Blimey! I rarely post but i must say that some of these predictions are, well, on the ignorant side.
Let us not forget that Apple still have C2D in production, why? Because they love to ride them for as long as possible to maximise the length of the production line. That ain't rocket science chaps!
to put it as black & white as possible, I see these 2 markets.
1. Consumer - Love the external appearance, Apple software enhancements and all the gimmicks etc. etc. We all know that a lot of these folk probably just browse facebook and do a bit of the 'ol Tesco shopping online but, Apple know they can pull their naive panties down and give them a good almighty technological 'roggering' by updating the exterior and leave the interior looking as ugly as Susan boyle the morning after a night out! This goes for all Apple lines, period. It works, Apple make lots of money, consumer got a new shiny 'must have' product.
2. Professional - Well we appreciate a nice design, oh yes we do and, to be fair apple hasn't let us down over the years. (although a black MBP would make me wet my pants a little I must admit) But to us, we're constantly wanting more internal power pooring in and out of every soldered orifice.
I got the late 2008 15" 2.53 MBP, wasn't impressed internally, lovely exterior update, semi happy....BUT, I needed it at the time so bought it. Up until Mid this year just after the switch to i5 and i7 I was running, CS5 Master Collection, multitasking DW, FW, AI, PS and a host of generic applications. constantly uploading to servers and it still run insanely well. Anyway, later it all went 'capoot' my dog knocked it off the desk, so I got a new 2.4GHz 15" MBP with 4GB 320GB Hi Res Gloss under insurance. I'm going to say this...It WILL perform well with the i5 processor for the next 4 years, 8GB possibly 5.
Now this is where I'm going to rant a little at designers on here who are moaning a little at the graphics...You're a designer, I don't know any serious designer that works off of anything smaller than a 21" display. You just would never rely on a laptop graphics card by itself. If you were working with respectable clients in the professional World, it wouldn't be acceptable.
Apple has internally updated the MBP considerably in April this year, in fact not just Apple but Intel have stepped a gigantic step forward with all their new chips and they will only get better over the years.
Fact is this, if you bought the 04/2011 onwards this year, well done, be happy you have a delightful machine. If you want to upgrade your C2D or this is the first time you're buying a MBP don't be scared to buy now, you won't regret not waiting. If you are waiting for the new MBP expecting a powerhouse of a machine, me thinks you might be disappointed.
