Pointless prediction from me:

Base Poly Macbook in 4 colours: Red, White, Blue and Black

The rest get a speed, memory, SDD, graphics, battery update.

Oh the price will go up in Europe and Australia - just to annoy us.

Apple will never offer the Mbp in colors.

Dear Apple:
I want my new Sandy Bridge 17" MBP on my doorstep by this afternoon.

But if it doesn't have a quad CPU, a decent GPU and a nicely sized blade SSD, I'll use it to pimp hand you around the chops.
Do it, ma bitch.

Thanks Guys,
-Love Erasmus

Maybe it is time to roll the dice again on how I feel about a notebook. It is tiresome to still see Redwood and GF108 cores though. Midrange mobile GPUs have not changed much.

The alpha version of Intel's OpenCL for Sandy Bridge runs on the CPU side.

Where does Compute Shader run?
On the IGP? I haven't heard of any OEM releasing DirectCompute drivers for the CPU. AMD doesn't seem to have done so for their CPUs as they have done for OpenCL. I don't believe that DirectCompute was even designed to target CPUs and instead is GPU focused as opposed to OpenCL which was intended to be more flexible to target not only GPUs, but CPUs, vector processing units like Cell, and DSPs. If Intel is claiming Compute Shader support, I would think it would have to be via a GPGPU capable IGP.

Black perhaps, but red and blue is too PCish for Apple Consumer Electronics me thinks.

Now with even more pentalobe screws!

+1

I'd like to see the 15" MBP with no optical drive, a ssd drive (for the OS) in addition to the regular drive (witch would be used for storage) and more battery in the space left over.

Keep dreamin'.

I doubt Apple will be putting quads into the 13 MBP.

And I don't understand why people say they are going to kill off the 13 MBP. Its the most popular notebook and its targeted differently than the MBA 13.

I really doubt the 13MBA would replaced the 13Pro.

There's nothing about it now that can't be replaced by the White MacBook or the 13" Air, save for the FireWire Port (which they could reintegrate back into the white MacBook with only a slight design tweak, or reserve for the 15" Pro because most of the people buying 13" Mac laptops don't even know what FireWire is), the IR sensor (that no one uses), or the backlit keyboard (which is unimportant). If you killed it, one of the other machines would become the best selling Mac. It's no real loss.

Light Peak, anyone? That's the future.

You're early. Come again soon!

Optical drive on mbp has tp go away.

Buy a MacBook Air if you don't like it.

So you think Apple will completely disregard what customers want?

The white MacBook is relatively cheap and can be easily upgraded to 6 GB RAM and a 750 GB hard drive. It has a 2.4 GHz processor. It has ten hours battery life. It has a screen that is much more suitable for people of 40 or more years.

Dropping the white MacBook means substantially fewer sales.

I see potential customers saying that Apple has gone completely bonkers, that there is no way they are buying a laptop that doesn't have a 500 GB drive, that cannot read any CD or DVD of their huge collection, and they are not paying through the nose for a 500 GB SSD drive. Note that I say potential customers, not customers, since most of them won't turn into customers.

Exactly, that's why the white MacBook isn't the one being eliminated if one of the 13.3" models is to be eliminated.

If they remove the optical drive, it is more likely they will put a 500GB HDD there and put 128 and 256GB SSD's in the already existing HD bay. They may also rework the space the ODD takes up to fit an SSD blade and extra battery in there. The 512GB SSD's are still extremely expensive and unless Apple got a sweetheart deal from an OEM then they will probably go with a hybrid system, as they likely wont go up to 500GB standard and then retract back down to less than 200GB.

They're not killing the ODD in anything that isn't a Mac mini Server or a MacBook Air.

Do you think the MBP would get thinner if they decided to drop the optical drive?

Marginally at best.

someone said we won't see a new MPB until March due to supply fluctuates a month before release. I highly doubt this postulation though. How much money is AAPL losing by not having MPBs in stock? the widespread shortage must cost them tens of million dollars per day if not more!!
I personally think the release is imminent as in less than two weeks.

