You all who use the ODD "a lot" when you are away from home.. What is the trouble bringing an external ODD in your bag? I mean, where do you put all your CDs/DvDs that you have to bring with?

well why would you want to bring it with you when it could be built in..most people use laptops away from home like at college..thats how i will need it. and ill need a cd drive

In college you still have a place to keep an external drive, and unless for some reason you keep all your music on CDs still, you wont need the ODD anymore in college then you did at home. and Software only need be installed once, after that you don't need to keep putting in a cd, so external works great. Trust me, i live with only an external, and I am university right now studying computer science.

I figure Apple isn't gonna get rid of the ODD unless they think it's worth the trade-off...

They made their point with the MBA:
They wanted thin- so they lost the ODD.

Why would they want to lose the ODD in the pro line? What's the trade-off? Would they do it just to make thinner laptops? I doubt it. That's not very "pro". However, if they used the gained space to make the pro line faster... that seems quite "pro".

With the space you gain from removing the ODD in the 13" MBP, it might be possible to add a powerful graphics processor and perhaps similar CPUs as the larger models.

Here's what I'm hoping for:
13": SB i3 or i5 nice discrete GPU No ODD blade flash + HDD
15": SB i5 or i7 nice discrete GPU ODD blade flash + HDD
17": SB i5 or i7 nice discrete GPU ODD blade flash + HDD

Is the ODD important to some folks? Clearly. I feel certain that apple will continue to offer laptops that will have them for the foreseeable future. Good news for you guys! However, there may be quite a market for a 13" that packs some punch... and I say, if apple needs to cut the ODD to make that happen- then so be it!

On a side note:
I doubt it will happen, but with the space you'd gain by removing the ODD from the 15"- perhaps you could add the battery cells and cooling hardware to support a quad core CPU.

Thank you! It's amazing how others - especially on this site - are a little too much out of touch with reality... the reality of the "common folk" that is... in other words, about 99% of the world's population!

lol thank you for writing this..honestly..its built in already and theyre already so thin

Ah ha ha ha ha, aha ha ha ha ha ha...

"common folk" Funny.

You mean, OLD, closed-minded techno illiterates who still haven't got a handle on predictive text with their 8 year old Nokia brick cell phone!

i just got my first ever macbook pro last week..

no regret...

the current design and performance are worth it as well..but i am curious what will the next design be? totally new design or still stick on this beautiful design..
let's behold together..

As someone correctly guessed earlier, the 17" MBPs use 3 SATA ports currently: HDD, ODD, and ExpressCard slot. Perhaps they will get released later than the 13" and 15" revisions?

Go home, you little troll!

The only one who is "closed-minded" here is you. And if you are a so advanced tech guy, why do you use then predictive text on your Nokia phone? Yeah, you said a lot, but i'm sure that you said not what you wanted.

Wow. Some of you folks are rather obsessively attached to your Superdrives. What do you do when they break, which they always do? Mine is broken right now... has been for weeks. Yep, weeks. I can hear some of you breaking out in hives right now.

What???? You have made absolutely nonsense whatsoever.

I've tried MacBooks with ODDs, and have subsequently removed the ODD on my current 13". I'm open to trying new things before having a firm opinion.

I can now say I will never buy a notebook with ODD ever again. That's not to say I won't still use DVDs or CDs, but rather I can see the clear advantages of not always carrying around rarely used bulky equipment.

A bit like not carrying a rain jacket in my bag on every trip into the desert, that space can be better used by other things.

should i return the 13 MBP i got last week and wait for the newchipset? Im happy with the machine but is the i3 really worth it?

IMO yes. My gf was happy with her white MacBook she purchased in late 09 but then the new white unibody had released not a month later. Although she was able to see the new before making her decision she was ultimately happier with the new. It's a bummer knowing u bought something only a few weeks later have it updated. You're happy now but you may not be after seeing a refresh. Might as well take the precautions if you are able to.

PRO line should have no ODD and instead to use it's gain space to

1)LONGER battery
2)Discreet graphic card

that's it.. that's all there is to it.

Golly gee, how about because its already built into the laptop.

If that's the best response you can come up with... Seriously...

In case you didn't read my post (which I can only assume you didn't) I'll summarise it for you.

Internal Superdrive is slow and unreliable. External drive much faster, more reliable, easier to replace if it goes bad.

If your job requires you to burn lots of CDs or DVDs but you can't afford a couple of hundred for a really good external burner (or like 50 bucks for a cheap one) then I suggest you find a job that pays better.

The "reality" is that if you're a professional who relies on having an ODD, you'll be using a far better external solution than Apple's internal Superdrive.

If you're someone who uses their computer to watch movies and listen to music, you should buy a MacBook.

If you're someone who needs the discrete graphics and faster CPU of a pro machine, you'd benefit more from a more powerful quad CPU and GPU supported by extra battery and cooling equipment in place of the ODD. Let alone a secondary HDD so you can store your entire music and movie collection directly on your computer.

computer rental...

I just made a $110 bet on the new MBP being released in the next 3 weeks. My laptop died a couple days go so I paid for a 3-week computer rental under the assumption that sometime soon the new MBP will be here. Don't let me down!

I'm assuming you got a Mac... and if you don't mind me asking where did you get the rental from?

The “reality” that you’re describing is your idea of what a professional should be. The advantage of an ODD is having access to an extremely common media format built-in, available when you need it.

Even if you never use it there are still people who do and it might not be possible to email, transfer to SD, connect or transmit their data to your MBP. And the time you need to get the data from them; whether it’s crucial, to be helpful or entertained – that’s going to be the time you didn’t bring an external drive. It doesn’t need to be top notch, just there, because people don’t always plan these situations.

I have no doubt that the ODD will not be scrapped completely at this point in time, I'm sure there will be at least one offering from the MacBook family that keeps the optical drive.

What I don't understand are the people who think it is fair for everybody else to be stuck with what is effectively one fifth of their computer being useless empty space instead of using an external drive. That space could be used for so many more useful things.

I have no doubt that the fraction of people who use their optical drive more than once a week, or even once every few months, is very small.

Why you so upset, dawg? I've never seen anyone on this forum more pretentious than you. Pretty amazing considering this is Mac Rumors.

I think people are forgetting that a huge part of the 13" MacBook Pro demographic is college students who use it to play DVDs. That will definitely play a role as keeping/dropping the ODD goes and I don't think Apple will drop it just yet.

Kindly point out exactly what part of what I said you would consider to be "pretentious". All I have done so far is challenge people's preconceptions which I do not believe to be true, and offer suggestions for alternatives to an internal superdrive that I believe are more useful.
