just out of curiosity how long has the current model of the macbook pro been out for?

I can see them getting rid of the 13" MBP and have those replaced completely by the MBA and white macbooks. The 15 and 17 MBP will stay with their ODD and regular hard drives.

I just don't see the prices and capacities of SSDs being cheap enough next year to replace regular hard drives completely.

nah getting rid of the 13" MBP's (i believe they came out this year?) is just too absurd for them.. the 13" MBP is one of their leading sellers and it would be stupid for them to get rid of it.. people need a computer that is "pro" as ell as portable.. i cant imagine them getting rid of the 13".. what i see and hope is they get rid of the OD and add SSD's. maybe a combo of HDD and SSD- Hybrid?
this leaves them with a 13" Pro model for those who want higher specs and portability and leave the OD is the 15+17" models as they have room.

i guess people have to understand that they can't always have the best of both worlds and since CD's are being slowly deteriorating i can see this.. the one thing that might stop them is software, such as Office and obviously Final Cut Pro.
however however on the FCP page these are the GB size it will take up:
4GB of disk space required to install all applications (Final Cut Pro, Color, DVD Studio Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, Cinema Tools, Compressor, and Apple Qmaster)
46GB of disk space required for optional content

9GB for DVD Studio Pro content
7GB for Motion templates
22GB for audio content
8GB for LiveFonts

*note this is for Final cut studio
the 46GB throws me off as that can't fit in one CD or DVD- but im guessing the total file size would be around 8 GB max? and if so they can start using flash drives like OSX? i actually see that happening, but im a bit ignorant in this matter specifically?

for the 13" I'm thinkin

sdd or possibly sdd+hdd storage
mba resolution
sb i5
i don't know about gpu
bigger and better battery
no optical drive
and I think they'll stay with the $1199 price point

the only reason for losing the OD is space (which can be used to speed up the mbp, etc.) and weight. as there is no shortage of space in the mbp 15 (but only in the mbp 13), why should they drop the OD for all models?
i think only the mbp 13 will have no OD, as otherwise it cannot use a advanced gpu and the newest intel chips (due to the lack of space).
the mbp 15 will therefore most certainly have a OD build in.

If the 15" and 17" MBPs had enough space inside, they would have quad core CPUs and half decent GPUs. The fact that they don't should suggest to you that no MBP has enough internal space.

and every other freaking tech site on the net

Does anyone else get the feeling that "two guys" just randomly pulled a date and some loose specs out of nothing, and now everyone's jumping on this as gospel? I'm still convinced there's an excellent (at least 50%) chance that there are new Sandy Bridge MBPs by the end of February 2011.

After all, exactly what new technology are we waiting on, that won't be out by mid-January?

I'm loving all the speculation in this thread. Hoping myself for a somewhat new form, still Unibody but better. As has been mentioned the MBP could lose a few pounds. Some have said they can't loose firewire, can hand-on-heart say I've never used firewire. The port on my desktop is full of dust.
I'm holding out for the new MBP, been saving up for it. My archaic self built desktop is coming to the end of it's long life.

I think Apple innovation has already peaked. At least for a while. It's all been invented already. :D

Seriously, the only "pioneering" milestone that's left that could come in such a short time would be light peak. That and of course Steve's obsession to make devices so thin they double as salad dicers.

The Air is it right now and the key is to turn that thing into a "pro" machine. (Which won't happen for a very long time).

there is never enough space :) what i meant is that the 13" desperately needs the room for a discrete gpu.

i also think the mbp will be out near february.

The high level trend is that laptops are getting lighter, more powerful and providing better battery life.

The other trends are that optical drives are getting less relevant while SSD and GPUs are getting more relevant.

Use your imagination as to what Apple will do with the MBP line.

Blimey! I rarely post but i must say that some of these predictions are, well, on the ignorant side.

Let us not forget that Apple still have C2D in production, why? Because they love to ride them for as long as possible to maximise the length of the production line. That ain't rocket science chaps!

to put it as black & white as possible, I see these 2 markets.

1. Consumer - Love the external appearance, Apple software enhancements and all the gimmicks etc. etc. We all know that a lot of these folk probably just browse facebook and do a bit of the 'ol Tesco shopping online but, Apple know they can pull their naive panties down and give them a good almighty technological 'roggering' by updating the exterior and leave the interior looking as ugly as Susan boyle the morning after a night out! This goes for all Apple lines, period. It works, Apple make lots of money, consumer got a new shiny 'must have' product.

