Jobs is the King of simplicity

'Not to worry' clearly means the new MBP's are coming, which we already knew, so we still know nothing.

Apologies if this is repetitive, am new to this Forum/thread, but checked the MacBook Pro in-store availability at Best Buy.com for 2 zipcode areas (WA and NYC) and was rather surprised at the results. NYC stores have virtually no in-store stock for any of the MacBooks and MBP's... WA area stores only spotty at best.

e.g., http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemp...375106&productId=1218093607929&itemId=1397620

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olstemp...375151&productId=1218093607601&itemId=1397624

No way of knowing how significant this is, but at least one model ( the MBP 2.8 15") and the MBA 2.13 were listed as "Backordered" and not available for " 1 to 2 weeks"

Anyone have any similar MBP unavailability data that might support the "constraints" story , pointing to the possibility of a release in the next two weeks?

FWIW, i think Apple's optimum retail marketing strategy would be to sim-ship and have the new Macs in the Apple Stores on April 3rd, to maximize the advantage of the massive increase in traffic ( the horde of in-store iPad pickup customers) who would then be able to see/touch/ drool - and buy - the refreshed MacBook Pro products.

Hard to imagine Apple missing that "free" ( no incremental cost) opportunity / marketing and retail "halo effect" from the iPad ... so my bet would be sometime between the 30th (if it HAS to be a Tuesday) to the 3rd of April.

this sound crazy ? Anyone agree?

I agree this means something... All the BB in my area are completly out of stock of all MBP as well. Either BB knows something (doubt it) or they are just guessing when the mbp will be released just like the rest of us. What I think is even more interesting is that BB is selling floor models as well :)

I checked my area (Los Angeles) for the past few days. Most had them in stock but today only 2 stores do which I thought was strange too. Definitely they are clearing the old for the new. Just a matter of days now.

yes, they are coming. regardless, this is an absolute joke. "breakthrough" apple updates past 2 yrs: iphone 3G(S), big ipod touch (iPad), unibody MBP with same old C2D's.

sorry folks, 100% pathetic. where's all that "innovation"

ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous....

it's [exFAT's] not in the specs yet for the sdxc standards

I've looked to try to understand this, and haven't had any luck (pro or con) - apparently, the spec is only available to members of the SD card organization.

I did see that the initial press release for SDXC says that exFAT is in the spec, though.

http://www.sdcard.org/press/SD_Association_Announces_SDXC_Revised_1-7-09.pdf (7 January 2009)
The SDXC specification uses Microsoft’s exFAT file system to support its large capacity and interoperability in a broad range of PCs, consumer electronics and mobile phones. The exFAT system was designed for increased compatibility with flash media, from portability of data to interoperability with multiple platforms and devices on removable media.

I agree completely... but then that's just desperate clinging to any semi-plausible theory in the faint hope that it's actually true.

I used your URLs to check my zip code, in Reno, and found that both the 15 inch and 17 inch MBPs are unavailable at all locations from here to Folsom and Auburn, CA, six different Best Buy stores. Interesting.

What features will have this update?

I would really like that the new macbook pro have...

+ An increase in the screen resolution in all models
+ Change the ugly black keyboard for the white keyboards like the iMacs
+ An slot to insert a sim card to have mobile data
+ The new remote control for front row
+ Thiner and lighter unibody

What do you guys think ???

September last year I picked the cheapest MBP I could, the referb 13" to 'tie me over' until the Arrandale release, (I needed it for work), and am so pleased I did.

It's a great little machine and has served me well, but it has known limitations: glossy on portable esp, stock RAM, slow HDD and 'acceptable' CPU, (yes I know I can easily upgrade some of these things, but don't want to invest extra in temporary machine).

