I hope the MBP comes out by May so that I can have it before RailsConf. I don't want to take my three year MBP 'cross country; it's kinda old for such a long trip.

Oh yea, please Steve, add a Blu-Ray player to the new MBPs. I know you want to sell movies through iTunes but I've been buying Blu-Ray DVDs for the last year and I like taking them when I travel. No offense but I don't want to have to buy or rent a movie when I have the DVD already. It's the least you could do considering I got my brother to buy a Mac, my mom, my mother-in-law, and a nephew. I could ask for a sales commission but I'll settle for a built-in Blu-Ray. :D

Thanks!

There's no chance for Blu-ray, and I'm glad there isn't. All it will do is waste battery life and add weight. If you want to watch blu-ray movies, just go watch it on an HDTV.. the extra movie quality isn't worth it on a 17" with built in speakers

Well Steve, I 'won't worry' as I go out, without an update, and regretfully buy a Vaio Z tomorrow since the MBA is so terribly outdated. I've waited and waited as patiently as possible, but my dell is crapping out and I need to do something.

I am waiting for an MBA update too.

I wonder if this is just like Sir Steve's statement that the new Mac notebooks will take the Macs to the "next level." What does he mean by "next level?" Thinner? Shinier aluminum finish? Without the Flash "junk" software compatibility to ensure stopping of Safari crashes? Glossier black bezel? An oleophobic glass trackpad? Sharper edges on the aluminum to be able to be used as throwing star? Or a sensor that determines whether the Mac is upside down and flips the display for proper viewing (just like the iPhone)? Or does it mean that the Macs will truly run in 64-bit kernel and all (something we're already supposed to have)? Or is it just that they will run OS X 10.6.3 before the updates are available to alternative Macs?

What is meant by the "next level?" I really cannot wait to be blown away, but let's remember that we've heard and read these statements from Sir Steve before and we always seem to be disappointed. The "next level" in the past has meant things like a backlit keyboard, glass trackpad, or even a FireWire port... but sometimes it means adding something that should have been available years ago... dare I say HDMI, Blu Ray, or even eSata? I guess many would be happy if "the next level" means Blu Ray even as a BTO Option.

I sure cannot wait to see the "next level" up close and personal! If we get 20% of the updates we all want, we'll be doing pretty darn good!

Really, those of your threatening to leave.......I am still using a hand me down Aluminum Powerbook G4. I just upgraded the drive to 320G ( for all of my movies and songs) and I replaced the memory and battery as well. I don't know anyone with a "regular laptop", still using their old unit daily, thats because they are crap, you know it, yet you threaten to buy one? Which also amazes me you would come to "mac" site and spend the time to even post that you "can't wait so I will buy something else".Go ahead and plan on getting its replacement in a few months as well.....What will a current MacBookPro not do for you. that you have to wait for the next one? Really, what are you doing on that laptop?

stock constraints on current macbook pro range for no apparent reason

Many have reported stock constraints on the current MBPs since early February but Apple has kept shipping more c2d MBPs. I went to the Apple store last week and they had every stock config still, except for the high-end 15" MBP. If someone wanted to buy a c2d MBP right now, it'd be easy to get one from their nearest Apple store. IMO, there is no true stock constraint on the current MBPs. If anything, there'd be a constraint on building the refreshed MBPs, as Intel has a shortage of the Core iX processors

for God's sake, what are you rambling on about, man? nobody said anything about "next level" except you!

Actually, Steve Jobs was quoted in a stockholders meeting as saying that Apple would be taking the MBP and Mac Pro "to the next level" this year.

Pretty rare for Steve to use this kind of language when talking about the future specific hardware products, so it does invite some speculation.

Apple store will always have stock they have to have stock........im talking about Major apple Retailers in Australia who have been told there is no stock available until Mid April which never happens, its just too long of a period.

I loved when Steve responded to my e-mail to him back in 2003. He's awesome!

I don't want to drag this on to another debate, just one point.
If I own a movie, I don't want to be limited to watching it on my TV, I'd like to watch them on my computer. Disregarding the fact that DVDs have a resolution of 848x480 and Blu ray has 1920x1080, which is very noticeable on that screen when you are close to it, and that a blu ray drive wouldn't weigh more than a DVD drive or consume any more power, what is wrong with options? If you truly loathe BR, why do you care if others have the choice or not?

I was shocked to find that the cages holding the Macs at JBHifi were empty.

I fear Apple will drop the Mac line altogether in favor of mobile devices. Scares the **** out of me.

Right, and how will mobile apps be created then? Out of thin air? (Which is more likely than the dev environment being ported to Windows.)

It's not that the current macbooks are bad and won't fulfill one's needs but it's just that there are cheaper and "better/more competitive" laptops on the market. Now, I understand that if someone is buying a mac they are willing to pay a larger price for name; however, if you buy them today then you are paying full price for very outdated technology. Seriously, even with apple's ridiculous prices, buying one at this point would result in even more of a ridiculous price. It doesn't make sense to buy a laptop when in a few weeks you can get one at around the same price with much better specs.

Not till at least 1-2 weeks after iPad

I would be willing to bet no MBP's until after the release of the iPad. I also distinctly remember an article about what Intel currently offers for core iX for notebooks not being sufficient for next rev MBP's anyway, or am I mistaken?

I agree, if they don't want it then just don't use it. Also, it will not affect battery life. It's ridiculous to mention how he does not want additional technology on his laptop, especially something that is standard on other laptops and notebooks.

I beg to differ. The general public has been adequately exposed to Intel's marketing for the i3/i5/i7 processors, so much so that they have been entrenched in people's minds, consciously or otherwise. The increased proliferation of these processors in PCs have also led to increased awareness. If Apple continues to market their MacBook Pro line alongside others which have these newly-branded processors, they will certainly suffer. Every PC manufacturer with products in the same price range out there has already made the switch to these processors. Even Apple's own iMacs come with i5/i7 processors. It is not hard to see that people will tend to shun the MacBook Pro.

Certainly, there is truth in your argument. Indeed, the average Joes do not delve into technical minutiae when purchasing a computer. However, marketing on TV, billboards, the internet, etc. does such a good job the "Clarkdale" and "Arrandale" differences are blurred to them, leaving behind the consumer-friendly branding of i3, i5 and i7. Consumers generally don't care how good something really is. To them, Core 2 Duos sound like yesterday's technology, and i5 sounds like something better - even if a high-end C2D might perform a lot better than a mid-end i5 processor, consumers will generally go for the i5-powered products.

Do not underestimate the power of marketing. Impulse buys are usually directed by snap judgments which are heavily influenced by marketing spiel.

I agree completely. I have had my macbook close to four years and although I don't need the latest and greatest processor necessarily, I plan on keeping my next machine for around four years. Being able to buy the most current tech will let me stretch my machine for as long as possible.
