My preferences in this matter

1080p with bezel and Facetime
720p with bezel and TouchID

1080p without bezel, but with notch and FaceTime or TouchID

A notch on a MacBook is a lot different than a notch on a phone. The notch will be where most people already have empty blank space on their status bar already.

Video won't be an issue either because even when in full screen, HD videos have black borders on the top and the bottom.
All major photo formats are taller than 16:9 hence the black bars will be on the sides, not the top/bottom. In this case the notch will stick out like a sore thumb.

I think the notch on the iPhone was since the beginning misunderstood. It is always seen as less space. But basically, it creates even more space instead of a classical Forehead-Bezel. On a MacBook Pro I am not so sure about it anymore. In my opinion they should keep the Design on a computer like on the iPad Pro and the XDR-Display. But we will see.

Brands manufacturing laptops w/o bezels usually place the webcam at the bottom of the screen resulting in a low angle view. This is horrible. A notch that houses the webcam and placed at the top solves that.

That said, I'd like to see Face ID as well.
Ridiculous. The notch doesn’t solve anything. The camera has always existed at the top of the screen.

So, it looks like my musings in post #902 have been confirmed with the latest article on Macrumors about an Apple patent that was filed in 2019. I can't really be certain whether we'll see the notch on the new MacBook Pros but I think the concept makes sense and I wouldn't be surprised if we see it on Monday or in a later release from Apple.

This may be a case where a design constraint (thin bezel) resulted in an opportunity to make a real advance in usability and the UI (i.e. the notch as an additional area for status and information).

Apple users accept the notch because of the Apple logo on the back.

Apple users even accept the lack of touch ID in the time of a COVID pandemic.

If the iPhone had a Xiaomi sticker on it, the iPhone would not sell that well.

No, you got it wrong:

if there was a Xiaomi sticker on it , it would have android os and not IOS, and that would be the reason why it wouldn’t sell that well.

It is worth noting the original wiebo leak refers to the notch design as from a “suspected test machine”. Hopefully this is one element that didn’t pass Apple’s design validations. The square Apple Watch series 7 leaks were also said to be from test or prototype devices so large change between these and the final design isn’t unheard of.

I can’t believe there are people who don’t mind the notch, even going as far as saying they like it and would take it just for some thinner bezels. You people are the reason why we have this notch mess in the first place for complaining about bezels for years.

Bezels melt away into the background when you are focusing on the display. Not once have I owned any phone or laptop and focused on the bezels and said: “Wow! These bezels are so distracting! I can’t be dealing with this!”

Nobody whined about them in the 90s or 2000s either. A notch is way more distracting and is a design catastrophe. They cut into content on the display when I view full screen photos and videos for example. Defending it does not help things and just gives Apple a reason to keep it around.
God. THIS THIS THIS. I cannot fathom having a notch on a computer…please don’t be true. Steve Jobs would have freaked out at the suggestion of a f*^%ing notch on a laptop.

I'm a human being entitled to an opinion, as are you.
No, I'm a creative professional and therefore I have no concerns on the design of the magic mouse 2. It is quite logical to place the charging port on the bottom so not to spoil the iconic minimalistic design.

Well, just for some fresh news...
The notch message went out faster on the Chinese web (besides, Weibo is in China), and a question about how to comment on the notch had already been on Zhihu (Chinese version of Quora) several days ago. Currently, several (>3) people are already posting anonymous posts stating that they are involved in processing new MBP and can confirm that there is a notch without Face ID. Just pick one post and translated it: (published several days ago)
Why are there so many people don't believing on the notch leak? I have already seen the notch design last year, and kept seeing it for several times this year too. I have been searching on web for notch leaks for several times, and was very surprised that the manufactor had done superb secret-keeping this time.
1. The notch render is ~95% correct, with minor difference like the speaker and HDMI port position, all big aspects are identical to the real product. The new MBP had been manufactering day and night these days to accomodating the anticipated high request, and I have seen the product and can 100% confirm that there will be a notch without Face ID.
2. I see the machine since the beginning of 2021, and was surprised the first time I see because I don't believe that Apple will design such an ugly machine. The advantage I can say is that the performance had gone up dramatically, so those geek maybe love it. However this means that the machine is very heavy, with a much better cooling system (two bigger fans).
3. I expect that the once the machine is published people will soon be divided into two fighting groups, one advocating it for its much better performance, and other disgusting it for the ugly design. And the AAPL stock will probably go down since everyone's not gonna expecting this machine to sell well.
4. I suggest waiting for next year MBA, which will be really thin and light with good performance. I can also confirm that the colored MBA leak is true, and it will also be coming with a notch. I like that instead of MBP 14/16 since the latter is too heavy.
You maybe think I am joking, but I hope you can come back and give me an upvote after the event.
In addition, in the comments, he explained why the machine is heavy:
I don't know the precise parameters, but the new MBP is more heavy because it has two SOCs (CPU+CPU or CPU+dGPU or involving NPU, I don't know), but in the end it will be a very electricity-hunger machine with double the power consumption. The 30%-40% area of the logic board is two huge fan (which create cooling system that can handle 100W), and it uses bigger and heavier battery to sustain usage hours. No one knows the precise weight (there were no scale), but it feel really heavy (and heavier than previous MBP16) based on hands-on sensation.
BTW, another anonymous person also mentioned that the machine seems to be facing production problems as the new manufacturer procedure is not very stable...

Hasn’t this machine been rumoured to be in production since early August? If they are still facing issues it would have to be a major issue like some suggested happened to the new Apple watch.

Early August rumor is saying about M1X chip itself I presume? I did not remember if it has been rumored for the machines to start production in early August though...
Still, the person said that the machine started mass production last month. But since we cannot identify his identity, better take the message with a grain of salt.

It does seem like the articles were referring to the machines going into production but we cannot know for certain if there are issues or not as Apples production facilities are very secretive. Although the amount of new leakers who have came to fruition after the notch rumour revealed itself is rather suspicious.

And it didn’t ship beyond a public beta when they saw how impractical it was. The notch works somewhat on the phone because Apple controls the status bar, though some apps can chose to repurpose that space and have to work around it. On the Mac, the menubar has always been the domain of the application and the user. Historically, Apple has caught a lot of heat for changing and cluttering up the menubar. From the persistent yellow help icon in System 7 to wasteful spacing of icons in Big Sur. It’s is an area where then really need to tread lightly because on macOS the menu bar is the only place where the UI of third-party software and the OS cross paths.

Welcome to the world of the Macintosh turned into a iPhone/iPad. Love my 2019 MacBook Pro with a Intel i9, but is getting pushed back on use with a PC tower with Windows 11 AMD 5900x, Thunderbolt 4, WIFI 6e, 10gb ethernet and 32gb of ram and a Nvidia 3080 TI card. Everything I wanted on a Mac Pro Tower at half the cost of a current Mac Pro tower.
I use my Acer Spin 713 for mobile use with a 11th Gen i5, with gorilla glass, touchscreen and turns into a tablet with a USI pen that only cost $50 not $125, it does everything I need on the go and it only cost $619 with no notch.
