This is beyond wrong. The issue with the notch is that it is WITHIN the aspect ratio. It dips INTO the screen area which is the main problem in the first place. The aspect ratio includes the notch. You can’t subtract it.
no, re-read the post re the screen resolution, the notch is above the 16:10 aspect ration area, so additional real estate of 74 pixels

Keep laughing, shows you don’t understand how the business works. If you actually look at marketshare per quarter for the major manufacturers, you will see that Apple is way behind, especially in the business market. When the chip shortage hit, everyone else could not ship orders (they have way more orders than Apple anyway). What happened was Apple increased their own laptop sales by over 90%, which sounds great, but yet their overall market share increased only by 0.6%. They were fourth in overall sales. After Lenovo, HP and Dell. Dell outsold Apple almost by a factor of two, both HP and Lenovo almost by a factor of three. Each that is. Overall the laptop market saw an increase of over 80% due to the pandemic and work-from-home with companies now buying into consumer brands like Apple and Acer. And by consumer brands I mean those not offering business conditions such as same day on-site repair. Acer saw a similar growth as Apple (a little less), due to the business market virtually sold out. Anyone who thinks the laptop market will continue to grow by over 80% annually after the pandemic and chip shortage is over, must be flying with those flying pigs. 😂
It will continue for a while, maybe for all of 2022, time will tell. Lenovo, HP and Dell still have back orders they won’t be able to fulfill until mid next year. Curious to see how much stock Apple is piling up for late 2021 and early 2022 shipments. But even with the shortage, they will sell way less than either Dell, HP or Lenovo.
You do realize that most business customers who purchase windows computers can’t just switch over to a Mac because Windows computers aren’t available, right?
Especially now that Boot Camp is basically going the same way of The light up Apple logo, businesses can’t just switch to Mac if they’re already invested in a Windows ecosystem, especially not in the middle of a pandemic.
What’s more likely is that Apple has sold more laptops over the past two years because:
A: during the pandemic, people have needed more laptops to work from home.
B: growing irritation with Intel.
And C: because Apple has been really focusing on the Mac Apple Silicon transition, introducing computers with actual reasons to purchase, like great, actual all day battery life and real increases in speed over their competitors.
You see, when they produce quality, like the new M1 MacBook Air, they sell more product.

Continued record sales of iPhones would indicate the market feels otherwise...each person definitely has their own preference. I'd love to see how many people now have an iPhone with a notch after they said they hate the notch and wouldn't upgrade until the notch was gone.

Nobody buys a phone because it has a notch. People buy the phone because it's Apple. They buy it and accept it has a notch. Some get used to it, some don't. It's just something we have to live with on a phone because it's the price we pay for FaceID and a front facing camera with an edge to edge screen.

As for a Notch on laptop computer. The menu bar and Mac OS won't actually suffer as I doubt most people actually have that many items across the menu bar. So it would only be taking up dead space. That's fine on the face of it, but in regards to apps how will it affect them??? It could get messy for developers.

But surely there'd have been some hint to this in Monterey. The question is, how big a difference will it make to a laptop computer? I know for viewing full screen content it will be annoying, but beyond that, I think most people use computer apps with the menu bar and not full screen.

Mmm... maybe this actually isn't too bad on a computer compared to a mobile phone. This may give us a slight bit more on screen real estate for apps like Keynote, Pages etc.

On the phone I dislike the notch, on a computer... I'm trying to think through the scenarios. The only problem at the moment is full screen video. But there could be more.

But a notch and no FaceID seems wrong.

If this notch nonsense happens then it's all over for Apple.
If I had a dollar every time someone said something to the affect of this.
If Apple enters the phone market, they will be destroyed by BlackBerry and Motorola.
The iPad is just a big iPod touch, you are now looking at the dissent of Apple.
The new retina 2012 MacBook Pro doesn’t let you upgrade the RAM, apples finished.
The Apple Watch is nothing but a notification toy, I miss Steve Jobs.
The 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is the death of the Mac as we know it.
Apple remove the headphone jack, they’re doomed.
The iPhone X has a notch, ugliest thing ever and Apple will suffer for it.
A $1000 display stand, apple is on their deathbed.
If Apple moves away from X 86, it’s over for the Macintosh.
If Apple removes the power adapter from the box, they have officially jumped the shark.
If The new MacBook Pro has a notch, Apple will immediately go bankrupt.
Anyway , $2 trillion later and I don’t think Apple‘s worried about anything.

it would actually be additional screen real estate and that is why I find this rumor credible ...we'll find out soon enough

nice summary ... and I'm willing to bet that Apple will sell more of the new laptops than ever before ...

Oh my gosh. How inelegant this would be for Apple! (And I am considering an XPS, so no fanboy here). Then you have to ask software devs to reduce upper menu bar icons/font sizes or pull downs leading to text being cut or scrunched. This is THE longest thread about the WORST rumor I have seen. I might be a fool on Monday, but today is Saturday and I cannot comprehend them doing this. Like other posters have mentioned, they may be having some fun with this, or finding where leaks are coming from. But production units? I really can't believe it.

A notch on a MacBook is horrible. It’s bad enough that we still have it on the iPhone.

The notch is seriously a non-issue. I still don't understand why people are so emotionally distraught over it. If anything, it's "extra" screen wrapped around the notch rather the notch imposing on the screen real estate.

As for a notch on the Mac, if it does come with one, it better have Face ID, otherwise it's purely form over function.

For me, wearing an Apple Watch offers a seamless secure way to unlock my Mac, but does mean that someone else can unlock it as long as I'm nearby, so Face ID closes that loophole.

Exactly! So much energy is wasted complaining about things that don't matter in the long run, or completely miss the boat with understanding Apple! Don't people think that Apple has done their market research? Gotten feedback from a large test population? Sure, they mess up once in a while, but it's rare.

I say anti-notchers are the same as anti-maskers. Annoying noise and nothing more.

Actually, since the display below the notch would be an identical 16/10 aspect ratio, and the only thing that would be up in the notch area would be the menu bar, developers wouldn’t have to change a thing

Even on my 2013 13" MacBook Air, none of my apps utilize the middle space of the menubar. If any app does have that many menus, they are likely overdoing it and that's their app's design flaw, not Apple's.

Click through 10 of your apps and tell me how many have menus to the center of the screen. I wait to be corrected.

I swear.
Some people act like Apple is stupid.
Spoiler alert: they’re not.
They make some weird decisions here and there, but they’re a company with thousands of employees who have to use these machines.
If there is a notch, it’s clearly not just gonna be a big gap in macOS, Apple will have clearly put thousands of hours of development into it to make sure that it is functional.
You don’t have to worry about your final cut randomly having a big gap in the middle of the toolbar, that’s not how this works.

So essentially back to early OS X Developer Preview 3-4 and Public Beta centred menubar logo we go. I suppose they still had the code laying around to flow the menubar items around the non-functional center 😉

So exactly what I said: Physics is NOT the reason for the bump. Physics certainly allows designing a phone with a camera and no bump, it would just be a thicker phone. So the OP was wrong. The reason for the bump is that Apple wants to make a phone thinner than the camera specs will allow, so they compromise by having a bump instead of a thicker phone.

I’m glad you agree it’s because of physics.

This thing better be 15/17" respectively if there is a notch because I want that display to go RIGHT up to the edge.

At least on the Mac the middle top portion of the display is barely ever used since the Menu Bar has the menu on the left and icons/clock on the right. Would be interesting to see how it handles full screen mode, though.

This is why they haven't done the notch on the iPad. It can be held in any orientation so it would be constantly annoying. It also benefits from a margin for holding.