Best of all though, as I bought it referb, I am selling it for 98% of what I paid for it, (and could probably make a profit on it if I tried a little harder). To me that's great - I can have had a 'new' MBP basically for free until the real new model comes out.;)

Refurb MBP Availability

Last week, I checked the MBP refurb availability on the Apple Store site and there were about 5 models available. Now there are 22. Looks like most if not all models. Another pointer to an imminent announcement.

I've long been an opponent of optical media. A spinning disk? Still?! It's essentially an upgraded LP, with all the same drawbacks. It's slow, it's a waste of energy, the media is delicate...

I would merrily sprint towards a world without ridiculous spinning disks... contingent upon one thing:

I install a lot of OSes for friends and family. My single wish is that manufacturers - Apple included - would make it simple to boot from USB flash devices. Seriously, if you want to boot a OS X on a USB flash device, it's Disk Utility or GTFO. You wanna boot Windows or Linux, you spend half an hour reformatting the stick and f*cking around in the BIOS. Seriously. USB should be your first boot device by default - yes ahead of optical - and it shouldn't need a freaking boot sector for crying out loud. What is this? 1980?

Do this, and we can finally say goodbye to spinning disks.

-Clive

Who wants to spend half an hour messing around in the BIOS when optical media "just works"?

Also, when was the last time you tried loading an OS in a VM with a USB stick (ala Fusion or Parallels). Optical media, especially for older OSes, can be hard enough.

I like the black keys. White keys would get dirty too quick

UK supplies

Hi guys,

Again just a possible sign, I have a friend who deals with inventory supplies for UK technology retail chains Currys and Dixons and he said that the 15 inch macbooks are in extremely low supply with most stores not having any. Dont want flamed, just some facts :)

Chris

I just checked all D.C area and Cincinnati area BB's and they are also totally sold out of them. Something definitely is happening, finally.

I don't think ever.... I attach the VM's virtual DVD to a .ISO file of the kit. Even if I have the DVD, I'll use a .ISO of the DVD.

(It helps that I have a rule that all kit CDs and DVDs are ripped to ISOs on the file server where they're on RAID and backed up.)

I have gotten in the habit of reading the box to see if it mentions iTunes. If it doesn't then I become kinda leery. I just assume it is a wmv file that has drm applied to it.

Didn't PE make you download the digital copy via an iTunes redemption code?

No sir, twas the PE extended version Blu Ray, 2-disc set. Digital copy came on ther secondary DVD. In fact, on closer inspection the back cover says "Digital Copy for your PC and PSP". Macs, iPods? What's thems, precious? lol, oh Sony. :)

Lighter, good. Thinner? Couldn't care less. Never was a fan of the black keys, would prefer aluminium. 1680x1050 on 15" and 1440x900 on 13" is plenty doable.

What I want more than anything though is a dedicated GPU and faster processor options on the 13", plus cheaper config options for the HDD/SSD and RAM.

they should be aluminum..

and as a side note.. anyone still thinking wednesday is the new tuesday. or any day of week is the new tuesday?

Lol I'd rather look forward to Tuesdays, that way I wont get disappointed everyday of the week and just once instead :(

Commeeee MBP update already please:apple::apple::apple:

I am thankful you do not work for Apple's design team.

That's a nice setup, but most people don't have that kind of hardware or desire or resources to invest into such a setup. (I would be interested in how you have it set up because I am looking to do the same thing.) Moreover, an optical drive is still needed in order to rip the .ISOs. For me, I prefer not to have to purchase and carry a separate optical drive. I think most consumers would agree and so I do not see the demise of the optical drive across the board for quite awhile.

Well Steve, I 'won't worry' as I go out, without an update, and regretfully buy a Vaio Z tomorrow since the MBA is so terribly outdated. I've waited and waited as patiently as possible, but my dell is crapping out and I need to do something.

On that note, not even Dell have re-released their revised Latitude series with the i7 processor yet.

It's not just Apple.

So go buy a crappy Vaio if you are wetting yourself so much you can't wait 25 days to invest in the revised MacBook which will last you three or more years.
