Do we know where the safe area is? Is it top-center?

We don't know; all we know is that this version of Safari was apparently built against a future version of macOS that has a concept of a safe area of the screen. Whether that's used at all, and whether that's for a notch (or, perhaps, for rounded corners, say), we don't know.

I, for one, welcome our new notch overlords

So only the only part of Monterey with code that could accommodate a notch is Safari? Hardly compelling evidence of the something which affects the OS and all apps.

What horrible move , notch notch. What is going on with apple. ? They got stack in technology? Steve must be rolling around in his grave ….Jeeesh

Apple never mentions the word notch, and they will probably call it the most advanced display they ever created.

Brands manufacturing laptops w/o bezels usually place the webcam at the bottom of the screen resulting in a low angle view. This is horrible. A notch that houses the webcam and placed at the top solves that.

That said, I'd like to see Face ID as well.

If the first version of Monterey isn't built to accommodate the notch, it's not happening in Monday's computers.

Monterey isn't out, so we don't know either way.

(And it could still be that Monday's computers get a different build than everyone else.)

I can’t see old Tim agreeing to anything but a rectangular screen, unless ones with notches are cheaper!

Look it up this way: Apple is adding additional display space on both sides of the camera.
That’s what happened with the iPhone. We didn’t lose display area; we gain extra display on both sides of the camera.
Why so much commotion?

why do people want faceid so badly on the mbp? we already have touchid biometric authentication.

notch is coming whether you like it or not. its to make the bezels thinner and prevent people from blocking their webcams for spying purposes.

Except that the betas already refer to the new display resolutions, which would not be the case if Apple is doing a separate build for secrecy's sake. So if the betas don't have it, Monday's computers won't.
