The entire computer is being redesigned but you think the notch is what will tell people you have the new one?
Obviously yes, the entire computer is being redesigned. And no, but I think it fits with Apples marketing. Don’t the notchless iPhone 8 feel super old by now? It’s about embracing the new design language altogether.

Just like the glowing Apple logo was, this will be a visual cue in every lecture hall moving forward, for people in the raised back rows. It especially makes sense if they are indeed removing the MacBook Pro lettering. Also, remember that the iPhone (just like the iPod in the old days) is now the gateway to the Mac, so it makes sense to carry over the design to the Mac. Although perhaps more so if it has Face ID!

Um, that's not a reason for the bump. Easy to make the whole phone bigger so that the camera lens fits flush.

IOW, it's a reason for the bump.

Like, yes, they could make the entire phone thicker instead, but that's not what people by and large want.

Anyone know why the ribbon is angled and not running straight, strain relief???

Never understood why people insist in edge to edge screens where the top has to be clipped and that area of the screen ends up nearly useless. What is wrong with a small top bezel to fit the camera?

I think I'm saving a few bucks and just getting an M1 Air unless that part of the screen can be set to black all the time

This would be awesome. The only thing sitting in that space for me is the Apple-logo menu bar and the icons for changing volume and so. This would be the best thing ever, and really a step forwards.

Probably mimic iOS where Control Centre is housed along with the Apple logo and some system preferences.

Apps that spread further past the notch may have some double arrow to expand ability or look fine with a higher resolution or something under the notch.

To make the top bezel thinner. A T shaped design would be thicker due to the flex connector.

The current MacBook Air and Pro use an L shaped design.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand what's going on in that Twitter photo?

Everyone: Yes.

Me: OK.

a bezel is good.

it separates the screen from whats behind - reducing strain and cognitive load.

zero-bezel is a marketing fad driven by journalists with no understanding at all
My Z Fold 3, multiple monitors, and all of my TVs are all nearly bezeless. Everything that you've said is beyond ridiculous. Clearly you have bezel envy. Wow 😳

It's a schematic laid on top of an actual photo of the new MacBook Pro display along with 3D CAD drawings of the camera module along with a Doraemon image to express disappointment.

Oh. That's why it's confusing mess and I'm not sure how anyone got info from it. But...I am dumb.

Notch without Face ID makes no sense at all.
This times 100. It makes sense only if they wish to bring it next year.
Apple doesn’t give everything at once to fuel upgrades and $.

Some examples from the not so distant past:

1. Always on display in the Apple Watch:
Both 4 & 5 had OLED, but it was only the 5 that got always on. The 5 didnt even get a cpu bump, but always on was a game changer and fueled upgrades even from people who just bought the series 5. Yeah sure LTPO et, all but this was all money.

2. Promotion on the iPhone
Couldve put it on the 11/12 Pro’s, they had the adaptive refresh rate tech from the iPad Pro Already, but no gotta buy the 13 series.

3. Paltry 4GB Ram in the ipad pros and iPhones for the longest time.
Also a notch with Face ID. I'm not sure why people are conflating a notch and Face ID. There is no reason Face ID couldn't fit in a laptop bezel.
The only point to be made is, If I, a user has to bear the nonsense of a notch, it should have the advantage of FaceID. What is more accurate to question is, there is no reason the webcam, and ambient sensors can’t fit in a laptop bezel.
