Pigumon,

I love your sig. Its really cool.

I'm in my third year with my 15" MBP. So I'm most likely looking to buy one later this year. Good news for me, if the MBP will be redesigned!

I'm hoping for a lighter and thinner body, without an optical drive, and improved resolution maybe. So, something in between the MacBook Air and current MBP's, but no skimping on power ;)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

I was hooing they would switch out if intel chips altogether and go ARM... to corner the chip space just as they have the flash memiry space. Go AAPL babe... Makin me RICH and thats all I care about! Have you bought any shares of AAPL yet... If not you're so missing out :p

I am so lucky!! My work laptop is due for a refresh in March and w/ this news I will def be able to refresh to the new MBP15! I have been telling all my coworkers to postpone refreshes too because you don't want an outdated machine :)
So far our company's standard laptops lineup are:
ThinkPad T410 SSD i5
MPB regular HD i5
You see what they did there? They made the decision really difficult to make!!! While I love MPB, the performance on at SSD Windows 7 is also very good! (We work in an Windows environment and all MBP come w/ VMware and Parallel).

I also hope they bring back the black MacBook with this announcement. That beauty never got its chance to shine. It was so sexy!

Very excited to see an Apple-specific post as opposed to AT&T and/or Verizon :D

+1 I'm pretty sick of the iOS news/rumors as well. Just let me know about the next version of it and the next iPod touch running it and that's all I care about.

The current MacBook Pro 13" is pretty out-of-date.

(I know, I know, the Nvidia card, but a discrete graphics card should not be an issue in the 13")

...but it is, it's too thin to support it and the optical drive isn't going to be ditched for it unless it drops the "Pro" moniker and/or becomes something new, and even then, it's unlikely.

I'd love to see a MBP with an SSD+HD no optical drive and a larger battery.

Keep dreamin'.

Yay! I'm going to buy a Mac laptop soon, and I hope the new Pros are cheaper and possibly have flash storage.

Uh...you can customize a 13" MacBook Pro today with flash storage at a price that isn't TOO ugly.

w00t, new stuff! Perhaps we'll see an iChip in the 13" model. While I'm dreaming, I'll take a high-res matte screen for the 13" and a pony.

At least you admit that your wishes for it are unrealistic. :p

I'm going to predict:

- MacBook white discontinued
- MacBook Air becomes the standard MacBook

Whitey has more time; schools still need an inexpensive and durable full featured Mac laptop, the White MacBook is still the only Mac in Apple's arsenal that fits that bill. The 13" MacBook Pro, however, doesn't, and in addition to that, both options for a future CPU/GPU combination for it are unacceptible to the users of that market, a problem that neither the MacBook Air nor the white MacBook have.

I think the line-up for laptops will be something like this for at least the next 6 months.

Macbook Air 11" Core 2 Duo
MacBook Air 13" Core 2 Duo
MacBook Pro 15" Sandy Bridge i5 and/or i7, NVidia GPU
MacBook Pro 17" Sandy Bridge i5 and/or i7, NVidia GPU

All models will come with SSD storage as standard.
All models will not have an optical drive.
We'll see a complete redesign for the Pro line with more space for battery.

Don't bet on it, you might lose money.

ehm, external drive, ehm

ehm, inconvenient, ehm

Light peak anybody? This is the year! Am i right?

Nope!

As much as I'd prefer the white being discontinued vs. the 13" MBP, I think if they were going to replace either with the air, it would be the MBP.

The air does not take place of the MB solely cause it's just too expensive (least for the equivalent sized one). The MB is aimed at those mostly who want something a little cheaper, not more features.

A little cheaper, but also full featured. The 11" Air, for being the same price as the White MacBook is lacking in things like battery life and performance.

Agreed,

I don't think the world, specially Pro-sumers are ready to leave optical drives just yet.

True facts. Though nor are those wanting to install things like Final Cut Studio or StarCraft II; both of which would take a day at best to download and install.

iMac Refresh Coming Too?

It's encouraging to see that there is pretty solid evidence to expect a refresh on the MacBook Pro line; I recall reading in December from several sources that the iMacs were likely to be refreshed alongside the MBPs…I'm looking to buy one soon when I get my tax refund and I'm fairly antsy to pull the trigger, and I'm hoping not to have to wait too long.

Has anybody heard anything along these lines about the iMacs getting a hardware specs bump in the near future?

Thanks Apple. To keep me satisfied, please include at least an i7 quad core and an NVIDIA 460 GTX. That's all I'm asking. Well, an aesthetic design change towards the iOS devices would be nice, but that's optional. The current Macbooks don't look dated by any standards.

This all smacks of early 2008 when we were all debating if Apple would change the body of the MacBook Pro when they added the then-new Santa Rosa (SR).

If history is a guide.... then we have one more generation at least of the current body style.

This brings back memories of the "Waiting for Arrandale" saga. We got all the way up to part i7.

There will never be anything as epic as that thread!
Every tuesday it was the same disappointment, Lol Classic.

Regarding this topic, I have a strange feeling we'll actually see new hardware for the MBP's. Like a new color and/or a new design. I know this might sound crazy but that little change last night with the Apple site, confirms this feeling for me. Am I the only one who feels like that wasn't a coincidence (the Apple site)? Maybe I'm just over thinking it. Either way if Sandy Bridge is present, this will be a great machine.

Okay, but that Quads will only be clocked at 2.2GHz - 2.3GHz, not 2.8GHz or 3.2GHz. Realize that. For most tasks, the i7 640M will be faster than the Quad 2630QM.

But I still want that quad. You are right :)

If you look at the single core and dual core turbo speeds, you'll see that they will actually operate at comparable speeds when running poorly threaded apps. The quads overclock a single core by around 50% of the normal speed, whereas the duals by only around 30%.

Lag Time?

We can see supply fluctuate over a month in advance. Based on current Intel product time lines, there's no reason to expect this refresh before the end of Feb.

Can anyone give a good sense of how long, historically, it has been from the signs of existing inventory abating (as noted in the news story) to new product announcement and then (if not immediately available) to new product availability?

I hope Apple will bring back the normal matte screen for all MacBook Pro sizes. Otherwise, guess I'll be holding out for the Powerbook G5.

Pointless prediction from me:

Base Poly Macbook in 4 colours: Red, White, Blue and Black

The rest get a speed, memory, SDD, graphics, battery update.

Oh the price will go up in Europe and Australia - just to annoy us.
