Lol looks like just a cam and mic module in the notch, this is awful - I'd be fine if it had FaceID... but wow.

Yes, increasing the display vertically by 74 pixels, screen dimensions earlier in this thread explain that
Yes, I remember. I said that for this to work the menu bar would have to be fixed at 74 pixels no matter what screen resolution was selected. Otherwise, the notch would protrude downward with high resolutions and narrower menu bars or the menu bar would wrap under the notch when a low resolution was selected with a deeper/taller menu bar.

I don’t like this idea, but … physics. I’ll have to get over the “sanctity” of the display feeling intruded upon.

Those measurements are 14.77” diagonally, so a 14” screen fits perfectly, maybe (hopefully?) with enough space to avoid the notch.

On one hand the notch isn’t great, but the trade off between having a small notch but smaller overall footprint might be worthy.
If I have to choose between more real estate and living with the notch or the bezel that my MBPs currently have I'm going for the former.

Keep laughing, shows you don’t understand how the business works. If you actually look at marketshare per quarter for the major manufacturers, you will see that Apple is way behind, especially in the business market. When the chip shortage hit, everyone else could not ship orders (they have way more orders than Apple anyway). What happened was Apple increased their own laptop sales by over 90%, which sounds great, but yet their overall market share increased only by 0.6%. They were fourth in overall sales. After Lenovo, HP and Dell. Dell outsold Apple almost by a factor of two, both HP and Lenovo almost by a factor of three. Each that is. Overall the laptop market saw an increase of over 80% due to the pandemic and work-from-home with companies now buying into consumer brands like Apple and Acer. And by consumer brands I mean those not offering business conditions such as same day on-site repair. Acer saw a similar growth as Apple (a little less), due to the business market virtually sold out. Anyone who thinks the laptop market will continue to grow by over 80% annually after the pandemic and chip shortage is over, must be flying with those flying pigs. 😂
It will continue for a while, maybe for all of 2022, time will tell. Lenovo, HP and Dell still have back orders they won’t be able to fulfill until mid next year. Curious to see how much stock Apple is piling up for late 2021 and early 2022 shipments. But even with the shortage, they will say way less than either Dell, HP or Lenovo.
Ha ha, makes me laugh even more… trying to make numbers work into your perspective, but just continue, just another conspiracy theory… x86 is in decline and it will continue at an even more rapid pace in 2022

What about under display camera? Has anyone mentioned that?

Pretty sure Apple has been rumored to be possibly using that for the iPhone, but it would probably be easier/less noticeable to pull off on a laptop as it's such a small part of the screen.

I don't understand the math: Montery beta says resolution of 3024x1924 and if you subtract 74 pixels from the height you get 3024x1890. If there is going to be a notch (a displacement of pixels), then shouldn't the REAL dimensions be 3024x1890?

I'd love to see how many people now have an iPhone with a notch after they said they hate the notch and wouldn't upgrade until the notch was gone.
Wrong question, ask how many people hate the notch, have an iPhone and stare at the screen for 8-12 hours a day? Not sure how much I look at my iPhone, maybe 15-20 mins a day? 30 mins tops on busy days.

Ha ha, makes me laugh even more… trying to make numbers work into your perspective, but just continue, just another conspiracy theory… x86 is in decline and it will continue at an even more rapid pace in 2022
Don’t be a butthurt Apple fanboy. Funny that business statistics show something else. But hey, as long as it makes you feel better. ;)

All that aside, I’d actually like to see ARM take off. They’re great chips, but currently lack business and software support. I’ve been working with ARM for many, many years now. Developed distributed systems for sensor and compute applications. The massive growth is in the embedded world, not desktop/laptop. So x86 is quite safe and not going anywhere, especially HPC applications. Even if I’d like to see this. In the end, I’m using what gets the job done and not what I like best or what I’d like to see succeed. I understand some people are making decisions based on their emotions only, but that doesn’t help to get anywhere. Used my first Apple in the 80s and as a primary drivers since the G4 days. Bought pretty much everything Apple released, but I’m not married to the brand.

If this notch nonsense happens then it's all over for Apple.
Apple wants to turn macOS/Macs into extended iOS/iPads. Without Windows support (MS says it’s not happening officially) and Windows supporting the notch, they will lose customers anyway. Back to the PPC days. But guess what, it doesn’t matter. Mac sales are relatively small for them, they make the majority of money with iPhones, iPads, the watch, services and apps. So converting Mac users to extended tablet users is actually a benefit for them. The majority of business users are on Windows anyway and the server market on Linux, even Apple is on Linux servers. That’s not their target market. The iPad market is going to eat away the Mac market in the next 5 to 10 years.

IOW, it's a reason for the bump.

Like, yes, they could make the entire phone thicker instead, but that's not what people by and large want.
So exactly what I said: Physics is NOT the reason for the bump. Physics certainly allows designing a phone with a camera and no bump, it would just be a thicker phone. So the OP was wrong. The reason for the bump is that Apple wants to make a phone thinner than the camera specs will allow, so they compromise by having a bump instead of a thicker phone.

Apple: stop spreading false/sketchy rumors around. Are you doing this so people can talk about the upcoming Mac and the new event or what? Apple’s marketing team is working hard this weekend. Getting that free publicity, advertisement and attention without paying a single penny.

So the notch is present and Face ID isn’t? What’s the point of having a notch???

This is beyond wrong. The issue with the notch is that it is WITHIN the aspect ratio. It dips INTO the screen area which is the main problem in the first place. The aspect ratio includes the notch. You can’t subtract it.