2. Professional - Well we appreciate a nice design, oh yes we do and, to be fair apple hasn't let us down over the years. (although a black MBP would make me wet my pants a little I must admit) But to us, we're constantly wanting more internal power pooring in and out of every soldered orifice.

I got the late 2008 15" 2.53 MBP, wasn't impressed internally, lovely exterior update, semi happy....BUT, I needed it at the time so bought it. Up until Mid this year just after the switch to i5 and i7 I was running, CS5 Master Collection, multitasking DW, FW, AI, PS and a host of generic applications. constantly uploading to servers and it still run insanely well. Anyway, later it all went 'capoot' my dog knocked it off the desk, so I got a new 2.4GHz 15" MBP with 4GB 320GB Hi Res Gloss under insurance. I'm going to say this...It WILL perform well with the i5 processor for the next 4 years, 8GB possibly 5.

Now this is where I'm going to rant a little at designers on here who are moaning a little at the graphics...You're a designer, I don't know any serious designer that works off of anything smaller than a 21" display. You just would never rely on a laptop graphics card by itself. If you were working with respectable clients in the professional World, it wouldn't be acceptable.

Apple has internally updated the MBP considerably in April this year, in fact not just Apple but Intel have stepped a gigantic step forward with all their new chips and they will only get better over the years.

Fact is this, if you bought the 04/2011 onwards this year, well done, be happy you have a delightful machine. If you want to upgrade your C2D or this is the first time you're buying a MBP don't be scared to buy now, you won't regret not waiting. If you are waiting for the new MBP expecting a powerhouse of a machine, me thinks you might be disappointed.

Also keep in mind that Apple has started a trend of being more powerful and more power efficient as the years go on, so if there are going to be updates, they will have to fall in line with this mantra.

Like most peoples, I believe the new mbp will loose the OD. Loosing the OD will make the mbp a better portable solution for many reason already told... but I think will see the OD pop up on the 27" Apple display.

Think of it, the 27" Apple monitor with the webcam and the OD will be a killer combination.

Now if only someone somewhere could find out who manufacture the unibody, maybe with some good old phone social skill we could obtain some info about a unibody whitout a opening for the OD or a monitor body with one  Yep dreaming... :D

Keep in mind, the PowerBook/MBP had roughly the same design from 2003 until the unibodies appeared, so I don't see any reason to change the current body so soon. Plus, it's a great design, so why waste cash on DD towards something completely different?

Invest money into the tech/guts, and keep reducing end-consumer costs. Personally, I'm indifferent about the loss of internal optical, but would hope it stays as an option on at least some Apple portable for those users who still need one.

I look here
https://buyersguide.macrumors.com//#MacBook_Pro

As I can see, apple never gone for a full year for a full update.
6-8-10 months maximum time between updates, all over the years in the past!
So I think that april 2011 is the last barrier for updates. If it is april it would be a whole 1 year from previous update and it would be the first time in mpb history.

Giving the fact that sandy bridge is about to fall in the market in the beginning of 2011, maybe february-april is the final verdict of predictions about when the new model will appear.
This is my opinion.

i think we will won't see a full switch to SSDs, but it might be an option. In my opinion a smaller SSD (like 64GB) for OS and Apps combined with a HDD (320gb) would be a cool thing to have.
I really hope that apple will remove the odd and use the space for a better gpu and i think that is realistic since blizzard and steam release a lot of games for mac these days.
The cpu of the 13" mbp should be a i5 imo, but maybe it is more likely that we will see the i3 in the 13 inch version :(.
Releasedate should be in february if you ask me, april would take way too long plus i dont think that they will introduce lightpeak in the next gen.

first post btw :)

cheers

whats the difference between the i5 currently and the SB i processors?

(although a black MBP would make me wet my pants a little I must admit)

If Apple would reintroduce the color "Black" in the polycarb unit I dare say C2D processors could live another 3 years. (Or any other subpar CPU for that matter).

Better yet, just revamp the 13" whitebook, offer more colors (including black) and discontinue the 13" MBP all together. I still insist there are too many 13" laptops in the lineup so something's got to give.

there is no reason to discontinue the 13" mbp. it sells great (in my experience far better than the original mb).
also, c2d will not be produced anymore in 2011...

I also will be purchasing a 13" MBP probably next May which means by mid June it will be discontinued. :D
