I think the line-up for laptops will be something like this for at least the next 6 months.

Macbook Air 11" Core 2 Duo
MacBook Air 13" Core 2 Duo
MacBook Pro 15" Sandy Bridge i5 and/or i7, NVidia GPU
MacBook Pro 17" Sandy Bridge i5 and/or i7, NVidia GPU

All models will come with SSD storage as standard.
All models will not have an optical drive.
We'll see a complete redesign for the Pro line with more space for battery.

If they remove the optical drive, it is more likely they will put a 500GB HDD there and put 128 and 256GB SSD's in the already existing HD bay. They may also rework the space the ODD takes up to fit an SSD blade and extra battery in there. The 512GB SSD's are still extremely expensive and unless Apple got a sweetheart deal from an OEM then they will probably go with a hybrid system, as they likely wont go up to 500GB standard and then retract back down to less than 200GB.

I have been nervously eyeing that 2.8GHz i7 15" MacBook Pro with the high resolution display and the SSD for weeks now, really really just wanting to jump and buy one...but I don't know if the wait will be worth it. How much better can they really get?

Looks like my current i7 based 17" is about to be the "old" model. Oh well, at least I got it when they came out. Wonder what the possibility is of a ATT AND Verizon antenna in them? :) Using my Verizon mifi which has a bettery life of 1/3 of my MBP is sometimes a pain.

If its a QUAD in the 17", then by ALOT. :D

I agree. Though I don't think Apple would ever use a standard 2.5" SSD, they would redesign around a blade SSD like the MBA with an additional 2.5" HD.

Okay, but that Quads will only be clocked at 2.2GHz - 2.3GHz, not 2.8GHz or 3.2GHz. Realize that. For most tasks, the i7 640M will be faster than the Quad 2630QM.

But I still want that quad. You are right :)

I'm going to predict:

- MacBook white discontinued
- MacBook Air becomes the standard MacBook

I doubt that...the white MacBook is has been the cheapest, entry-level notebook since 2006 (I should know, I used one for 4 years!). There's still a $200 difference between the cheapest MacBook and the cheapest MacBook Pro.

Plus, they just redesigned it last year...

Here's an example. The alienware r2 that has the last gen i7 940 extreme CPU which btw is a $1000 option alone.... Gets beat in MANY benchmarks by the SLOWEST sandybridge CPU offered. The 2820 is like a $300 option an KILLS the older extreme chip in almost every regard at the same time eats way way way less power.

And you're talking about a measly 2.8 dual core i7 :p

Fingers crossed for a new Macbook Pro with an nVidia Gefore 540M GT and 8GB RAM...

Otherwise it looks like I'm buying Alienware and sticking Ubuntu on it

BTW I'm not trolling, I do high end Geospatial mapping anything less is pretty useless for me.

Oh yessssssss!

Bring it on. Ideal MBP:

15" Display (similar to new MBA)
4GB stock ram
256-1TB flash storage option
Backlit keyboard
Minus the optical drive
Better battery

= WIN

A few months ago I said "I'm going to buy the next macbook pro if it has Sandy Bridge"

Now i've changed my mind and say "I"m going to buy the next macbook air once it has sandy bridge"

Keep changing it up! At this rate I'll never get a new laptop.

TDP is too high. Apple typically does 23-25W cards. That gives you the 525M. The good news is that it's simply a downclocked 540M and has double the pipelines of the previously used 330M.

Cross your fingers that Apple uses 1GB VRAM cards this time around finally.

I wouldn't be surprised if we never see a Sandy Bridge MBA and they go straight to Ivy Bridge next year.

I wish there was more of a definite date. I plan on getting one soon and was contemplating holding out for the refresh. This post makes it seem like it earlier than I was expecting.

Here's my $2 worth.

Although I'm not too excited by the refresh as I think a lot of the exciting stuff, if it ever happens, is at least 12-24 months away (possible IPS or OLED screens, touchsreen, true OS X/iOS integration, etc, etc), and also because I blew my cash on an ultimate Air which I'm loving, but I thought I'd put my thoughts down anyhow.

I suspect the MB refresh will be a game of two halves. Not wanting to dampen sales of the MBA I suspect that the biggest upgrades will come with the 15" and 17" models which will get SSD's, probably Sandy Bridge, etc.

Apple may go with a modest upgrade in the 13" model and add an i3 cpu and a larger hard drive. They'll possibly ... maybe ... who knows ... retain the DVD drive in these lower spec machines to keep that target market happy.

It would make sense for them to keep the white MB for three reasons:

1. It sells well
2. It's a good cheaper introduction to the Mac
3. Slightly more tenuous but without a plain MB what's the point in having it named Pro? Unless they become 15" and 17" Airs but that wouldn't make sense if they are going to put Sandy Bridge in it. It's more of a Pro Air?! Not Apple's naming style.

Whatever happens the must have machines won't be cheap!

We shall see.

We can see supply fluctuate over a month in advance. Based on current Intel product time lines, there's no reason to expect this refresh before the end of Feb.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I've still got a mid-2008 iMac, and while it's been the best computer I ever owned, I think I'm ready to go portable again. One of these updated 15" beauties will be my next Mac. :)

More the VRAM would be a win for me, a 5XXM GT would be far better suited, though I am really guessing we'll be seeing a 420M GT with 512MB. If that's the case I'll be buying an Alienware or XPS system with the 5XXM GT w 2GB 8G RAM and a Quad Core i7 CPU.

That's lower TDP than they usually use. However, they could use those if they end up including quad cores, which have a 10W higher TDP than their previous high-end CPU offerings.

Light at the end of the tunnel

Finally some hope, all this news about the ipad 2 and verizon iphone has taken spotlight off mbp news. Though I am excited for the verizon iphone 5 :D:cool:. Though this may mean nothing, I feel that this definitely is a good sign. If it happens this quickly I don;t know if I'm going to be able to wait for the back to school deals XD.

I doubt they are going to change the outer design of the MacBook Pros. I can see them dropping a few SKUs. There are a lot!