Can't wait, need a 15" MBP, can't believe I went with the 13" Late-09 it's tiny.

I think there will be a design change, definetly something along the lines of the MacBook Air, where it becomes slender as you move down to the edge of the computer.

Not as much as you think.

Definitely not that much.

Possible, but not necessarily factual.

Seriously? A pony??? Get a freakin unicorn!

I doubt that...the white MacBook is has been the cheapest, entry-level notebook since 2006 (I should know, I used one for 4 years!). There's still a $200 difference between the cheapest MacBook and the cheapest MacBook Pro.

Plus, they just redesigned it last year...

Did you read the second bullet point... immediately above the one you commented on?

I'm going to predict:

- MacBook white discontinued
- MacBook Air becomes the standard MacBook

Currently:
Entry Level MacBook $999
Entry level MacBook Air $999

If you're looking for power and larger screen sizes, you get a MacBookPro. If you're a consumer who uses their computer for light work, surfing the internet, and organizing your photos and music, a MacBookAir comes in under $1000 just like the current MacBook.

I was just going to order mysel fa new white macBook tonight. Now I see this....

Guess I'll have to wait just a little longer. Doesn't this generally mean 2 weeks till a refresh?

Display resolution.

Now that 1440x900 is the screen res of the MBA 13", I hope the default res for MBP 15" will be 1680x1050 and that matte option will be free of charge (if not default).

EDIT:
- oh and one more thing: I hope they won't remove the backlit keyboard like they did with the MBA!

The problem is that how are you going to listen to a CD, watch a DVD or even store movies and your iTunes on a 64GB SSD? Most people can't and there is NO way they will pay the SSD mark up that you are forced to on the air for 128GB.

As far as I see it the MacBook kicks the Air's ass in ever depart ment except weight, and screen resolution. The later may be come a +1 for the MacBook if they give it a 1440x900 like the 13in Air when they refresh.

You're telling me that I'm going to be sold on a 11" MacBook Air over a White MacBook for the same cost? That's ridiculous! Also, the white MacBook remains the most durable (let alone most "inexpensive full featured") Mac laptop out there, and that's big for the education industry. Just because the 11" Air is the same cost, doesn't mean it'll replace the 13" MacBook. That makes no sense at all.

Oh the price will go up in Europe and Australia - just to annoy us.

lately the AUD has been strong (even broke parody for a week or so and is sitting comfortably at about 99.5 US Cents) so I'd expect it to get a little cheaper in Australia as it has done in the last few updates.

my laptop was $4,000+ now the equivalent is over $1,000 cheaper

also, I predict:
Sandy Bridge (Duh)
8GB Ram+
Optical Drive will stay (at least for 15"+)
SSD Option like there is now
possibly a 1050 or 1080 resolution

I think I'm forgetting something

This is better --although this also could be nothing -- than hanging out on the forum on daily basis and look for hope.

Anyone who needs to get stuff done needs mbp. Please let it come out in feb

Pleaseeeee

It is great to hear this news. My current computer is breaking down so I really want the MBPs to be refreshed, hopefully I can get my hands on one before uni starts again in March.

I work in one of NZ's leading Apple resellers and we have been always running out of the 13" models since Christmas. There are a few 15" left though. Also we seem to be short of iMacs as well.

Good luck. Hope you get a good return on it. I move be doing. The same but definitely not until I have a new MBP in my hands.

I usually like to sell the previous model before the new model announcement in order to get a higher return. Logically, after the announcement people will be dumping these on eBay in mass numbers, so I prefer to get in early before the rush begins.

I got Apple to lemon a Late 2006 model MacBook in exchange for a brand new white MacBook. I'm going to sell that MacBook and use the money toward the grand I've saved toward a 13" MacBook Pro and instead save toward a 15" MacBook Pro from whatever refresh is next. Pretty stoked if I do say so myself.
