Geez, the price on ram has plumeted in the last 6 months. I might have to pick up 8 gigs, and sell my 4 gigs of apple ram. Looks like the selling price on the bay for oem apple ram is around $40 to $60. So the 8gb upgrade is pretty cheap then...

please please let us know if it works well, i really need 8gigs of ram for recording, i just sent back the owc ram, i need good working ram.

wondering too. the G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) Laptop Memory Model F3-8500CL7D-8GBSQ is now $104.99 w/ free shipping

Is it difficult to install laptop RAM? I realized 4gb just isn't enough for me. I get alot of page in and out since I need more than 4 gb.

I have only experience with desktops, but I have never opened laptops, let alone replace parts of laptops.

Very easy. Takes about 10 minutes and you need a tiny screwdriver - which you can get from OWC or a drug store that has a eyeglass repair kit. Here are the videos to show you how

Sounds like a good deal, but I'd rather hold on to my old factory RAM. The main reason is if my new 8gb of RAM from crucial ever fail, I'll be able to put something inside my macbook pro until I get the other RAM replaced.

Just a heads up for everyone ordering.

When I placed my order with Crucial, I asked what happens if I order now, then the price goes down further in a week.
They said that I have a 45 day window, that if the price goes down, I can call and ask for a credit adjustment. You can only ask for this once during the 45 days though. Still, I order now for $116.99, check their website in 40 days, and if it's lower, just give them a call. It's a no brainer.

Another Bad one

I bought OWC brand and installed yesterday. Had screen flickering 3x yesterday and 4x this morning. Called OWC tech support. They had me try using one stick and PRAm reset. They said to try that for a few hours. If it works install te second chip, reboot and do a hardware check. Well it worked with one stick when I put the second one in and rebooted I keep getting 3 beeps which repeated, and repeated until I help the power button down. I called back and they had me try running just the suspect ram and that worked. Then they said to put both back in and try again since it may have been a seating problem - I doubted it but best to just try again. Anyway, after placing both back in the flickering began again.

I called them back for the 3rd time and replacement RAM is going out on Monday and they emailed me a shipping label to return the defective ram. That's the benefit of the advanced warranty, they send out the replacement right of way. Of course this is not needed if it worked in the first place

OWC is a great company to do business with. But from reading through this thread, there seems to be an inordinate amount of problems with their RAM. Their advance replacement warranty is definitely needed in this case.

For those that bought the OWC RAM, can you explain to me why you did after reading about all of the problems with their RAM ahead of time?

I found this thread the day after I ordered but their overall reputation on this site and elsewhere made me comfortable with the decision. Also, this thread began with the non-OWC branded RAM and I ordered the 'good one'. The advance warranty is a key factor and even though I had my share of problems in the past 24 hours what if this was defective RAM from elsewhere. It would take 2x longer to get a replacement since it has to go back....

Today I spoke with 2 different tech support people at OWC. In both cases I made sure they knew about this thread and that they likely have a bad batch. Also, I told them that OWC is telling two different stories about their RAM. I had asked them on the phone what the difference was between OWC and NuRam I was told 'NuRam is private labeled generic & the warranty difference', The email response to my question stated the difference is only warranty and both are major brands. But, strictly speaking there is no reason why both warranties can't be identical, especially if the only difference is warranty (and price) because for me to take advantage of the advanced warranty I had to give them a credit card number to hold in case the 'defective ram' doesn't show up. No reason why they can't do that for all warrantied products.

I hope the replacement will be good. I won't do this 3x

Yes they are great to deal with for the first time. They will replace it for free but you will find a letter that they did it as a courtesy and that they checked the RAM and it was working fine.
Now the second batch isn't working either and I'll have to call back on Monday and ask for a refund. Will they charge me for shipping this time?
Anyway it was an annoying experience.

I'm really sad to see so many bad experiences reported with OWC RAM... my OWC SSD has been FANTASTIC and my 6GB OWC RAM in my old MBP has been good as well.

I'm about to take the plunge and get 8GB for my new MBP sometime within the next week... I really wanted to go OWC but I'm slightly hesitant now.

I'll mull it over for another few days.

I don't think that's the case here. I think that they have received a bunch of flawed ram from their source. OWC is well respected in the Mac community, as has been pointed out here many times in this thread.

We'll i agree that OWC has always been well respected and the old ram i bought from them has worked flawlessly for the past 3 years. This faulty batch is really ruining there reputation in my eyes, especially if this next batch of "OWC branded" ram that i bought does not work again.

I don't blame you at all. Though I wouldn't hesitate to buy another 2.5" drive from them, any future RAM needs and I'll most likely go thru Newegg.

There's something just not right about a lot of the RAM being sold for modern Macbooks and iMacs.

If you have the Samsung or Hynix memory then you can run right up to the maximum and you'll be just fine.

But it's pretty clear that we cannot recommend 16 GB of OWC NuRAM in the 2010 iMac lines, and there's a building database of anecdotal evidence that NuRAM and OWC's own brand, together with a lot of RAM being sold by Crucial, is just not suited to our machines even though they appear to outwardly comply with Apple's specifications.

On the iMac side of things, we have no explanation why it is perfectly clear that 16 GB of OWC NuRAM does not work, or why your machine won't even start with 16 GB of Crucial RAM, but it'll work perfectly with 16 GB of Samsung.

It sounds like a very similar situation is developing on the Macbook side of things.

success

well after my first "major brand" ram was faulty i returned it and ordered the OWC branded memory.

IT WORKS!!

I have ran rember with zero errors and the computer is experiencing no hangs or flickers. I am going to run a tech tool deluxe later when i go out but as of now it seems to work.

You have restored my faith in you OWC.

I hope it works out well for you. Give it a couple days though. Both techtool deluxe and Rember gave me 100% passing marks, yet I was having random hangups on both shutdown and bootup. As well as a couple kernel panics when waking from sleep. I didn't notice the problems until at least a day had passed. Then they kept happening.
