13" MBP
Step 2) Replace with discrete ATI GPU
Step 3) ???
Step 4) Profit

How about Apple keeps core 2 duo/Nvidia graphics/Optical disk drive and that machine replaces the white macbook at the $999 price point. Because, let's be honest, a machine with C2D is not a "pro" machine nor should it be $1299.

As for the $1299 price point, this 13" MBP loses the Optical disk drive to make room for a discrete graphics card like the 15 and 17, and therefore can use SB processors.

So if you're a Pro users who desperately needs the Optical disk drive, get the 15 or 17. If you're a consumer/prosumer you can decide between the Alu $999 Macbook, or the 13" MBP, partly depending on whether you want the Optical Disk Drive.

Starting from when did the OD become the decision making point for Pro and non?

I want Pro in 15" or 17" because I want the large screen, fastest mobile cpu, and gpu as necessary. I don't need OD, period, and if I do, I can always use the external drive.

I'm not saying the ODD is the difference between the Pro and non-pro models.

If Apple keeps the C2D, it's a joke if they call the 13" Alu MBP a "pro" model. I agree that the Pro models should have the fastest CPU & GPU and it sounds like in order for that to happen for the 13", they will need to get rid of the ODD to free up space for a discrete graphics card. The 15 and 17 have space for the ODD, so at this point Apple can keep it in those models.

I would prefer if they made the ODD a BTO option on the 15/17 and used that space for better cooling or a larger battery.

My wish list:
13inch:
1440x900 display
i5 dual core SB
4GB RAM
No ODD
Discrete GPU
64GB SSD
320GB HDD

Anyone think it likely it'll have built in 3G? Like Sony.

And........TOMORROW, please!

Same as mine - although i guess the i5 is a bit too much to hope for.

oh - and I want a 1680x1050 matte option as well.

I hope they look to the future and drop the internal od. If they don't i'll pull it out and put an ssd in it's place. Hope I don't have to

I think that apple is going to avoid the blade SSD design as well as the removal of the Optical Disk Drive as that would cause the line between the Air and Pro models to become blurred. Instead, I think they'll do a few, minimal design changes, bump up the specs to sandy brigde and possibly include a 1440x900 display in the 13".

Intel's Chipset Production Setback

Does anyone else see this as a ploy to get us to buy the current MBPs rather than wait? or am i just being paranoid... (prof just agreed to buy me a laptop around $1200 so naturally i look to the MBP line)

Yeah, Intel decided to lose a billion this year just to help Apple trick us into taking old inventory off their hands. Definitely a ploy.

Wily bastards, they are.

I agree, i think they would loose a lot of customers because i think most consumers will use the optical drive, or at least think they need it and the screen i highly believe will be bumped. Probably no sdd as a standard option. I think that it will not be as amazing as most people think.

I also agree. I could be wrong here, but implementing a blade SSD design would eliminate the option of upgrading or replacing the drive. So when (and if :p ) the cost per GB for SSDs goes down, you're still stuck with the measly 64 or 128 GB. Pro users, in general, like the ability to upgrade , whereas air users just want the dang thing to work.

However, I do still have high hopes for a chassis update. Apple's very proud of how thin they can make everything (including my wallet). If the frustratingly vague tagline "future of macbooks" is in fact a "clue"...then I hope apple drops the ODD and adopts the blade design. As I've argued before (AppStore, external ODD) I believe no ODD is a very plausible prediction for the new lineup.
