No AMD no Upgrade for me MUST be an AMD PROC AND VCARD or wont upgrade.
So you want a slower processor? This article is talking about refreshes for the 15" and 17" MacBook Pros which will get discrete GPUs regardless of Sandy Bridge so Intel IGPs are not a concern here. AMD has nos competitive CPUs on the market or on the horizon to directly compete against Sandy Bridge in this performance class. Llano Fusion isn't released yet and even if it is, it's not based on Bulldozer and the performance will likely be Penryn Core 2 Duo class and isn't likely to beat Arrandale much less Sandy Bridge. I don't think there is a reasonable explanation for going AMD for the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro at least until next gen Fusion parts arrive.

Well poo, my 15 inch MacBook Pro is about to be outdated. Well at least I bought it right when the 2010 models launched. I think the next gen models may be kind of risky. The thought of now optical drive scares me. Anywho, my next Mac purchase will be a Mac Pro...one day.

I'm going to predict:

- MacBook white discontinued
- MacBook Air becomes the standard MacBook

As much as I'd prefer the white being discontinued vs. the 13" MBP, I think if they were going to replace either with the air, it would be the MBP.

The air does not take place of the MB solely cause it's just too expensive (least for the equivalent sized one). The MB is aimed at those mostly who want something a little cheaper, not more features.

from the homepage of macrumors, finally some hope. Not that I , or you is right or wrong, but I've believed for a long time that before April is much more likely. Caution be taken, info like this still may mean up to 6 weeks, but also could mean 2-4.

seems to be encouraging news i checked some online stores here in the UK with 2 being out of stock and best buy saying there closet store with stock was 50 miles away an amazon saying their sold out too so i hope we get a anoucement soon surly apple are not going to leave potential customers hanging too long with out of stock signs

Line-up for Mac Laptop

I think the line-up for laptops will be something like this for at least the next 6 months.

Macbook Air 11" Core 2 Duo
MacBook Air 13" Core 2 Duo
MacBook Pro 15" Sandy Bridge i5 and/or i7, NVidia GPU
MacBook Pro 17" Sandy Bridge i5 and/or i7, NVidia GPU

All models will come with SSD storage as standard.
All models will not have an optical drive.
We'll see a complete redesign for the Pro line with more space for battery.

A MacBook Pro refresh right now would be really great for me. The earlier this refresh happens, the more likely a new model would be out in the late summer / fall timeframe, when I'm looking to buy with Lion OS preinstalled and a free iPod Touch for my wife.

That is, unless this newest upgrade is really compelling. Then I might buy early, but probably not.

Exciting news but I most likely wont be upgrading cause my 2009 MBP is just fine for now. Unless I manage to sell this one for a decent price.

Ahh, I remember when I was debating (back in July 10) whether I should just buy now, or wait.
So glad I didn't wait. :)

A colleague at work was looking at getting a new MBP the past few days and 'magically' the lead time for the 15" and 17" jumped from 24 hours to 1-3 days to even longer on 3rd party sites...

I believe Apple may update very soon.

Oh, we stopped in at our local BB today (which has the Apple 'store' in it) and they were completely out of 15" and 17" MPBs and the lead time for the 17" was weeks...

...I think keeping the optical drive is important for now. Digital distribution may be the future, but with bandwidth caps and throttling in Canada and I'm sure in other places in the world, downloading multi-gigabyte files over the internet is just not convenient. Removing the HDD and adding blade SSDs is sufficient and will still yield some space savings...

ehm, external drive, ehm

MBP announcement

Since iPad 2 will be released in April, Iphone 5 in June...
Do you think its possible they will announce the MBP lineup before the iPad 2?

The new sandy bridge chips, from what I've read, have good power consumption numbers on the low end and built in graphics capabilities comparable with the current MacBook Air models. So they might get a bump later in the Spring to, say, Core i3.

Agree on SSD, but maybe with a slight delay on the Pro models? Unless they have a standard drive where the SuperDrive used to be? Pro users like me will have a hard time dealing with 128/256gb options, and 512GB SSD are currently prohibitively expensive. Though I might have to get along with toting one of those WD Elements 1TB 2.5" drives that are only around $100 right now.

I'd love only 128gb SSD + 1TB internal drive. Perhaps the new blade SSD for the OS only, with a slot still for standard 2.5" drives, and extra battery where the SuperDrive was?

Don't get your panties in a wad, core i3 and i5 Sandy Bridge chips are still under Intel NDA. They need a release before they can show up in macbook pros.

Very excited to see an Apple-specific post as opposed to AT&T and/or Verizon :D

Agreed. Time to start getting ready to eBay my current model.

On another note; as much as I would love to see the removal of the optical drive, and maybe it just ships with an external one, I really don't see that happening yet. CDs (and DVDs) are still widely used. *Maybe* next refresh...but not yet. As for SSD, that makes a lot of sense...we'll see.

Sandy Bridge does not support GPGPU, but it supports Blu Ray and video DRM. It makes no sense for Apple.

Or Apple not supporting Blu Ray will look much worse.

Yes, this was a breath of fresh air. It seems the MacBook Pro's are on a 8 to 10 month refresh cycle, although some refreshes being more significant than others. That's pretty frequent.
