It appears that Steve Troughton-Smith gets the idea:
So yeah, taller menu bar up top, probably will expand when you move your mouse to it if you have a lot more items then can fit, and will be black.
To me, this all sounds great. So the notch will not intrude on any actual content or workflow, and you’ll still have the full 16/10 Display area you’ve always had, untouched.
In fact, you’ll have more area to work with since the menu bar will be pushed up top.
There’s actually a lot of benefits if you get past the “but notch bad” stage.
And this is coming from a person who thought the rumor was absolutely ridiculous the first time I read it.
But the more and more I learn about it, the more and more it just makes sense, and would actually be better in some cases if you can just get past the initial “WTF” reaction.
You get a larger main screen area, you get a better WebCam, and it doesn’t intrude on your content like it does on the iPhone.
It’s really a win-win situation

Apple could provide simple software solutions to allay most of the concerns of those who think that the notch is ugly.

They could include an option to display the menu bar with white text on a black background. This is already possible if you choose the Dark option in System Preferences > General > Appearance. With a mini-LED backlight, this would probably render the notch invisible for most users.

For users who run with lots of menu bar items, there could be a switch to drop the menu bar below the notch. The switch could be triggered automatically, or via a user setting in System Preferences. The same switch could be used to prevent the notch from impinging when apps are using full screen mode.

In Monterey, there already is an option to display the menu bar in fullscreen.
And when this option is enabled, when you enter full screen, the menu bar turns dark.
Which seems to be exactly what you’re describing here.
As for people who have so many items in the menu bar that they would need more space, the simple solution would be to just expand the menu bar when you move your mouse to the top of the screen.
So you can choose a set amount of things that are always available in the menu bar/notch ears, and then this could be expanded when the mouse is moved to up at the top

Lol. That damn notch. Jeez. I thought we were eventually going away with it but Apple seems to want to add it to its other line of products. I hope this isn’t the case!

Following a sketchy rumor that claimed the next MacBook Pro models could feature a notch at the top of the display, an alleged photo of a MacBook Pro with a notch was shared today by Weibo account AnyTurtle999, as spotted by Twitter account DuanRui.

A close-up view of the alleged notch at the top of the image appears to show a FaceTime camera, microphone, and an ambient light sensor for True Tone. Earlier this week, a Reddit user claimed that the next MacBook Pro will not feature Face ID despite having a notch, with a Touch ID sensor expected to remain above the keyboard for authentication.

The photo is blurry and it's unclear if it's authentic, so some skepticism is warranted here. If the photo proves to be real, however, it suggests that the next MacBook Pro models could feature very thin bezels around the display.

In the macOS Monterey beta, MacRumors discovered potential display resolutions of 3024x1964 and 3456x2234 for the rumored 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. When subtracting 74 pixels from the height of both, the resulting 3024x1890 and 3456x2160 resolutions work out to an aspect ratio of 16:10. All of Apple's current MacBooks feature a 16:10 aspect ratio, leading to speculation that the extra 74 pixels could be for a notch.

Apple is hosting a virtual event on Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, with rumors widely suggesting the event will be focused on redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with a faster version of the M1 chip and brighter mini-LED displays. The notebooks are also expected to feature an HDMI port, an SD card reader, and a magnetic power cable, while ditching the Touch Bar in favor of a return to physical Fn keys.

Apple: stop spreading false/sketchy rumors around. Are you doing this so people can talk about the upcoming Mac and the new event or what? Apple’s marketing team is working hard this weekend. Getting that free publicity, advertisement and attention without paying a single penny.

So the notch is present and Face ID isn’t? What’s the point of having a notch???

A notch wouldn’t be a big deal given the Mac has a permanent bar along the top. I just wish I could have an OLED 120Hz VRR display.
What about when you use an app in full screen? Like always, this defeats the purpose of a 14” screen if the app runs in 13.5”

What Mac laptop has ever had a 100% edge to edge screen like this representation? What a wonderful way to have a cracked display on a laptop if hit/dropped on its side. That's why they all have the chassis larger than the display.

I think the 14” size would be gained primarily by increasing the size of the chassis slightly and decreasing the size of the side bezels. This is what Apple did to make the 15.4” a 16” display.

So, a better way to think about this is not that it’s a notch, but it’s increasing the display upward around where the web camera is now. The usable display will be 14” and that will NOT include the menu bar and “notch” strip.

I’m trying to convince myself that this is a good idea ;-)

Yes, increasing the display vertically by 74 pixels, screen dimensions earlier in this thread explain that

It looks weird at first, but yeah, since macOS already has the menu bar up there it's easy to see how this could be done in a smart way.

Plus, with a mini-LED display the top of your screen should be able to stay a nice dark black in full screen mode when the menu bar isn't visible.

When I read this, you seem convinced if it - so in other words, when the chip shortage is over, Max market share will shrink cause everyone is going to buy dell and Lenovo again…
ROFL
Keep laughing, shows you don’t understand how the business works. If you actually look at marketshare per quarter for the major manufacturers, you will see that Apple is way behind, especially in the business market. When the chip shortage hit, everyone else could not ship orders (they have way more orders than Apple anyway). What happened was Apple increased their own laptop sales by over 90%, which sounds great, but yet their overall market share increased only by 0.6%. They were fourth in overall sales. After Lenovo, HP and Dell. Dell outsold Apple almost by a factor of two, both HP and Lenovo almost by a factor of three. Each that is. Overall the laptop market saw an increase of over 80% due to the pandemic and work-from-home with companies now buying into consumer brands like Apple and Acer. And by consumer brands I mean those not offering business conditions such as same day on-site repair. Acer saw a similar growth as Apple (a little less), due to the business market virtually sold out. Anyone who thinks the laptop market will continue to grow by over 80% annually after the pandemic and chip shortage is over, must be flying with those flying pigs. 😂
It will continue for a while, maybe for all of 2022, time will tell. Lenovo, HP and Dell still have back orders they won’t be able to fulfill until mid next year. Curious to see how much stock Apple is piling up for late 2021 and early 2022 shipments. But even with the shortage, they will sell way less than either Dell, HP or Lenovo.

A notch on a MacBook is horrible. It’s bad enough that we still have it on the iPhone.
Continued record sales of iPhones would indicate the market feels otherwise...each person definitely has their own preference. I'd love to see how many people now have an iPhone with a notch after they said they hate the notch and wouldn't upgrade until the notch was gone.
