MacBook Pro order delayed

On february they are supposed to announce the SDK for the iPhone/iPod touch, and considering that the press has yet to receive the invitations (sometimes Apple invites press), I think that february 5th is too early. Maybe they are going to do an announcement also for the MBP in that day! :cool:
 
Back to the question of delayed shipping time and what it means...

I just went online to chat with an Apple rep (from the store) and I asked about the delayed shipping time and this is what I was told:

• You are chatting with John T, an Apple Expert
• Hi, my name is John T. Welcome to Apple!
• You: HI
• John T: Hi
• John T: How may I help you today?
• You: I want to order a MBP and want to understand how the shipping times work?
• John T: Free shipping takes 3-5 business days.
• You: If I want to order it with the education discount (am a teacher) does that change anything, shipping-time wise?
• John T: No that won't have any impact on ship times.
• You: I have a friend who ordered an MBP and was told that the shipping was delayed until Feb 26.
• You: Is that a possibility?
• John T: It's not a possibility no... as far as the discount having any effect on shipping.
• John T: Your configuration could have an impact.
• John T: You can see that as you configure your mac.
• You: When I configured the mac I want it said 1-3 days shipping... but the same thing happened for my friend and then he got an email that indicated the delay
• You: if that's going to happen should I just go to the Apple store and shop that way?
• You: would they have the variety of configurations?
• You: and would they give me the teacher discount?
• You: sorry for all the quesitons
• John T: The store has no configuration options at all.
• John T: Place the order... your friend's situation is atypical.

For what it's worth....

Also, I asked about the possible upgrade for an MBP and this is what I was told:

• You: there were rumors for some time about the new MBA but also of an update to the MBP....obviously the MBA was announced at the MWSF 08 but the MBP was not
• You: i've been waiting since late september for an update/upgrade
• John T: There are always rumors... the mac mini has been dead for 2 years running... Actually the chipset was updated in November.
• John T: At least 90% of the rumors are wrong... that's very conservative in fact.


So that's out of the mouth of Apple.... at least what the 'company line' is (or at least as per this Apple-employee)

I hope that MR is closer to the truth....;)

I ordered a high end 2.0 and they sent me the newer model, it was delayed for a week or more.

Steve specifically said Late Feb in the keynote for the SDK so the 26th would make sense for both :)

No. Sometimes they throw people a curve and punt them out on a Thurday ;-)

But mostly Tuesdays...

The 26th would be good timing for the iPhone SDK. Steve does a big media event to intro it - then hits us with "one more thing - New MacBook Pro!" It could happen... But I'm not going to hold my breath here.

I didn't watch the keynote, I just read 3 or 4 liveblogging and, damned them, they didn't write this thing (or maybe, in the fever of a MBP announcement, I skipped that part).

Thanks for the info.... though I do doubt the apple rep would really know any different, or say any differently if he did.

Until the product change happens, the rep wouldn't say the update was coming even if he knew. Same with if the delay was due to the upgrade, since they almost certainly wouldn't be all out of the old model, it'd just be certain configs.

I'm still not convinced the delay means anything, but I think it's certainly hopeful, especially if other people start to experience delays.

I thrive on the hype!!! The downward spiral of disappointments only infuse the hype of the next hype. It keeps me teetering on the edge of insane perseverance. Isn't March usually a big update month anyway for current lines? March, June and October it seems. Am I right about that?

I think this year all the cycles are going out the window, because the impression I got from the MWSF Keynote was that Apple were wanting to do something all through the year. Plus the MBP was going to be updated for MWSF but Apple needed more man power to pull off the MBA.

Might not be MBP holding up ship date

Hey gang.
just duplicated my order to see what ship dates were showing up.
I noticed that one of the items I ordered has a 3 to 4 week estimated ship date. It's the Brethhaven Metrolite Should case in black.
Dang.
I'll find out for sure on Monday, if that's the case (no pun intended).
I'll swap cases and get it sooner. But now I'm wundering if I should leave it and wait, just in case the order slides over to the new systems, which no one can say for sure are coming !
Dang.
I guess I'll have a better idea on Monday.

How do you know that the MBP was going to be updated for MWSF? I don't doubt the MBA man power deal.

You, like me, have been waiting awhile for a MBP update. When did your powerbook 15" die? What are you using now? Are you going to stick with the 15"?

Hi txhil,
My Powerbook died just before christmas (my ex girlfriend dropped it and smashed the screen), but I've been waiting for an updated MBP since August (mainly due to money).

I'm using a Windoze Desktop PC at the moment that I will be replacing with a Mac Pro in June...Can't wait :D

How about you? What are you using at the moment?

Probably will stick with the 15", mainly due to wanting to keep some kind of portability :p

there's your answer! Your MBP will be there on time but the case will be late. case closed:eek: no new MBPs until this summer I'm afraid.

So your ex broke your powerbook?
Is that why you broke up with her? I am using a 15" Titanium Powerbook G4 but I recently lost the hand crank that goes with it so I'm about ready for a new one. I'm doing my best to save up as much cash as I can to avoid any credit card usage. I'm thinking about a 17" because I don't travel too much but I don't like being tied down to a desktop due to my ADD..Oh look a chicken. You wanna go ride bikes...wait where was I ? Oh yeah..Are you waiting until June for strictly money reasons or do you expect something else to happen by June?

I doubt very much Apple will wait until the summer to move to Penryns for the Macbook Pro. That's just utter stupid talk!

No, we'd broken up before then, but we live in the same student accommodation :p

I bet you'll find that hand crank eventually...hang on, no you won't because I nicked it :p

Anyway, the reason I'm waiting until June is because I'm moving house at the end of June, so if I order a couple of days before I move, it'll be delivered to my new house which'll save the danger of it getting damamged (and it's less to move myself).

Must admit, I hate not having a Mac at the moment though...especially with my new pro apps sitting unopened :(

Once you go Mac you never go back unless you are forced. Probably a good idea to wait till after the move especially if your clumsy ex is helping you;)

Here's hoping for a mid-February update... I'll have to order in the neighborhood of the 12th, updates or no.

Anyway, I thought I'd draw y'all's attention to something from another thread - the Student ADC discount is (for me) substantially better than the HE store's discount. Even counting the cost of the membership ($99USD), I'm still saving close to $400. AppleCare is still cheaper (by a little over $100) in the HE store, so I'll buy that from them instead of from ADC. Since you can get access to the ADC store without buying a membership, I'd say it's at least worth checking out.
